Anniversary Uniforms: 1994 Version

Posted by Andrew Walker on May 14, 2012 – 3:34 pm

When the Redskins take the field this season for two games wearing their 80th Anniversary Uniforms, it actually won’t be the first time a version of that uniform has been worn in recent memory.

The team also wore a version of the same uniforms Sept. 25, 1994, in a home game vs. the Atlanta Falcons at Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium, and we’ve dug up photos from that day. Read more »

Slinging Sammy And The Anniversary Unis

Posted by Andrew Walker on May 11, 2012 – 4:38 pm

Who knows how many additional yards and touchdowns Sammy Baugh could’ve racked up had today’s technology been available to him?

It’s a question that’s fun to ponder, but both the Redskins and Nike had “Slinging Sammy” in mind as they developed the team’s new 80th Anniversary Uniforms, which were unveiled Thursday afternoon at Redskins Park.

Team, Effort, Tradition: New Nike Uniforms

Posted by Andrew Walker on May 10, 2012 – 6:19 pm

Team, effort and tradition. That’s the Washington Redskins way.

And what better way to parlay those three key components than to include them with the team’s newest uniforms?

That’s exactly what the team and Nike collaborated to do with the release of the team’s 80th Anniversary Uniforms.

New Jerseys Mean Old Name For Helu Jr.

Posted by Andrew Walker on May 10, 2012 – 2:35 pm

Roy Helu Jr. is named after his father, but fans watching the Redskins running back last season wouldn’t necessarily have known that.

Uniform rules at the time did not allow Helu Jr. to have just that — his last name with “Jr.” after it — on his uniform nameplate.

But those rules are all but history now. And Helu Jr. couldn’t be happier.

Redskins Fan Wins Race For First Jersey

Posted by Brian Tinsman on April 26, 2012 – 12:50 pm

Nike Football Facebook

In coordination with the 2012 NFL Draft, Nike has announced that the new Elite jerseys are on sale to the public, starting this morning in New York City.  If you’re a Redskins fan living in Giants country, the very first Redskins jerseys went on sale at 10 a.m. at the Official NFL Shop At Bryant Park.

It turns out that the man pictured above is not a buyer of jerseys, but rather a winner of his No. 98 Orakpo jersey.

Throughout the week, Nike has been conducting a game of ultimate hide-and-seek.  Figure out the clue to your favorite team, get there first, and you win the first jersey given to the average fan.  And that’s exactly what Paul F. did. Read more »

Orakpo Hand-Delivers His First Nike Jersey

Posted by Brian Tinsman on April 24, 2012 – 4:42 pm

AP Image

Linebacker Brian Orakpo was the Redskins’ official model for the prototype Nike Elite jerseys, earlier this month.  Now he’s the first person to re-gift his jersey, delivering one to rapper and Redskins’ super-fan Wale at Ben’s Next Door in D.C.

In an ad campaign released earlier this afternoon, Nike’s cameras takes a journey with the pair and capture their conversations.

Wale was born and raised in Washington, D.C., and remains an outspoken fan of his hometown team.  He is frequently seen on the sidelines of home games, has performed at halftime, and has gone on national sports shows in defense of the Burgundy and Gold.

Wale is a popular musician in the Redskins’ locker room, and is a worthy recipient of the first Nike Elite Redskins jersey.  Check out the video below: Read more »

Redskins Jerseys Technologically Superior

Posted by Brian Tinsman on April 4, 2012 – 12:42 pm

Perusing the comment sections on the blog and fan forums over the last 24 hours, I was surprised to see that while many fans are happy that the uniforms look mostly the same, others were passionately negative about the Nike Redskins approach.

Of those people, most were justifiably jaded by the hype machine behind yesterday’s unveiling, following months of speculation on false concept jerseys.  Others were upset that there were no gold pants, some wanted a total makeover, and “Dale C” was certain that he had spotted pink in the new Redskins jerseys.

I assure you that it’s not pink, just poor lighting.

But what fans should celebrate is that the Redskins chose tradition and substantive change, upgrading the jersey design to the best available options in the league.  Yesterday, we learned the specifics of the new technology, including cutting edge ‘Flywire technology,” “zoned mesh ventilation,” and aircraft-grade aluminum belts.  Seriously.

In total, the Redskins were one of only 10 NFC teams to make all nine available jersey upgrades.  In the NFC East, it was only the Redskins and Giants that elected for the state-of-the-art technology, while the Eagles elected to make no changes at all.  The Cowboys made eight-of-nine possible upgrades, but elected against the Flywire technology, which locks the jersey collars to the players pads.

For Redskins linebacker Brian Orakpo, that technology was the best feature of the new jerseys, as he shared his thoughts with the media in New York (via CSNWashington): Read more »
