Vote Joe Jacoby A Modern-Era Finalist

Posted by Gabe Hiatt on January 8, 2014 – 12:42 pm

On the night before Super Bowl XLVIII, 46 journalists will debate the inclusion of 13-year Redskins tackle Joe Jacoby into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

NFL.com is giving you a chance to sway their vote.

I can’t promise the Selection Committee will consider  how the fans vote, but every little bit helps. You have to pick out 15 finalists for your vote to count.

VOTE FOR JOE JACOBY AS ONE OF 15 MODERN-ERA FINALISTS.

Q&A With Pro Football HOF Semifinalist Joe Jacoby

Posted by Gabe Hiatt on November 25, 2013 – 7:00 am

When the Pro Football Hall of Fame announced the 25 semifinalists for induction into the class of 2014 last week, three-time Super Bowl champion Joe Jacoby saw his name on the list for the fourth time since 2004. Jacoby was a four-time Pro Bowler, a two-time AP All-Pro and a member of the 1980s all-decade team. He lived a colorful life off the field as well.

Last week, I caught up with the Hog over the phone to get his thoughts on his chances, ask what it was like to line up next to and across from Hall-of-Famers and grab his thoughts on how to block San Francisco’s All-Pro defensive lineman. The following interview has been edited and condensed.

What was your reaction to being named a semifinalist again? Read more »

Jacoby Still Awaiting His Enshrinement

With the recent announcement of the 2013 Pro Football Hall of Fame finalists, Redskins fans could only shake their heads at the obvious omission of former “Hog,” left tackle Joe Jacoby.

Despite leading his offensive line to four Super Bowls (winning three), with four Pro Bowl nods and two All-Pro selections, Jacoby has been snubbed since his retirement in 1993. He was one-of-27 semifinalists announce in November, but must now wait until next year for this just deserts.

According to Pro-Football-Reference.com, Jacoby’s career performance is comparable to the likes of Willie Anderson, Jeff Saturday, Flozell Adams and Stan Jones; several of which have been or are expected to be inducted into Canton.

The only difference between these players and Jacoby, are his three Super Bowl rings with three different starting quarterbacks.

Redskins Historian Mike Richman helps put his career in perspective, as the man on the outside looking in at his rightful place in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Read more »

Forbath’s Record Football Lands At HOF

Kai Forbath is officially the second member of the 2012 Washington Redskins to make the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

On Dec. 5, representatives from the Pro Football Hall of Fame accepted quarterback Robert Griffin III’s jersey and cleats from Washington’s Week 13 victory over the New York Giants after he broke the NFL single-season record for rushing yards by a rookie quarterback.

This time, the Pro Football Hall of Fame came calling for the ball Forbath used last Sunday (see above) to break kicker Garrett Hartley’s record for consecutive field goals made to begin a career. Forbath made two field goals in the 27-20 victory over the Eagles to set the record at 17 straight conversions.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame documented the occasion both on its website and through its Twitter account:

RG3’s Jersey, Cleats Sent To Hall Of Fame

Griffin III HOF

Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III is headed for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

No, really.

The rookie today gave his game-worn jersey and cleats from Monday night’s game against the New York Giants to a representative from the Hall of Fame, just two days after he broke Cam Newton’s single-season rookie record for rushing yards by a quarterback.

Jason Aikens from the Pro Football Hall of Fame said Griffin III’s jersey and cleats will be on display at the “Pro Football Today Gallery.”

“His jersey will join other Hall of Famers from Redskins past such as Sammy Baugh and Sonny Jurgensen,” Aikens said. “So he’s in really rare company.”

Griffin III said it was “awesome” to know that a part of him will be on display in Canton.

It was one of those surreal moments that saw the Washington Redskins’ historic past meet its exciting future.

Rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III — on a tour Wednesday at the Pro Football Hall of Fame with the rest of the Redskins’ rookies as part of the Rookie Symposium — was face-to-face with the figure of Sammy Baugh, the Redskins’ quarterback drafted in 1937 that led the team to two NFL championships.

They dream of returning one day to receive their Hall of Fame gold jackets and busts.

But for now, the Washington Redskins rookies will mark today’s trip to the Pro Football Hall of Fame as the starting point of what they hope will be many trips to the Canton, Ohio, landmark.
