Darrell Green Hosts 24th Annual Christmas With The Redskins

Posted by Gabe Hiatt on December 10, 2013 – 3:54 pm

Darrell Green stood on a stage at the Hilton McLean Tyson’s Corner and talked about childhood holidays when he was grateful just for a piece of fruit and a pair of ill-fitting shoes.

Shortly thereafter, two doors swung open and busloads of underprivileged children flooded the ballroom.

The Darrell Green Youth Life Foundation ensured kids from low-income and broken homes had a reason to celebrate at the 24th annual Christmas With the Redskins.

The children were treated to a buffet of sliders, chicken tenders, french fries and brownies. Behind a black curtain, tables full of stuffed animals, pink Barbie convertibles and action figures waited for new owners. Appropriately-sized sneakers had been selected for each individual. Read more »

Waiter Ryan Kerrigan Gets A Huge Tip

Posted by Gabe Hiatt on December 3, 2013 – 11:07 am

“Would you like a crabcake?”

The burly waiter extended a silver tray of hors d’oeuvres, but the patrons were more interested in his autograph.

A black, rectangular name tag reading “Ryan” was affixed to a Ruth’s Chris apron over a crisp white dress shirt and a diagonally-striped gray-and-white tie.

Linebacker Ryan Kerrigan and nine of his teammates hustled for tips Tuesday at Ruth’s Chris Steak House in Arlington, Va., as part of a Celebrity Waiter night to raise funds for Kerrigan’s Blitz For The Better Foundation.

By the end of the night, Kerrigan’s group had raised $108,000 for seriously ill, special needs and physically challenged children throughout the greater Washington, D.C., area. Read more »

Will Montgomery On Redskins Late Night

Can an offensive lineman get some love please?

Maybe it’s due to the buckets of sweat staining their jerseys after practice or this thought that if you block you spend your life watching Star Wars, memorizing the Dewey Decimal System and have a  strict bedtime of 9pm, but offensive lineman are almost always the last to get media attention.

Will Montgomery isn’t one of those typical boring guys—he goes to bed at 9:30pm and reads science e-books off an iPad. He also is the man who works closest with quarterback Robert Griffin III.

While a dream for most Redskins fans (to play offensive line of course—jeez Will you’re so lucky) Montgomery went solo this week for “Redskins Late Night”—a show hosted by comedian Chris Paul airing exclusively on NBC-4 Sunday mornings at 1:30am.

Here’s a sneak peak at Montomgery’s time on set:

What Went Right: Week 6

Posted by Gabe Hiatt on October 14, 2013 – 12:44 pm

Highlight: Alfred Morris busts the longest run of his career, a 45-yard touchdown to cut the lead to single digits.

What went right: This is what a well executed zone running play looks like. The offensive line and the runner are moving in perfect concert. This play is successful because each blocker completes his assignment, Morris has the vision to be decisive and then breaks a tackle to complete the big gain. Center Will Montgomery has to trust guard Kory Lichtensteiger to handle the defensive tackle. Watch how quickly he passes the defender off, leaving the double team to get to the next level and  seal off Sean Lee in the middle. Outside linebacker Justin Durant keys on fullback Darrel Young, effectively running himself out of the play. Morris sees the lane, cuts upfield and has the patience to make a another cut off Montgomery. Orlando Scandrick can’t square up on Morris, and the runner shakes him off to complete the play.

VIDEO: Will Montgomery Google+ Hangout

Posted by Stephen Czarda on September 27, 2013 – 10:26 am

Always an afterthought with the media, the offensive line is one of the most important units in terms of success rate. If you have a great offensive line, then chances are you’ll have a great offense too.

The Redskins have both and it all starts with veteran center Will Montgomery.

Montgomery was the latest Redskin to sit down with a collection of lucky Redskins fans as part of the team’s Google+ Hangout Series and talked about this guy he works with real closely.

No not me. That quarterback that won AP Offensive Rookie of the Year—Robert Griffin III.

While being a dream of most Redskins fans (to play offensive line of course—jeez you’re so lucky Will), they asked him other hard-hitting questions.

Here’s what they were:

Fans Now Straw That Stirs Madden Ratings

Posted by Stephen Czarda on August 28, 2013 – 11:09 am

On your drive to work yesterday morning you probably saw what millions of others did and tweeted (at a stop of course) your observations. Taillights, stoplights (tweeting commences), taillights, congested highway ramps, taillights and a long line of diehard Madden fans waiting to get the 25th edition of the virtual gaming experience.

Since its birth in 1988 on what are now seen as archaic video game systems, the EA Madden football franchise has grown rapidly into one of the top grossing sports entities of all time. Just last year, Madden 13 sold over 1.65 million copies—in the first week. Yeah that’s a lot of homework being passed on.

Last week the Redskins Blog released the overall ratings for each player on the roster (yes some have been cut since that time and the next roster update will reflect accordingly) and fans chimed in with disgruntled outrage at how low the Redskins are as a whole. London Fletcher 82? Will Montgomery the only player rated higher than 89 on the offense? Trent Williams’ passing accuracy a whole astonishing eight overall?

Gasps—we have proof to debunk that claim. He’s probably got 14 accuracy.

Under scrutiny for years, the guys at EA are now giving the fans the chance to directly impact the weekly ratings updates. Guess who’s up first. No, no it isn’t Chris Chester although he’s close–about a fanny length away actually. Try Robert Griffin III and the rest of his 2012 NFL Draft classmates.

Brainiac Will Montgomery Knows Science

Posted by Stephen Czarda on August 5, 2013 – 1:14 pm

And he also knows a thing or two about football.

Washington Redskins veteran center Will Montgomery is known mostly for being a football player. Since being drafted in the seventh round of the all too famous 2006 NFL Draft, the former Virginia Tech Hokie has appeared in 74 games, the last 61 in burgundy and gold.

What isn’t associated with Montgomery’s public profile though, is his two degrees from his alma mater. After redshirting the 2001 season, Montgomery had an extra year of eligibility to pursue a masters in health promotion after already receiving a bachelors in business information technology.

Instead of just nailing his diplomas to the Montgomery household walls, the center has applied the curriculum to his position.

Hall, Tapp To Reunite In Washington

Posted by Stephen Czarda on April 4, 2013 – 9:28 am

DeAngelo Hall

With official word that the Washington Redskins have resigned cornerback DeAngelo Hall, his teammates were excited to have him back to help defend the 2012 NFC East title.

Hall has been with the Burgundy and Gold since 2008 when the team signed him to a deal that November. In his five years in Washington, number 23 has appeared in 68 games, starting 64, and was selected to represent the NFC in the 2010 Pro Bowl.

While Hall will see familiar faces from his time in the DMV such as Josh Wilson, Reed Doughty and Robert Griffin III, there is one man who has seen the talented player grow since his high school days in Chesapeake, Virginia.

A season-best nine Washington Redskins players today were named to ESPN.com NFC East blogger Dan Graziano’s final All-NFC East Team. Additionally, Graziano named rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III the NFC East’s Most Valuable Player.

The Redskins’ nine selections tied the Dallas Cowboys for the most 2012 All-NFC East team selections. Following the division leaders were the New York Giants (six selections) and the Philadelphia Eagles (three).

Like it was in the NFL’s Pro Bowl voting, Washington (9-6) was well-represented in all three aspects — offense, defense and special teams — in the 2012 All-NFC East Team. The Redskins had five selections on offense, three on defense and one on special teams.

Here’s the entire list of Redskins representatives on the final All-NFC East Team:

Fan voting for the 2013 NFL Pro Bowl is officially over, and the league’s coaches and players don’t vote until later this week, but four prominent members of the Washington Redskins’ offense have already made the NFC Pro Bowl roster — at least to the folks at ProFootballFocus.com.

The organization today released its own Pro Bowl rosters, and quarterback Robert Griffin III, running back Alfred Morris, left tackle Trent Williams and center Will Montgomery all made the cut.

Here’s what ProFootballFocus.com had to say about each Redskins’ performance so far this season:
