There’s no mystery that the Redskins are the only team without a first round pick in the draft and the likelihood of trading into the first round is slim to none. But hey, the team quote, unquote ‘mortgaged’ the future for last year’s second overall pick.
How’d that end up working out?
Credit the coaching staff and front office for being proactive and making a deal the Rams couldn’t refuse in order to move up and take QB Robert Griffin III. Franchise quarterbacks with Griffin III’s raw talent and ability come around once in a blue moon and the team did what they needed to do to snatch the Heisman trophy winning quarterback.
There’s absolutely no reason to be discouraged that the team’s first selection will come on day two of the draft. And hey, impact players can be found in the second round, especially in a deep draft like this one.
Here’s a list of a few of the players selected in the second round of the 2012 NFL Draft who started and produced immediately for their respective teams.

What do Panthers quarterback Cam Newton and Robert Griffin III have in common?
Since the Associated Press began awarding NFL Rookie of the Year following the 1967 season, they are the only two quarterbacks to have won the Heisman one year and NFL Rookie of the Year the next.
Both quarterbacks experienced success right out of the gate, defying many critics who questioned whether their duel-threat skillsets would translate to the faster NFL game.
However, in the team’s Week 13 Monday Night Football Matchup vs. the Giants, Griffin III broke Cam Newton’s NFL record for rushing yards by a rookie quarterback (706 in 2011). He finished the season with 815 yards rushing.
The rookie was voted NFL Rookie of the Week seven times, compared to Cam Newton’s three. In fact, the only quarterback to claim more rookie of the year awards since its’ inception (2002) was Pittsburgh Steeler’s quarterback Ben Roethlisberger who won nine (2004).
Overall, Newton threw for 4,051 yards and 21 touchdowns, and an 84.5 quarterback rating through the air, along with 706 yards and 14 touchdowns on the ground in his rookie season; pretty impressive to say the least.
Griffin amassed 20 touchdowns, 3,200 yards, and a 102.4 quarterback rating to accompany 815 rushing yards and seven touchdowns. He joined QB Randall Cunningham (1990) as the only players in NFL history to surpass the 3,000-yard mark passing and rush for 800-plus yards.

This year, Redskins rookies represented comparatively well around the league. Heading into Week 17, QB Robert Griffin III, RB Alfred Morris, and QB Kirk Cousins had accounted for 10-of-16 Rookie of the Week Awards.
However, that was before Morris ran over Dallas to the tune of 200 yards and three touchdowns in the season finale, earning the team’s 11th Rookie of the Week Award. After a quick recalculation, the Redskins batted .688 (11-for-17) in Rookie of the Week awards this season.
In fact, following Week 10 it was simply a question of which Redskins rookie will win this week?
Nonetheless, here are the five NFL Rookie of the Year finalists and the number of times they won Rookie of the Week this season: QB Robert Griffin III (7), QB Andrew Luck (3), RB Alfred Morris (3), QB Russell Wilson (1) and RB Doug Martin (1).
Now, let’s skip the pleasantries and before we go crowning Griffin III or Morris as Rookie of the Year get down to the nitty-gritty and explain why a Redskins player should win this year’s award.

We’re a quarter of the way through the 2012 regular season, and here’s your obvious fact of the day:
The Redskins have two of the top offensive rookies in the National Football League.
Quarterback Robert Griffin III and running back Alfred Morris haven’t been playing like rookies through their first four professional games, and those around the league are starting to notice.
Two out of the three analysts on the NFL Network’s “NFL Total Access” gave Griffin III or Morris the nod as their early rookies of the year. Here’s their rationale:
