Shoeless Roy Helu Attends Film Study

Posted by Brian Tinsman on April 30, 2012 – 5:10 pm

According to Major League Baseball lore, White Sox outfielder Joseph Jefferson Jackson earned his nickname of “Shoeless” Joe Jackson for batting barefooted during a bout of blisters on his feet.

He was one of the greatest players of the early 20th century, but unfortunately his socks weren’t the dirtiest thing about him.

The connection to the Redskins comes through Roy Helu Jr.’s similar discomfort with wearing shoes.  When he walks in to the facilities in the morning, he usually sports socks and sandals.  After practice, he cuts the tape off, removes his cleats, and goes shoeless around Redskins Park for the rest of the day.

A recent newcomer to Twitter (@RoyHeluJr29), Helu tweeted a typical picture of himself in film study this afternoon: shoes off, feet up, and an ice cold…Gatorade in hand: Read more »

Anthony Armstrong finally had his breakout game of the preseason last night, coming alive with two catches for 51 yards, and throwing his hat in the ring for returner (one return, 31 yards).

Prior to last night, he had only four receptions for 41 yards.  He responded after the game with a tweet, expressing his excitement:

Another Pair Of Larry Johnson's Shoes

Posted by Matt Terl on August 10, 2010 – 1:57 pm

Last time I wrote about Larry Johnson‘s shoes, the customization on the back read “Truck Stick,” a combined reference to Madden football and Johnson’s bruising running style. Today, it was pointed out to me that his shoes read “Big Payback,” so I figured that a follow-up was in order.

Turns out it may be the second in a series. “I got a couple of ’em that people haven’t really seen yet,” Johnson told me after practice. (A good practice for him, too. The team was working on installing some goal line stuff, and Johnson was clearly in that mix.)

So, why “Big Payback”? Read more »

Keith Eloi On Footwear, YouTube, Trying To Make The Team

Posted by Matt Terl on June 12, 2009 – 12:33 pm

Two reasons that I hadn’t planned on writing about Keith Eloi‘s now-even-more-famous YouTube truck jump:

1) I had already written about it, however briefly, a month ago, and

2) I didn’t think I had much more to add to what’s already out there, especially considering that Eloi has been discussed on at least three different ESPN shows in the last 48 hours or so. Guy has looked good in practice, jumped into a truck wearing flip-flops, friend amusingly shouts “JUMP OUT THE POOL ON THAT!” What else is there to say?

But yesterday after practice, when he was being interviewed by someone, Eloi talked about how his selection of footwear. Essentially, he wanted to make the jump even more challenging, so he did it, he said, in sandals.

Now, to me, sandals are the sort of strappy, usually leather things with buckles that ill-advised 1950s suburban dads would wear with black dress socks and shorts in cartoons. The things Eloi is wearing in the video … I would consider those a sub-set of flip-flops. Maybe “athletic” flip-flops or something like that.

I wouldn’t have guessed that the taxonomy of open-toed men’s shoes was a subject that would capture my attention, but somehow I found myself asking Eloi about the distinction after the interview was done.

“I think flip-flops are the thong ones,” he said. “If it goes through the toe, to me, it’s a flip-flop. But these are Jordan sandals where they’re strapped around the … the top of the foot, you know? These are Jordan sandals.”
