NFL Films: Redskins-Seahawks Preview

Posted by Andrew Walker on January 5, 2013 – 9:05 am

The NFC East champion Washington Redskins (10-4) play host to their first playoff game since 1999 on Sunday when they welcome the Seattle Seahawks (11-5) in the NFC Wild Card Round. Kickoff from FedExField on Sunday is set for 4:30 p.m. ET.

FedExField is an open-concept stadium with a natural-grass playing surface. The stadium seats 85,000.

The game will feature Rookie of the Year candidates Robert Griffin III and Russell Wilson at quarterback, but it is Redskins rookie running back and Rookie of the Year candidate Alfred Morris that could once again command the spotlight. In the Redskins’ winner-take-all victory against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 17, Morris rushed 33 times for 200 rushing yards with three touchdowns, all career highs.

NFL Films: The Origin Of A Rivalry

Posted by Andrew Walker on December 30, 2012 – 9:43 am

It started out, oddly enough, with a yet-to-be established NFL franchise and a fight song.

More than 50 years later, the Washington Redskins and the Dallas Cowboys continue to do battle twice a year as divisional foes and bitter rivals.

The series adds its next chapter tonight, when the Redskins play host to the Cowboys in a nationally-televised game that will determine the NFC East champion.

It’s perhaps the third most important game in the Redskins-Cowboys series history, right behind the 1972 and 1982 NFC Championship games, both of which resulted in Washington wins.

According to the NFL Films video above — which was originally presented in 1991′s “NFL’s Greatest Rivalries” — it all started in 1960, when the Cowboys were an NFL expansion franchise. The Redskins had been dominating the South airwaves, something that a franchise in Texas would threaten and something Washington owner George Preston Marshall wasn’t going to give up without a fight.

NFL Films: Redskins-Cowboys Preview

Posted by Andrew Walker on December 29, 2012 – 4:26 pm

The Washington Redskins on Sunday play host to the Dallas Cowboys at FedExField. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.

FedExField is an open-concept stadium with a natural-grass playing surface. The stadium seats 85,000.

The Redskins on Sunday are looking to clinch their first playoff appearance since the 2007 season. Washington also defeated Dallas, 27-6, at the end of that season to clinch their playoff berth.

Washington enters the game at 9-6 following their 27-20 victory against the Philadelphia Eagles last Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field. The Eagles took an early 7-0 lead in the first quarter before the Redskins scored all 27 points in the second and third quarters, and then held off the Eagles at the end. Washington’s first two scores came via Kai Forbath field goals, as the kicker broke the NFL record for consecutive field goals to begin a career (17).

MIC’D UP: London Fletcher Vs. Giants

WARNING: Don’t read this post or watch the video below unless you want to like London Fletcher even more.

You want intensity from your leaders during a critical game down the stretch against the divisional leaders? Redskins veteran middle linebacker London Fletcher defines intensity.

Fletcher was mic’d up for the Monday Night Football matchup against the New York Giants, a game that the Redskins rallied to win 17-16 to move a game back of the NFC East-leaders and reigning Super Bowl champions.

Fletcher — the undisputed emotional leader of the team — was all jacked up, and I’m so glad that he was chosen to be mic’d up for the broadcast and for NFL Films. At 37 years old, his passion and excitement for the game has never wavered.

Below is the video, but here are a few of my favorite snippets (though words don’t do it justice):

VIDEO: Griffin III On ‘The NFL Season’

Posted by Andrew Walker on November 7, 2012 – 7:32 am

(AP photo)

“Like professional football, super heroes are a decidedly modern phenomenon. In the 21st Century, we see, in a game, a reflection of ourselves; and we see in characters conceived by the imagination the embodiments of who we might like to be — if only we could. And then, in this game, along comes a player offering glimpses of our fantasies; visions of the impossible.”

Well, that’s an awesome analogy to get your Bye Week started, huh?

Those three sentences are taken from NFL Films’ “The NFL Season: A Biography” and its recent profile on Washington Redskins rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III.

Griffin III, of course, has taken the league by storm through the first nine weeks of the 2012 season, but it’s the stories about Griffin III and how he operates that have really been intriguing.

“The NFL Season” takes an interesting look at how super heroes have played a role in Griffin III’s upbringing and how he goes about his business on the football field.

Griffin III’s locker at Redskins Park (which is re-created in the video below) is filled with not uncommon decorations like inspirational messages, but it also is filled with action figures of various super heroes that Griffin III adored growing up.

Here’s the video from “The NFL Season:”

NFL Films: Evolution Of Robert Griffin III

Posted by Andrew Walker on October 23, 2012 – 10:58 pm

(AP photo)

Probably one of the best parts of the Redskins drafting Robert Griffin III has been getting the chance to see him evolve as an NFL quarterback before our very eyes each and every day.

Though a rookie, it didn’t take long for Griffin III to establish himself as a leader on the team, and, if nothing else, his play so far through seven weeks of the season has earned him that respect in the locker room and from other teams.

The fine folks at NFL Films chronicled Griffin III’s latest step up the ladder — his sensational go-ahead drive last Sunday against the New York Giants.

Their video, which you can see below, goes into detail about how Griffin III and the offense was able to have success against the Giants and take the lead late in the game. Enjoy:

NFL Films’ Cosell Ranks Griffin Over Luck

Posted by Brian Tinsman on April 24, 2012 – 2:07 pm

AP Image

When it comes to the art of film study, few football-heads do it better than Greg Cosell of NFL Films.  Impervious to workouts and character off the field, Cosell strictly analyzes how a player performs on the gridiron.

What you see is what you get, which is a refreshing perspective in the age of over-thinking.

In the lead up to Thursday’s draft, Cosell put together his first ever mock draft, designed to match biggest team need with best prospect on film.  He’s watched hundreds of hours of college film, because, well, that’s what he does:

I am solely basing my player evaluations on what’s on the tape. That’s what I do. I watch tape.

And what Cosell determined during that film study, is that Robert Griffin III is the better quarterback prospect.  Not ‘he could develop in the future.’  Not ‘better for certain systems.’  He’s a better quarterback, right now. Read more »

Chris Hanburger And Sam Huff: The Video

Posted by Matt Terl on February 4, 2011 – 10:40 am

Yesterday, I had the chance to talk to Sam Huff about Chris Hanburger — his teammate, fellow linebacker, and hopefully soon-to-be co-Hall-of-Famer. When the kind folks at Redskins.com TV read the piece, they were kind enough to dig up this bit of NFL Films footage about what legendary narrator John Facenda calls “the black-and-blue ballad of Big Sam and the hangman.” It’s one of those a-video-is-worth-ten-million-words kind of things. Enjoy.
