It was busy on the Washington, D.C., Convention Center floor this past weekend as thousands of people explored the NBC4 Health and Fitness Expo.

The Redskins hosted a booth where kids could pose for photos and run football drills while learning about the team’s programs.

Redskins executive chef Jon Mathieson and team nutritionist Rob Skinner also hosted a cooking demonstration for fans, preparing a meal players would typically receive in cafeteria at Redskins Park in Loudoun County, Va.

Mathieson cooked up a Cobia entrée with broccoli raab, shitake mushrooms and Farrell grains, offering a variety of vegetables, which he joked are sometimes difficult to feed to hungry football players.

“It was a typical dish we’d do at the park for the players and coaches,” Mathieson said. “You want to use some green vegetables, get a great starch, and a nice piece of fish or meat on the lean side.”

Check out more from the day here and watch the video above to see what the experience was like.

Washington Redskins defensive lineman Chris Baker, along with the Chris Baker 92 Foundation, hosted a book drive event at a nearby pizza restaurant in Ashburn, Va., Monday night.

Baker, whose foundation promotes children’s literacy programs in Washington, D.C. area schools, collected kids books and posed for photos with fans who were encouraged to bring books for students in grades K-5.

Joining Baker was wide receiver Pierre Garcon:

Last month, Baker visited the Wheatley Education Campus and spoke to fourth and fifth graders about the importance of literacy, bringing in a computer program to the campus as well.

This month, the program will be implemented in Windsor, Conn., and The Chris Baker 92 Foundation Reading Challenge will take place in January of next year.

“It’s something they can do here [or] at home,” Baker said in November. “They can take it home to have their parents help them out with their education programs. It’s something to help them reach their scores in reading and writing.”

Australian Chad Ryan Takes In His First Redskins Game

Chad Ryan on Sunday sat in a state of awe.

After traveling more than 18,000 miles from his home in Australia, the diehard Washington Redskins fan took his place in the press box amongst the journalists he had only ever messaged online.

He had finally made it to his first game.

“I can’t think of anyone else in the world who would have had their very first Redskins game, [and] instead of going into the stands, [I’m] coming into [the pressbox],” Ryan told The Redskins Blog. “To be sitting amongst them is amazing.”

A long time sports fan, specifically of Aussie rules football, Ryan had an awakening 10 years ago when his cable company started broadcasting the NFL. At first he could only watch primetime games due to Australia’s time difference.

Eventually, he would wake up at 4 a.m. to catch the Redskins play every week, fascinated with his newly acquired favorite sport.

Ryan, however, didn’t want to support a team that recently won a Super Bowl for fear of being a bandwagon fan.

He had visited Washington, D.C. several times while working for the Australian government and fell in love with the city. He wanted a team with history and an active fan base and after watching former tight end Chris Cooley give one of his signature silly press conferences, the Redskins met all of his requirements.

“He had all those crazy hats and characters in his press conferences,” said Ryan of Cooley. “I couldn’t get enough of it.”

He elevated his passion this year. After interacting with many fans over Twitter and forming an online community, Ryan began his own weekly Redskins podcast where he waxes on the most recent games, highlights the news, and breaks down plays, engaging listeners from the D.C./Virginia/Maryland area. After messaging some of the Redskins beat writers, they connected him with the public relations team, who credentialed him for Sunday’s game.

Ryan had already purchased tickets back in the summer, unwilling to put his winter trip in jeopardy. He plans to marry his fiancé next winter in New York, and used the Redskins game as a brief excuse to stray from their vacation dedicated to scouting out wedding locations.

But traveling in the winter during the holidays meant the standard flight from Sydney-to-Los Angeles-to-New York would be too expensive. He had to make a detour through Hong Kong.

The long-journeyed, long-awaited experience, including getting postgame sound from the locker room, was enough for Ryan to consider moving to D.C. someday, maybe even to cover his adopted team.

“I’d love to get a job here and live here,” said Ryan, who cheered with his wife and her brother in the stands during the third quarter. “That’s the goal. Until that can happen, this is the first time I’ve come across here in winter so hopefully I can make it happen again during football time.”

Redskins Start ‘Em Sit ‘Em Week 10

Some consistency would be nice.

For Redskins fans and fantasy owners alike, riding with the Washington offense requires a seat belt.

In the past three weeks, Robert Griffin III sandwiched a down day in between two electric performances. At 1-7, Minnesota has struggled on defense and is susceptible to strong quarterback play.

With that in mind, the national fantasy experts are predicting a good night for Griffin III and his two top receivers. Because it’s a Thursday night game, there’s not as much internet fodder to pull from.

What Went Right: Redskins Chargers

Posted by Gabe Hiatt on November 4, 2013 – 12:55 pm

Highlight: Darrel Young bangs into the end zone from 4 yards out, ending overtime and delivering a win.

What went right: Power football. The offensive line is fast off the ball, delivering a push at the line of scrimmage. Young takes the quick handoff and sees a crease up the middle. The fullback slips behind Kory Lichtensteiger and follows the lane created by two athletic linemen sealing off the next level. Will Montgomery ties up linebacker Bront Bird. Tackle Tyler Polumbus puts linebacker Andrew Gachkar on skates. Young finishes through contact and falls forward for a touchdown.

Where did Robert Griffin III go?

I’m pretty sure he’s started every game this season. I know he has. It hasn’t all been perfect, but he’s definitely been there, taking snaps, throwing passes, and lately, running quite a bit.

But to hear from the national fantasy football experts, Griffin III didn’t show up until last week, when he torched the bears for 298 passing yards and 84 rushing yards. All fantasy prognosticators agree, Griffin III is back in style like that animal-themed sweatshirt your “nana” gave you that you decided was ironically humorous.

Yeah, you’re a hipster.

VOTE: Who Was MV(Redskin) vs. Chicago?

Posted by Gabe Hiatt on October 21, 2013 – 9:53 am

(AP)

(AP)

Brian Orakpo said he never had an interception. Never. Not in peewee, not in high school, not at the University of Texas. Against the Bears Sunday, he registered his first pick in style, plucking the ball out of the air and returning it 29 yards for the first touchdown of his life.

Was it enough to earn him Most Valuable Redskin for the week?

Roy Helu Jr. made a strong case of his own, rushing 11 times for 41 yards and three touchdowns, including the final score of a 45-41 shootout.

Jordan Reed set a Redskins rookie record for tight ends with a career-high 134 receiving yards. He registered one touchdown on nine grabs.

Cast your vote at the bottom of the Redskins homepage, and tweet your opinion below.
