The Whole Calling-Plays-From-The-Booth Thing Was Not A Debacle

Posted by Matt Terl on October 27, 2009 – 11:04 am

Yes, we’ve reached the point of the season where “was not a debacle” is high praise.

Anyhow, I’ve heard from a few people that the Redskins play-calling chain — Sherm Lewis in the booth radioing to Sherm Smith on the sidelines radioing to Jason Campbell on the field — was the subject of some skepticism during last night’s TV broadcast.

And why not? It was the subject of some skepticism here as well.

Here’s what Sherm Smith said about the procedure on Thursday:

Sherm Smith Discusses The Chain Of Playcalling

Posted by Matt Terl on October 22, 2009 – 4:24 pm

After all the noise and commotion and drama of this week is over — all the arguments and radio shows and old players coming out of the woodwork — the Redskins are actually going to have to play a football game in which someone new will be calling the plays.

The chain of playcalling sounds simple enough on paper: consultant Sherm Lewis will be up in the coaches’ booth. From there, he will radio the calls down to offensive coordinator Sherm Smith, who will then relay them in to quarterback Jason Campbell. Head coach Jim Zorn will also be able offer input via headset.

Sherman Lewis Is Here To Help However He Can

Posted by Matt Terl on October 7, 2009 – 4:16 pm

Well, new offensive consultant Sherman Lewis was out at practice this afternoon, seemingly working with the wide receivers and generally trying to find his place in an established coaching staff. It’s not an easy thing to do under the best of circumstances, and Lewis freely admitted today that he was aware of the awkwardness that could be caused by his hiring.

“I talked to [head coach Jim Zorn] about it last night,” Lewis explained, “and to let him know that I’m just here to help. That’s all I’m here for. And see what I can do; like I said, I wasn’t planning on coaching, so I’m not looking for anybody’s job. I thought it’d be a nice challenge, I thought it might be a good change for me, and I thought I might be able to help.”

What Lewis is counting on to help dispel the impression that his presence is — as some have suggested — the “kiss of death” for Jim Zorn is … well, himself. “I’ve been in football enough to know about that,” Lewis said, “but I think if I handle it right and the organization will handle it right — it’s a very proud organization, a proud tradition here — and everybody handles it right, it should go smooth.” Read more »
