Tallahassee, Florida is the capital of the Sunshine State, the center of agricultural work in the panhandle, and now can also claim to have produced two Redskins draft picks in the same round.

Hailing from Florida State University, Chris Thompson and Brandon Jenkins were selected within eight picks of each other in the fifth round on Saturday.

While it isn’t a rarity for college teammates to find themselves making the journey together from their college dorm rooms to an NFL locker room (think DeJon Gomes, Roy Helu Jr., and Niles Paul from Nebraska for example), the Burgundy and Gold had never taken FSU teammates together in a single draft let alone in the same round.

As the two prepare to make the almost 900 mile trek from Florida’s capital to the Nation’s Capital, one man who calls both areas home extended a welcoming hand to the newest Washington Redskins:

Orakpo Hand-Delivers His First Nike Jersey

Posted by Brian Tinsman on April 24, 2012 – 4:42 pm

Linebacker Brian Orakpo was the Redskins’ official model for the prototype Nike Elite jerseys, earlier this month.  Now he’s the first person to re-gift his jersey, delivering one to rapper and Redskins’ super-fan Wale at Ben’s Next Door in D.C.

In an ad campaign released earlier this afternoon, Nike’s cameras takes a journey with the pair and capture their conversations.

Wale was born and raised in Washington, D.C., and remains an outspoken fan of his hometown team.  He is frequently seen on the sidelines of home games, has performed at halftime, and has gone on national sports shows in defense of the Burgundy and Gold.

Wale is a popular musician in the Redskins’ locker room, and is a worthy recipient of the first Nike Elite Redskins jersey.  Check out the video below: Read more »

Wale And Larry Johnson Are Watching Out For Each Other

Posted by Matt Terl on August 4, 2010 – 3:22 pm

Last time we checked in with D.C.-born hip-hop star Wale (pronounced wah-LAY), he was performing a couple of his hits at halftime of the Dallas game in a throwback Redskins jacket. That was back in 2009, as things were cratering out for that star-crossed squad, in a contest that I described at the time as “another disappointing game in a continually disappointing season.”

But it’s 2010 now, time to put the past away and look forward into a brave new future of awesomeness. So when Wale showed up at training camp today, I asked him what he had seen that gave him hope. “I actually haven’t had a chance to see too much,” he said. “But we were trying to get on the field ourselves. You know, I live vicariously through a couple of these people, man.”

I did know this. I did a fairly wide-ranging interview with Wale about his Redskins fandom last year, but running back Larry Johnson wasn’t on the team then, so I was surprised to hear that was one of Wale’s pals on the team.

“I was actually friends with him before he became a Redskin,” Wale told me. “I’m excited to get him in town, and I’m here to keep him out of trouble.” Read more »

Thursday, December 31: Wale's Halftime Performance

Posted by Matt Terl on December 31, 2009 – 10:27 am

There are a few versions of Wale’s halftime performance from Sunday night’s game already online; here’s another. This one has the advantage of soundboard audio, so you can actually (mostly) hear the vocals and understand the lyrics. The beats and instruments, not quite so much, but still.

Fast Facts About Hip-Hop Star Wale And The Redskins

Posted by Matt Terl on December 2, 2009 – 4:06 pm

In the press boxes at certain away games, I’ve noticed, the teams manage to include some kind of local food. Sometimes this is major — crabcakes at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore; cornbread and collards at Bank of America stadium in Charlotte — and sometimes it’s just something small, like Tastykakes in Philadelphia.

I half-jokingly asked on Twitter the other day what the Redskins could offer at FedExField that would be comparable, because those little touches really make the press box experience interesting. I like the sense of locality, of pride in a place, that they indicate.

Well, despite some interesting Twitter responses, the team is not currently making any changes to the press box food, but they have found another way to localize the game experience, at least for one game: at the home game against the Cowboys on Sunday, December 27, Wale will be performing at halftime.

Wale may not be a household name for everyone just yet — here’s Rick Snider of the D.C. Examiner giving the ultimate old-guy response to the news — but he’s getting there. For those of you who are unfamiliar: Wale (pronounced wah-LAY) is a D.C.-born rap artist; he grew up in the DC Metro area, and he’s made his hometown part of his music and image as he’s risen to prominence in the world of hip-hop

And prominence is the right word. Just this year, Wale was the house band for MTV’s VMAs; he released his first major-label album, Attention Deficit; and he opened for Jay-Z on tour.

Also, because of his D.C. upbringing, Wale is a die-hard Redskins fan; you might remember me mentioning his name last week as both a participant in the WKYS Sean Taylor tribute, and (in the same post) his video tribute to Taylor a year later.

So having him play at halftime may not be opening an auxiliary branch of Ben’s Chili Bowl in the press box, but it ain’t peanuts either.

I had a chance to talk to Wale yesterday while he was at Redskins Park. Here are some fast facts about Wale growing up a Redskins fan and how he thinks he could contribute ON the field.
