Linebacker and special teams captain Adam Hayward suffered a season-ending right leg injury Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers. But on Wednesday, his number remained on the practice field.

In an act of solidarity, fellow inside linebacker and good friend Will Compton shed his personal No. 51 for Hayward’s No.55 during the Washington Redskins’ first practice since coming back to Loudoun County, Va.

11 games into his first full season, Compton has totaled 20 tackles. He has valued Hayward’s presence on the field and developed a strong relationship—and similar facial hair styles– with him, as evidenced in a couple of Instagram photos together.

Three others who were with the team the entire offseason have been assigned new numbers, meanwhile.

  • Rookie running back Silas Redd switches from No. 24 to No. 32.

  • Inside linebacker Will Compton switches from No. 46 to No. 51.

Adam Carriker, Aldrick Robinson Call Florida State Over Auburn For BCS Title

Posted by Gabe Hiatt on January 7, 2014 – 10:27 am

When No. 2 Auburn went up, 21-3, on  No. 1 Florida State in the first half of the Vizio BCS National Championship Monday night, defensive end Adam Carriker looked like a man who should stick to pro wrestling analysis.

With 00:13 left on the clock in Pasadena, Calif., Carriker looked like Nostradamus.

FSU Heisman Winner Jameis Winston completed a 2-yard touchdown pass to Kelvin Benjamin to cap off the two-minute drill and win the game. Roberto Aguayo’s extra point made the final score 34-31.

Before the game, Carriker predicted a score just one point shy of what transpired.

Will Compton Readies For New Role In NY

Posted by Gabe Hiatt on December 26, 2013 – 10:35 am

Will Compton made Christmas plans with his playbook.

The rookie linebacker was activated from the practice squad on Tuesday to fill in for injured veteran Nick Barnett.

Compton said on Christmas Eve his holiday plans were to catch up on film study and prepare for his one game opportunity in New York.

“So far I’ve just basically replaced Nick,” Compton said. “They’re giving me backup reps behind London (Fletcher) and (Barnett’s) spots on special teams.” Read more »

The Legends Division of the Big 10 is on the line and for six Redskins it’s personal.

While they may have to check score updates on their phones during the team’s flight to the City of Brotherly Love, there will be no love lost for about 3 hours when Nebraska and Michigan State duke it out this afternoon.

With Kirk Cousins and Trenton Robinson proudly defending the honor of Michigan State and Roy Helu Jr., Will Compton, Niles Paul and Adam Carriker pulling out their old Cornhusker hats, expect some friendly banter over alma mater supremacy.

Will Compton Keeps ‘Grinding’ Every Day

If his performance over the first the first two weeks of training camp is any indicator of what’s in store, expect undrafted free agent Will Compton to contend for the single season record for interceptions by a linebacker. Or in the short term make the 53-man roster.

In a little over nine hours, Compton will partake in his first game as a professional football player. With a loaded interior linebacking core that includes London Fletcher, Perry Riley and the newly acquired Nick Barnett, Compton knows that he has to make noise early to garnish a spot on the opening night roster.

“You start from the bottom and you’ve got [to] crawl your way, it’s an uphill battle,” Compton said last week after practice. “You have to keep grinding each and every day.”

One week from today all of Redskins Nation, Washingtonians and Americans alike will join together to kick back, eat some barbecue and enjoy annual Fourth of July fireworks shows that only the United States of America can execute.

Now as anyone that lives in the DMV can attest to, the weather around here is fickle—very fickle.

At current check, the forecast for America’s birthday is calling for mid 80’s and a 40 percent chance for thunderstorms.

For Washington Redskins running back Tristan Davis, he has an interesting take on the chances our Nation’s Capital will have a rainy holiday—and any other summer day around here for that matter.

LB Compton Looking To Make An Impact

Posted by Chris Herting on May 5, 2013 – 11:26 am

Last year it was University of Virginia cornerback Chase Minnifield who, before a season ending injury suffered during minicamps, had everyone talking about his performance at rookie practice. The 6-0, 185 pound undrafted free agent shined right out of the gate in a burgundy and gold uniform and looked to position himself for a chance to compete for playing time.

Fast forward to 2013 and there are a few intriguing college free agent names that will have a chance to earn the right to play on Sundays. One of those names is Bonne Terre, Mo. native and former Nebraska linebacker William Compton.
