Hall Of Famers Reflect On Time Together

Posted by Stephen Czarda on March 7, 2013 – 2:47 pm

Chris Hanburger, Roger Staubach

Over the last several seasons, Redskins fans have been treated to some splendid play by one of, if not the, best linebacking core in the league.

With perennial Pro Bowler and NFL iron man London Fletcher, 2013 Pro Bowlers Ryan Kerrigan and Lorenzo Alexander, former Pro Bowler Brian Orakpo, Perry Riley, and Rob Jackson, I think its safe to say that the Redskins depth at the linebacker position is simply unheard of.

However, while those six men have been instrumental in limiting opposing defenses for years, they have competition at staking claim as the best linebacking core in franchise history.

Hall of Famers Sam Huff and Chris Hanburger are arguably two of the great linebackers in NFL history and for a four-year stretch in the late 1960’s, they terrorized opponents week in and week out lining up in burgundy and gold together.

Find out what these two former teammates had to say about their reign of destruction together here:

Morris, Lichtensteiger Make ‘All-Joe Team’

The 21st All-Joe Team was recently announced by USA Today and Redskins running back Alfred Morris and guard Kory Lichtensteiger were selected.

The All-Joe Team was originally comprised by USA Today Sports writer Larry Weisman in honor of Kansas City defensive lineman Joe Phillips after he helped teammates Derrick Thomas and Neil Smith combined to take down quarterbacks 29 times during the 1992 season.

While Thomas and Smith received the brunt of attention, Phillips was instrumental in paving the way to get his teammates to the ball.

The team is an annual presentation of some of the hardest working players in the league. Often, these players are deemed “over-achievers” and rarely get the same level of media attention that some of the top superstars in the league receive. The only parameter of inclusion to the All-Joe Team is that the player has yet to be selected to the Pro Bowl.

However, many All-Joe Team selections go on to be selected to the annual contest in the Rainbow State. Prime example: 2011 All-Joe and 2012 Pro Bowl special teamer Lorenzo Alexander.

Find out why Morris and Lichtensteiger were deserving of the honor here:

Mike and John’s Tailgating Adventure

Posted by Chris Herting on January 31, 2013 – 1:52 am

Year after year Redskins fans show up in droves and provide one of the best tailgating atmospheres known to man. This season was no different.

Each week fans gathered their friends, fired up their grills and enjoyed the pregame festivities, turning the FedExField parking lots into a sea of burgundy and gold.

The scene was no different for Mike and John Stroll, two out-of-towners who partook in a marathon journey all season long to experience the ultimate tailgate.

Prior to the Redskins-Giants Monday Night game (a Redskins 17-16 victory), the brothers hit the FedExField lots looking for the perfect tailgate. And well, you all succeeded in showing them what Redskins Nation is all about: good friends, good food and good times!

Of course we already know that Redskins fans never disappoint when it comes to a good tailgate.

Anyway, be sure to check out the video which chronicles their visit in Washington beginning with a grueling workout from Pro Bowl LB Lorenzo Alexander and ending with a surprise visit from GM Bruce Allen along with some quality time with the Hogettes! Read more »

Alexander Relishes Role On Defense

Redskins linebacker Lorenzo Alexander spent all season backing up London Fletcher at inside linebacker, and that trend will likely continue on Sunday.

The Pro Bowl rosters are set up with two inside linebackers, Alexander will likely be the primary backup to Fletcher and Cardinals’ linebacker Daryl Washington. It’s a role that Alexander relished all season, and one that he embraces on the Pro Bowl stage.

“From what I hear, yeah, I will be playing defense,” he said.  “I mean, they only have two inside linebackers so I will have to play. I assume so.”

With his versatility on defense, Alexander could even backup teammate Ryan Kerrigan at outside linebacker.

Alexander will be suiting up for the Packers’ coaching staff, a staff that runs the base 4-3 scheme in Green Bay. Alexander has never worked with members of their staff before, but was prepared for the opportunity. Read more »

This Sunday at 4 p.m. ET, the 2013 Pro Bowl will kickoff at the sunny Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, Hawaii. The best players in the NFL this season (or at least most popular) will showcase their talents, and to enjoy some relaxing fun under the sun.

When not relaxing in the tropical heat, players have spent the past week practicing with their regular season conference foes, preparing for Sunday’s AFC vs. NFC clash. There was need for some introductions, but for others it was a chance to reconnect with childhood friends and former teammates. Read more »

Alexander Prepared For First Pro Bowl Trip

Posted by Brian Tinsman on January 24, 2013 – 5:09 pm

Alexander Pro Bowl

Redskins linebacker Lorenzo Alexander understands that the key to success is through preparation.  Throughout the offseason he prepares himself to be stronger and faster than the year before. During the season, he prepares himself to be the best player on gameday.

And when he finishes off a career year that leads the NFL in special teams tackles, he solicits advice on how to be ready for his first career Pro Bowl.

The first person he talked to was teammate London Fletcher, who will be joining Alexander for his fourth-straight trip to the Pro Bowl. Like Alexander, Fletcher was snubbed until later in his career, when he finally got the respect from his peers to make the trip to Hawaii.

But that’s about where the respect element ends, at least as far as hotel room charges in concerned. Read more »

Redskins Linebackers Garnering Attention

On Sunday, linebackers London Fletcher and Ryan Kerrigan were named to the NFC Pro Bowl squad. They join fellow linebacker Lorenzo Alexander, who was selected as the NFC special-teamer, as well as offensive tackle Trent Williams for the annual game in Hawaii.

It is the fourth-consecutive trip for Fletcher, who was snubbed before coming to Washington in 2007.  It is the inaugural trip for teammates Kerrigan, Williams and Alexander.

With the rightful inclusion of three Redskins linebackers in the Pro Bowl, the Redskins now boast one of the strongest linebacking corps in the NFL. This is a major accomplishment for defensive coordinator Jim Haslett and his coaching staff, who converted the Redskins from a 4-3 system to the 3-4 after his arrival in 2010.

Find out what the rest of the Redskins linebacker unit said here as well as an interesting fact that the Redskins share with a Super Bowl-bound team:

Is AFC East Key To NFC Championship?

Posted by Brian Tinsman on January 21, 2013 – 3:36 pm

Happy belated birthday to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who would have been 86 on Jan. 15 (his actual birthday), and a Happy Inauguration Day to all. Regardless of your political persuasion, everyone can enjoy a balmy Monday off of work in the middle of January.

Unless, of course, you’re working today, in which case thank you for choosing to procrastinate with the Redskins.

Yesterday’s playoff football action determined that the Baltimore Ravens will face the San Francisco 49ers on Super Bowl Sunday in two weeks.

Even if you don’t give two hoots about the matchup, there are many heart-stopping appetizers and hilarious commercials to be watched that day, so there is something for everyone.

To find out how the Redskins’ player predictions and a weird statistical anomaly played out, check the link below: Read more »

Alexander Plays NFL Expert, Convincingly

Posted by Brian Tinsman on January 18, 2013 – 5:45 pm

Lorenzo Alexander is one of the few Redskins players to ever win the Media Good Guy award multiple years, and did so in both 2011 and 2012. Alexander has a well-deserved reputation for offering honest, thoughtful insight into his life and his role with the Washington Redskins.

So it should come as no surprise that the “One Man Gang” can handle himself comfortably on camera, providing CSN Washington with a player’s perspective in the lead-up to this weekend’s NFL Championship action.

Alexander has the benefit of having played each of the four remaining teams at home in the last two seasons, with the San Francisco 49ers and New England Patriots in 2011 and the Baltimore Ravens and Atlanta Falcons in 2012.

He speaks with the poise and confidence of a veteran newscaster, and has a second career in sports if he so chooses.

Hear what he had to say, below: Read more »
