Football lifer Brian Baker could tell you coaching is the ultimate transient profession.

Before the Redskins announced Baker as the new outside linebackers coach in Washington, the Baltimore native and University of Maryland alumnus coached at four storied universities and seven other NFL clubs.

In the past 30 years, Baker developed multiple Pro Bowlers and studied under some of the game’s preeminent defensive minds.

Let’s examine the highlights in his coaching timeline.   Read more »

Linebackers Dine — On Robinson’s Tab

What do you get when you have eight hungry NFL linebackers and just one rookie in the entire group?

Keenan Robinson definitely learned the answer to that question last night.

His wallet now much lighter, Robinson treated seven of his fellow linebacker teammates to the annual rookie dinner last night in Washington, D.C.

In attendance was Robinson, Lorenzo Alexander, London Fletcher, Rob Jackson, Ryan Kerrigan, Brian Orakpo, Perry Riley and Chris Wilson.

Several of the guys went to Twitter to document this special occasion. Here’s a few of the tweets in order of their appearance last night:

Training Camp Video: LBs vs. RBs

Posted by Andrew Walker on August 6, 2012 – 4:30 pm

We conclude our videos from Monday’s training camp practice with one of our favorites: the linebackers vs. running backs pass-protection drill.

It’s a shame I didn’t record sooner — the play before the first one you see in the video below, outside linebacker Brian Orakpo absolutely destroyed his running back counterpart.

Redskins Linebackers Fans At Caps Game

Posted by Brian Tinsman on April 20, 2012 – 12:02 pm

It’s a city defined by its political divisions, the Washington sports community is coming together over one of their own in the playoffs.  The NHL Washington Capitals hosted the Boston Bruins last night for Game 4 of the first round of the playoffs, and several Redskins players had a night out at the Verizon Center.

Newly re-signed captain London Fletcher helped organize a linebackers’ trip to the game, and the starting unit (Fletcher, Riley, Orakpo and Kerrigan) Rocked the Red with the rest of D.C.:

Focus On Defensive Turnovers Gaining Traction

Posted by Brian Tinsman on August 17, 2011 – 4:49 pm

AP Image

Today is the first day of practice in the regular season format, which, starting Sunday, will have limited availability to the media.  Here’s some thoughts on the final practice that’s fully open to the media:

  • Redskins players broke the huddle before practice by yelling, “Hard work!”
  • In preparation of the game in the raucous RCA Dome in Indianapolis, Redskins coaches had large speakers out on the field to pipe in fan noise.  The cheering was used during 11-on-11 and would run from the time the players broke the huddle until the snap of the football, to simulate lining up in a hostile environment.
  • Brian Orakpo had a nice one-handed catch during the daily linebacker interception drills.  The first time I saw the drill this year, both he and Ryan Kerrigan had difficulty identifying the ball in the air.  Both looked much more comfortable in coverage now.
  • As a matter of fact, Kerrigan split out in coverage on a tight end in 11-on-11 drills and and picked off a pass from Matt Gutierrez that would have led to a big return.  This wasn’t a cheap pick–he jumped about two feet off the ground to pull this one down.
  • Cornerbacks Kevin Barnes and DeAngelo Hall were also dialed in on coverage and picked off a pass each.  Hall caught his near the goal line and prevented a score.  Barnes caught his out in the flat and would have taken it to the house.
  • In 1-on-1 battles, offensive guard Chris Chester matched up well against defensive end Barry Cofield, trading back and forth in dominance.

Check out some footage of the linebackers working on their coverage skills:

What To Watch Tomorrow: Linebackers

Posted by Matt Terl on August 12, 2009 – 4:42 pm

The Redskins linebacking corps finds itself in an interesting position this year. Perennial almost-all-pro London Fletcher is a rock at middle linebacker, and at weak-side linebacker, Rocky McIntosh is in his second year returning from knee surgery, usually a break-out time. And while strong-side linebacker was thought to be something of a concern heading into training camp given the departure of Marcus Washington, rookie Brian Orakpo has been impressive learning the position.

But while those have been the main LB stories so far, there are still a whole bunch of other guys working at linebacker, and they’re the ones we’re likely to see the most tomorrow night. You’ve got two drafted rookies in Cody Glenn and Robert Henson. You’ve got an undrafted rookie in Darrel Young, out of Villanova. Chris Wilson is making the same DE/LB position switch as Orakpo. Alfred Fincher showed in last year’s preseason that he has the potential to be a special teams ace. And H.B. Blades is establishing himself as an experienced go-to utility linebacker. Read more »
