A Redskins House, Redskins Tooth, And Other Things You Can Vote For
Posted by on May 31, 2011 – 2:55 pmThe Redskins Fan Draft Photo Contest — last seen on this blog as an excuse to post pictures of pets in Redskins gear — has entered the public voting stage. Twenty finalists have been selected, and now you all can go vote for your favorites. And boy, is there some remarkably fanatical stuff for you to choose from.
Like this submission from Rosey King, an entire house painted in Redskins colors:
Or those old friends of this blog, via Tim Thompson, Uncle Skins and Bet-skins Ross:
Or the Knestricks, a couple who incorporated Redskins attire into their wedding:

Or, perhaps most unsually, this Redskins permanent dental crown:

And Now, Pets In Redskins Gear
Posted by on May 27, 2011 – 12:15 pmThe Redskins Fan Draft photo contest (which I previously discussed here) will be announcing its finalists at 2:00 today. As I write this, I don’t know who will be in the finals, but I do know that there were a whole lot of excellent photos submitted. Here are a few of those, specifically the subset that I’ve entitled “Pets In And Around Redskins Stuff”. Clicking on the picture will take you to that entry’s page at the Fan Draft for more details.

Leonard Hankerson Gets Some More Redskins Gear
Posted by on May 23, 2011 – 8:56 amAlmost from the moment he was drafted in the third round, wide receiver Leonard Hankerson has been tweeting pictures of himself in Redskins gear. It was a cool story, interesting enough that I talked to the longtime friend who provided Hankerson with the burgundy and gold accoutrements, but apparently a few twitpics of himself wearing borrowed clothes wasn’t enough for Hankerson: late Sunday, the former Miami wide receiver tweeted a picture of himself in a pretty authentic-looking Redskins uniform.
Before I re-post Hankerson’s picture, let me make it very clear that no uniform numbers have yet been issued; as far as I know, Mike Furrey is still on the roster and is still the person who would officially be wearing 85. [UPDATE: Furrey is apparently no longer on the roster; according to his website, he's the head coach at Kentucky Christian University. Still, no numbers have been issued to draft picks that I know of, so that point remains accurate.] THIS IS NOT OFFICIAL IN ANY WAY. That said, it still looks pretty freakin’ cool.
Based on the background signage, it looks like this shot comes from a photo shoot for a Topps football card — presumably something to do with the one from the company’s high-end “Inception” line that Hankerson tweeted on Wednesday. Here, look: Read more »

Here’s Art Monk Fishing
Posted by on May 19, 2011 – 11:29 amThere’s been an awful lot of drama around the Redskins lately, especially considering that there’s no actual football activity taking place. Sometimes, all that stuff becomes too much and you just want to get away to someplace quiet and contemplative — be alone with yourself and your thoughts and some water while you try to trick marine life into eating a hook.
Well, we can’t actually all do that — a fishing field trip is way outside the remit of this blog — but through the magic of AP photography, we CAN join Art Monk on a 1992 fishing excursion. If you’ve got headphones on, you can make it a truly immersive experience by clicking here for the relaxing sounds of water.

After the jump, more relaxing photos and a quick anecdote. Read more »

Win Lunch With Bruce Allen By Submitting A Fan Photo
Posted by on May 6, 2011 – 11:26 am
If you’re a passionate Redskins fan and can prove it photographically, you could win lunch with general manager Bruce Allen at Redskins Park, along with a host of other terrific prizes. Here’s the deal:
Go to http://Redsk.in/FanDraft to enter. Submit a fan photo demonstrating your passion and support for the Redskins, explain why you’re the biggest Redskins fan, and you could win a chance to be selected for the grand prize. Which is pretty grand, as these things go — big enough that it gets explained in its own bullet-pointed list:
- Lunch with Bruce Allen at Redskins Park, including private facility tour
- 2 tickets to Redskins vs. Giants on September 11, 2011, at FedExField including parking and pregame field passes
- an autographed Redskins helmet
- 2 VIP passes to training camp
- $100 Redskins gift card
- Free Redskins yearbook
All of that stuff is terrific, but it’s the lunch with Allen that puts the prize over the top. Not only is he the general manager of the Redskins — and, if my inbox is anything to go by, plenty of you would just want to get his ear because of that — but he’s also a remarkable repository of Redskins history. He remembers and can share enough first-hand stories about a remarkable variety of events, players, and coaches to make for twenty memorable lunches, let alone one.
To get your creative juices flowing, here are some photos of passionate Redskins fans through the years, culled from the Associated Press archives. I recalled some of these; others (the Redskins Uncle Sam, the terrifying Hogs) were new to me. All of them are worth looking at, and — with the exception of the last image — all would be appropriate for you to submit to the contest … if they were of you, of course. You can’t just submit other people’s pictures, especially not the AP’s. Read more »

It's George Allen's Birthday
Posted by on April 29, 2011 – 5:49 pmIt’s somewhat ironic that the late George Allen’s birthday falls on draft day, given how loath Allen was to utilize the NFL Draft for player selection when he was head coach of the Redskins.
Nevertheless, I coincidentally stumbled across a couple of old pictures of Allen in a drawer this afternoon, and it seems appropriate to post them here in honor of what would’ve been the 93rd birthday of one of the 70 Greatest Redskins, especially while his son sits in the Redskins draft room and helps to direct the course of the franchise’s future.

Images From Redskins Super Bowls Past
Posted by on February 4, 2011 – 5:22 pmThe Redskins aren’t in the Super Bowl this week, obviously. But Super Bowl weekend still seems like a good time to look back at some pictures from the times when they were — and I was fortunate enough to come across a few Redskins Super Bowl photos — mostly AP photos — that I don’t believe I’ve ever seen before. It’s not really any kind of salve for not having the actual team in the game, but … well, at least it’s Super Bowl-related.

A Few Pictures From Getaway Day
Posted by on January 5, 2011 – 9:57 am
Monday was getaway day, as the players packed up their lockers, got rid of their trash, and headed off into whatever it is they were planning to do this offseason. It’s also the day when the media gets footage of them doing all those things. Which means that it’s ALSO also the day when I take pictures of the media getting that footage.
Above, a media horde jokes with Carlos Rogers, who was straightforward about his potential future with the Redskins. “I wanna stay,” Rogers said, “but it’s a business situation. I can say I wanna stay all I want, but in the end it comes down to a business — and it’s a business on both sides of the table. So hopefully we can get something done.”
Below, more pictures of men putting things into trashbags while other people take pictures of them.

Pictures Of Guys Throwing And Catching At Today's OTA
Posted by on May 19, 2010 – 5:19 pmBecause two fields are in the process of being refurbished, all the players are concentrated on the one remaining grass field during the current round of OTAs. This has necessitated a few minor adjustments in the way practices are run. The specialists, for example, head out much earlier in the day to get their kicking in and have the whole field to themselves. The different position groups each have a little less space than usual during drills. And I keep finding myself getting workable pictures of only one or two drills.
Today, it’s the quarterbacks and wide receivers. If you’re not in the mood for that, you can safely skip the pictures in this post.

Pictures From Today's OTAs
Posted by on May 18, 2010 – 1:54 pmHere are a few pictures from today’s OTA session. Not a lot of specific notes: attendance appears to be roughly the same as it’s been — pretty much everyone besides Albert Haynesworth is here, with the understandable exception of a rookie or two whose classes haven’t wrapped up yet. Tempo is still excellent. Coaches still seem fierier than in the last two years. Spirits remain high. That kind of thing.
Oh, and as you can see from this picture, the defensive backs are still doing push-ups when they drop a pass, even in drills.
