Shanahan Overzealous For Shotgun Start
Posted by on May 8, 2012 – 10:11 amEither Redskins’ head coach Mike Shanahan was really eager to tee off in Monday’s charity golf tournament, or his outside linebacker host is a really slow driver.
Nonetheless, hilarity ensued Monday at the seventh annual Leukemia Golf Classic, when the third-year head coach — ready to hit the links — accidentally bumped the rear of Orakpo’s golf cart.

Orakpo Leukemia Golf Classic, Twitter-ized
Posted by on May 7, 2012 – 6:50 pm
Forget having a case of the Mondays.
At least on this particular day.
Several Redskins players, coaches and team officials were away from the practice fields and meeting rooms Monday to take part in the seventh annual Leukemia Golf Classic.
And, apparently, several players’ phones weren’t too far from their golf balls and tees, either.

Video: OLBs On Charity, Golf Style
Posted by on May 7, 2012 – 5:56 pmBrian Orakpo and Ryan Kerrigan enjoy making life miserable for opposing teams’ quarterbacks, but the Redskins’ outside linebackers also know the misery of trying to hit a straight golf shot.
Orakpo and Kerrigan caught up with Amanda Mitchell Monday morning prior to teeing off in the seventh annual Leukemia Golf Classic at the Trump National Golf Club. The duo were talking about everything from the event’s cause — which is aimed at finding a cure for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma — to proper golf attire.

Video: Armstrong Works On Golf Game
Posted by on May 7, 2012 – 5:16 pmAnthony Armstrong was having a good time on the golf course Monday afternoon.
With the opportunity to help contribute to a great cause, the third-year Redskins receiver also found himself in the middle of a lively group at Monday’s seventh annual Leukemia Golf Classic at the Trump National Golf Club.
Armstrong also shared his strategy when approaching any shot — and it’s apparently not as difficult as it’s made out to be.

Seventh Annual Leukemia Golf Classic Underway
Posted by on May 7, 2012 – 11:06 amA collection of Redskins players, coaches and team officials are hitting the links today for a good cause.
The seventh annual Leukemia Golf Classic – hosted for a second straight year by Redskins linebacker Brian Orakpo – is set to tee off today at 11 a.m. at the Trump National Golf Club in Potomac Falls, Va.
The event – started in 2006 by then-Redskins quarterback Mark Brunell – serves as a fundraiser for the National Capital Area Chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, and has raised closed to $885,000 since its inception.
Redskins wide receiver Anthony Armstrong showed up for the event dawning a bright gold polo – per the course rules, I’m sure.
Armstrong said he’s gunning for first place.
“I’m going to be playing like the old Tiger (Woods),” he said with a laugh.

Pictures From Brian Orakpo’s Leukemia Golf Classic

The Leukemia Golf Classic has seen its fair share of mild awkwardness through the years. It was originally Mark Brunell’s event; Brunell passed it on to Jason Campbell without much ceremony. Last year, the Jason Campbell Leukemia Golf Classic was hosted by Chris Cooley after the eponymous QB was traded to Oakland two days earlier. That was somewhat awkward, as covered in excruciating detail here.
Presumably to avoid any such awkwardness this year and into the future, the event this year was billed as The Leukemia Golf Classic, Hosted By Brian Orakpo. That seemed pretty much bulletproof — in the unlikely even that Orakpo was sent out of town, the organizers could’ve simply swapped someone else’s name into the “hosted by’ slot. But the awkwardness this year had nothing to do with the host and everything to do with the guests: because of the ongoing NFL labor issues, the coaches (and team staff) in attendence were only allowed to converse with the players in attendence in the most cursory, polite way.
This added a bit of dinner-party-with-recently-divorced-couples ambience to an otherwise terrific event on a gorgeous day at a beautiful (and newly-upgraded) golf course, although everyone involved went to great lengths to downplay the awkwardness and emphasize the benefits.
Event Chair Troy Cromwell, for example, of presenting sponsor Verizon Business: “We’re trying to put together something fun, something that brings a lot of athletes and a lot of corporations together to raise a lot of money for a good cause,” Cromwell said. “I’m glad they were all able to make it. I know it’s uneasy for a few folks, but I’m glad they’re here.”
Redskins General Manager Bruce Allen saw things similarly. “”This is about golf today,” Allen said, “and this is about leukemia, and if we can beat them, we’ll be happy.”

In fact, Allen — prompted by John Keim of the Washington Examiner — even managed to have some fun with the situation.
Keim joked with Allen about talking football strategy on the golf course, suggesting that the G.M. might look at a shot and say something like, “Boy, that shot reminds me of that 3-4 look we saw against Dallas.”
“I think I’m allowed to say ‘Fore,’” Allen said.
Here, then are some pictures from the morning at Trump National Golf Club in Potomac Falls, Virginia.
