Redskins Players Have Left The Building

Posted by Andrew Walker on June 14, 2012 – 2:04 pm

After a morning of meetings and light workouts, most Redskins players have been seen throughout the rest of the day filing out of Redskins Park — many of whom with their families right by their side.

The end of mini-camp represents the last official team-organized activities of the offseason before the preseason officially kicks off late next month with training camp in Ashburn.

Rookie Garner Enjoys D.C. Area History

Posted by Andrew Walker on June 13, 2012 – 5:04 pm

The Washington D.C. area can be a lot to take in for a wide-eyed rookie, but Redskins’ rookie center Grant Garner is happy to eat it allĀ up.

A self-described “history buff,” Garner said he has enjoyed spending his weekends getting away from Redskins Park and into the several historical sites the area has to offer.

Delvin Johnson Aided By Basketball Skills

Posted by Andrew Walker on June 12, 2012 – 5:43 pm

At 6-foot-3, Delvin Johnson doesn’t exactly appear to have the size needed to dominate the boards in basketball.

But that’s exactly what he did his senior year at Woodruff High School in Woodruff, S.C.

Pictures From Today's OTAs

Posted by Matt Terl on May 18, 2010 – 1:54 pm

Here are a few pictures from today’s OTA session. Not a lot of specific notes: attendance appears to be roughly the same as it’s been — pretty much everyone besides Albert Haynesworth is here, with the understandable exception of a rookie or two whose classes haven’t wrapped up yet. Tempo is still excellent. Coaches still seem fierier than in the last two years. Spirits remain high. That kind of thing.

Oh, and as you can see from this picture, the defensive backs are still doing push-ups when they drop a pass, even in drills.

Anthony Armstrong Has His Second Impressive Mini-Camp

Posted by Matt Terl on May 13, 2010 – 2:44 pm

Every year, there are those players who stand out at mini-camps, training camps, and pre-season games and become fan favorites. The Redskins had one of those at the wide receiver position in Marko Mitchell. Mitchell, a seventh-round draft choice last year, impressed the fans with his athleticism during training camp and his three touchdowns in the preseason. He made the roster for the 2009 season, and those same fans awaited his inevitable breakout game.

Anthony Armstrong, meanwhile, was signed as a street free agent in October of that same season. He’s come up just about the hardest way possible, from West Texas A&M through the Arena League and something called the Intense Football League (which he discussed with me shortly after being signed; apparently, it’s intense). For the most part, no one took any notice of his arrival.

He worked hard on the practice squad, memorably offered his opinions on chitlins around Thanksgiving, and happily discussed Easy Bake ovens while attending charity events. When he was signed to a futures contract with nine other guys on the same day Mike Shanahan was announced as the new head coach, it didn’t really make a ripple. And when he had strong showing in the first mini-camp, no one really thought much of that either.

But something surprising happened between the first and second mini-camps:

Pictures From Mini-Camp 2, Day 2

Posted by Matt Terl on May 8, 2010 – 4:53 pm

Early on in the Redskins PR quote sheet recounting head coach Mike Shanahan’s post-practice conference, these two lines appear:

On his happiness with the attendance at mini-camp:
“Very happy.”

I think we can all agree that he looks borderline ecstatic in that photo above. Nevertheless, he does seem pleased with the mini-camp to date, so quotes from the head coach’s talk today seem like an excellent accompaniment for photos from today’s practice.

Some Interesting Headwear At Mini-Camp

Posted by Matt Terl on May 8, 2010 – 3:53 pm

There were some slightly unusual choices of headwear at Redskins mini-camp today (although you may have gathered that from the title of this post).

I guess Brian Orakpo wearing the cut-off sleeve on his head doesn’t count anymore — he’s been doing that as long as he’s been here, and actually back to college — but I’m including it anyhow, and there were others as well. Look: Read more »

Kareem Moore Downplays Working With The First Team

Posted by Matt Terl on May 8, 2010 – 3:35 pm

It’s a little tough to see up there, but that’s Kareem Moore on the far left, with LaRon Landry in the background, Rocky McIntosh to the right, and London Fletcher off to the far right. Which is to say, that’s a chunk of the likely first-team defense for your Washington Redskins. Which is further to say that Moore appears to be lining up as the starting free safety.

In fact, Free Lance-Star beat reporter Rich Campbell is putting it this way: “Kareem Moore played free safety with the first-string defense today.”

And Moore told me that he “definitely” feels that he’s improved since the first mini-camp, and he seems worlds more confident than he was in previous years. “I’m more comfortable, you know,” he said. “Going out there, being confident making calls, whether it be the secondary or the linebackers, I’m just goin’ out there doin’ my thing. Period.”

So, I asked him, would it be fair to say that he was in there as the first-team free safety today?

“No,” he said, “not really.”

Well then.
