Griffin III Rookie Of The Month — Again

Posted by Andrew Walker on November 29, 2012 – 10:58 am

Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III today was named the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Month.

Randall Liu, the NFL’s Director of NFC Communications, tweeted the news a little earlier this morning:

Bradford, by the way, was named the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Year that season.

In only three games in November, Griffin III completed 57-of-82 passes (69.1 percent) for 726 yards with eight touchdowns and a passer rating of 124.3. He also ran 29 times for 166 yards this month.

In his last two games, both against divisional opponents, Griffin III completed 33-of-42 passes (78.6 percent) for 504 yards with eight touchdowns. His passer rating of 146.3 in the past two weeks – now adjusted to include a recent scoring change that altered a Griffin III first-quarter pass to Pierre Garçon in Week 12 at Dallas to a seven-yard run – is the highest two-week rating by a rookie with at least 40 attempts in league history, according to Redskins Public Relations.

As we have been constantly pointing out here on the Redskins Blog, Griffin III’s second NFL Offensive Rookie of the Month is just the latest in a barrel full of awards for the Redskins quarterback so far this season, and include:

Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III has been named the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Month, the league announced this morning.

He’s the first Redskins rookie to win the award since offensive tackle Chris Samuels in October, 2000. Outside linebacker Ryan Kerrigan was named the NFL’s Defensive Rookie of the Month last September.

Through four weeks of the 2012 regular season, it’s the most notable of Griffin III’s building list of accolades that also include NFC Offensive Player of the Week, FedExAir Player of the Week and Pepsi Max NFL Rookie of the Week (Griffin III is a candidate for Rookie of the Week again this week; those results will be released Friday). Griffin III is also already considered by some to be an early-season MVP candidate.

Through the first four games of his professional career, Griffin III has completed 86-of-124 passes (69.4 percent) for 1,070 yards with four touchdowns and a passer rating of 103.2. Last Sunday, he became one of three players in NFL history to pass for more than 1,000 yards in the first four weeks of a rookie season, joining Carolina’s Cam Newton (2011) and Miami’s Ryan Tannehill (2012). Griffin III leads all rookies in passing yardage, completion percentage and passer rating.

With 180 passing yards on Sunday, Griffin III can join Newton as only the second player in history to throw for 1,250 yards in the first five games of his rookie season.

Today’s announcement gives us a chance to reflect on one of the — if not the — best rookie debuts in Redskins history (stats courtesy of Redskins Public Relations):
