VIDEO: Play-Action Pass Burns Defenses

Posted by Andrew Walker on December 22, 2012 – 9:30 am

One of the key reasons why the Washington Redskins’ offense seemingly didn’t miss a beat last Sunday vs. the Cleveland Browns with rookie quarterback Kirk Cousins making his first-career start was its use of the play-action pass.

The Redskins feature the No. 1 rushing offense in the league, so Cousins and offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan were able to use that to their advantage several times to get huge chunks of yards on various drives.

The NFL Network’s “Playbook” crew of Brian Baldinger, Sterling Sharpe and former Redskins quarterback Donovan McNabb broke this down in the above video.

The Washington Redskins went into Cleveland last Sunday and defeated the Browns 38-21 with an offensive attack that seemingly didn’t miss a beat without starting quarterback Robert Griffin III, who was nursing a sprained LCL in his right knee.

So how’d they do it?

That’s what former NFL head coaches and NFL Network analysts Brian Billick and Dennis Green examined on a recent segment of “The Coaches Show,” in which they praise Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan for putting rookie quarterback Kirk Cousins in a position to succeed in his first-career start.

Said Billick:

Sometimes the simplest of strategies in football are the most successful.

Take the Washington Redskins’ receivers thriving with their post routes — one of the most basic routes in the game. The NFL Network’s “Playbook” crew of Brian Baldinger, Sterling Sharpe and former Redskins quarterback Donovan McNabb broke this down in the above video.

VIDEO: Morris Says RG3 ‘Looked Good’

Rookies Robert Griffin III and Alfred Morris have, to this point of the season, racked up nearly a combined 5,000 total yards and 31 total touchdowns.

That’s staggering production for a rookie quarterback-running back duo, but Morris hopes a recent knee injury to Griffin III won’t stall their momentum.

Morris joined the NFL Network’s “Around The League” today and talked about Griffin III participating in his first practice Wednesday since injuring his knee in the fourth quarter of the Redskins’ 31-28, overtime victory against the Baltimore Ravens.

The video of Morris’ appearance is below, but here’s a snippet from the interview, which was crashed at the end by two teammates:

Billick, Green Throw Praise At Shanahan

Posted by Andrew Walker on December 10, 2012 – 10:23 pm

Dennis Green and Brian Billick have coached a combined 363 regular-season games in the National Football League, so having their respect is certainly something not taken lightly.

Green and Billick — currently analysts with the NFL Network — on Monday decided to throw some of that respect towards Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan during their segment, “The Coaches Show.”

The two former coaches were impressed with Shanahan’s playcalling on the two-point conversion in the final seconds of Sunday’s Redskins-Ravens game. After getting within two on a touchdown pass from Kirk Cousins to Pierre Garçon, the Redskins dialed up a surprising quarterback draw, which got Cousins into the end zone and tied the game.

The Redskins would go on to hold off the Ravens’ offense in overtime and then get a game-winning field goal from kicker Kai Forbath to win 31-28.

The video of Green and Billick is below, but here’s some snippets from their comments:

Trent Williams Thrives Under Pressure

Posted by Andrew Walker on December 10, 2012 – 9:06 pm

Trent Williams

Trent Williams has a lot of pressures on his big, broad shoulders.

Protecting a quarterback’s blind side is never a simple task, but when that guy is the labeled as the “savior” of your franchise, well, that’s pretty serious stuff.

Williams has responded to the pressure by turning in a Pro Bowl-caliber season through the first 13 games of the Redskins’ season. You can vote for Williams — and the rest of his Redskins teammates — for the Pro Bowl by clicking here.

Anyway, Williams today was a guest on the NFL Network’s “Around The League,” and talked about his job protecting Robert Griffin III and how the rest of the offense has gelled into one of the best units in the league.

First, though, here’s the transcript of Williams’ earlier teleconference with the Washington, D.C., media (courtesy of the Redskins Public Relations crew). See if you can figure out what was on the reporters’ minds:

VIDEO: ‘Skins Expose Giants With Option

Posted by Andrew Walker on December 8, 2012 – 12:00 pm

Check out how the NFL Network’s “NFL AM” crew breaks down how the Redskins offense’s option attack was able to break down the New York Giants’ defense Monday night in the 17-16 Washington win.

The option has been just one wrinkle of the Redskins’ East Coast Offense, which has blossomed under head coach Mike Shanahan and offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan. Tight end Logan Paulsen this week also addressed how the read-option and the pistol formation make the Washington offense’s wheels turn — though it didn’t all happen overnight.

Pay extra careful attention to this tomorrow, when the Redskins play host to the Baltimore Ravens at FedExField.

Official Review: Why Morgan’s TD Stands

Posted by Andrew Walker on December 6, 2012 – 3:34 pm

There was lots of talk after Monday night’s 17-16 Redskins victory over the New York Giants about quarterback Robert Griffin III‘s first-quarter fumble that magically ended up in the hands of wide receiver Joshua Morgan, who took it 13 yards to the end zone for a touchdown.

After the game, Griffin III joked that the play was a planned pitch.

“We didn’t run it in practice, because we wanted to save it for the game,” Griffin III said with a laugh. “I just knew he was going to be there ready for it. I just had to make sure I grabbed that guy’s leg that was right next to me, so that he wouldn’t get to it. Josh did a good job, making sure he was in the spot he needed to be.”

But all joking aside, the officials overseeing Monday’s game did a terrific job getting the call right. After review, they determined the ball was coming out of Griffin III’s possession before he could officially be ruled down.

The play was the subject of a recent “Official Review” segment on the NFL Network in which Carl Johnson, the NFL’s vice president of officiating, and Dean Blandino, the director of officiating, go over the decisions that were made with a fine-toothed comb.

Johnson and Blandino pointed out that everything would’ve been different had the play happened with less than two minutes remaining or on fourth down.

VIDEO: Alfred Morris On ‘NFL AM’

Alfred Morris on Monday night vs. the New York Giants had three awesome moments: he first eclipsed the 1,000-yard rushing mark; then he broke the Redskins’ rookie record for single-season rushing yards; and finally, he set a career-high for rushing yards with 124.

But what was probably his favorite moment from the game?

I’d guess it was his six-yard run on 3rd and 3 with 1:07 left in the game to seal Washington’s 17-16 victory.

Morris this morning was a guest on the NFL Network’s “NFL AM,” and talked about his under-the-radar performance so far, playing with Redskins rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III, his 1991 Mazda “Bentley,” and much more.

Here’s the video:

Heath Evans Not A Redskins Believer

One day after watching the Redskins defeat the New York Giants to get within one game of the NFC East leaders and defending Super Bowl champions, the NFL Network’s Heath Evans still isn’t a Washington believer.

Evans — a fullback from 2001 to 2010 with the Seahawks, Dolphins, Patriots and Saints — was asked yesterday on the NFL Network’s “Around The League” to buy or sell the Redskins’ chances at winning the NFC East this season (see the entire video below).

First, here’s what he Evans had to say:
