The Owner Apologizes: The (Lower-Quality) Video [UPDATED]

Posted by Matt Terl on November 3, 2009 – 4:05 pm

Here’s the shaky Flip video I was able to get of the truncated media session Redskins owner Daniel M. Snyder conducted today at Surrattsville High School in Clinton, Md. As I noted in the previous post, the session was cut short after just a few questions by the Surrattsville Hornets marching band — it’s homecoming week, after all! — and the Flip camera audio is just abused by the wind.

UPDATE: I’m leaving this post up because I don’t want to delete people’s comments, but there is now a higher-quality video (courtesy of the Redskins Broadcast Network) with the transcript here. Read more »

Chris Cooley Kicks Field Goals At Practice

Posted by Matt Terl on October 23, 2009 – 5:04 pm

Head coach Jim Zorn was full of praise for kicker Shaun Suisham during his post-practice press briefing today. Asked if the holder last year was hurting Suisham’s percentages, Zorn said, “A kicker has to go out and kick, whoever is holding. If I held and the ball was flat on the tee – he has still got to hit it, right? But there is a rhythm. He has worked very hard and he has concentrated on the rhythm of the kick. I think his holder has given him more and more confidence, but he has done it. He has developed the rhythm, the steadiness, he is more patient, and he is not so much attacking the ball early. He saw a lot of different types of rhythms last year. He is much smoother and I think that is what happens to a kicker. He has found his rhythm.”

Also finding his rhythm kicking today? Chris Cooley. The start of practice was delayed by the shooting of the team photo, which also required an extra uniform change. “I had extra time because I brought out my extra gear for practice before the photo,” Cooley explained, “so when everyone else had to change, you could just consider this my early warm-up.”

Cooley did well, especially in the early efforts you see in the video. (Later, he had a miss that came off the tee low and fast and nearly clocked Ethan Albright in the head.) “I hit from 40 yards with some coaching from Shaun,” he told me, “but I used to be solid from 50. When Koz [former Redskins TE Brian Kozlowski] was here, we would play the kicking games a lot. We were out punting and kicking field goals all the time so I actually got pretty good. But I haven’t kicked at all lately.” Read more »

Redskins Sign Compliance Linebacker

Posted by Matt Terl on September 24, 2009 – 12:08 pm

The Redskins made a bottom-of-the-practice-squad move today, releasing LB (and all-around nice guy) Darrel Young and adding LB Alvin “Ace” Bowen to the squad. Literally, a turnover of roughly the 61st roster spot, and something that probably wouldn’t warrant an entire blog post to itself … except that Bowen isn’t just a linebacker. He’s a compliance linebacker.

Welcome Home Luncheon – Players Of The Year Videos

Posted by Matt Terl on August 28, 2009 – 2:57 pm

To get you fired up for tonight’s game: here are the three clip packages that were made for yesterday’s Welcome Home Luncheon to honor the three 2009 Redskins Players of the Year: Clinton Portis for offense, London Fletcher for defense, and James Thrash for special teams.

Thanks to Megan Imbert of the Redskins Broadcast Network for editing, voiceovering, and providing the videos. On an unrelated note, if you’re coming to the game tonight, bring some kind of rain gear; it’s threatening to be pretty wet.

Thursday, August 6: Twitter Forecast

Posted by Matt Terl on August 6, 2009 – 8:03 am

The TV weatherman this morning was standing in front of an hour-by-hour chart of the day, and every hour was covered with angry, terrifying rainclouds. Given the usual accuracy rate of TV weathermen, there’s a reasonable chance that today will be beautiful. But if it’s not, and if this is one of those rare times when the weatherman actually predicts the weather, my Twitter updates from practice will be limited. (In a related topics, if anyone can recommend a reliable waterproof case for the iPhone, let me know.)

If my Twittering is curtailed, I’ll still be back with a post-practice update. But until then, here are some of Intern Jake’s training camp videos from Redskins Rule to give you your morning practice fix.

One of my favorites, the linemen 1-on-1 drill:

Another Facet Of My Job

Posted by Matt Terl on March 26, 2009 – 3:04 pm

There are a lot of facets to my job that I didn’t expect when I signed on. For the most part, it’s nothing too surprising, and often it’s a lot of fun — the regular appearances on Redskins Nation come to mind.

And then there’s keeping the rain off of Chris Cooley.

As you’ve probably gathered, Cooley is a heck of a nice guy, and mostly not at all like you might expect an NFL Pro Bowl player to be. But he’s developed a real aversion to the rain, and now that workouts have started … well, he can bring an umbrella to work, but he can’t very well hold it while he’s working out.

Some Redskins Comment on The Acquisitions; Then There's Rocky McIntosh

Posted by Matt Terl on February 27, 2009 – 12:23 pm

Even though the activity level in the building is much higher than it has been, and even though the media presence has increased enormously (from “zero” to “a whole lot”), there still aren’t that many players here. Still, it seemed worthwhile to see if any of them had anything interesting to say about last night’s two big signings.

Mostly, no.

Kedric Golston was excited about Albert Haynesworth, his new defensive linemate:

(That’s Intern Bridgette asking the question, by the way — I haven’t undergone a startling and unexpected voice change.)

Chris Samuels was also enthusiastic about Haynesworth, but you couldn’t hear him on the video with Golston shouting in the background. Read more »
