2012 Unsung Heroes From Giants Rivalry

Posted by Stephen Czarda on May 21, 2013 – 2:20 pm

In continuing to expand on the Redskins deeply rooted rivalry with the New York Giants, let’s take a look at some of the unsung heroes from the two tightly contested NFC East matchups in 2012.

While the Burgundy and Gold would go 5-1 against their division foes en route to their first division title since 1999, the one blemish on their record was a 27-23 loss at the Giants in Week 7.

If it weren’t for a late touchdown, I would be writing about how the Redskins went undefeated in the division play.

With the Redskins 17-16 victory on Monday Night Football in Week 13 in mind as well, let’s take a look at some of the performers who names may have not been on website “player of the game” nomination lists, but were still influential.

Reliving Season Series With The Giants

Posted by Stephen Czarda on May 21, 2013 – 11:18 am

ReG5

Just minutes after the New York Giants won their second Super Bowl in five years last February, “experts” across the nations quickly latched onto the Giants wagon in belief that they were going to win the NFC East and so forth in 2012.

Shoot some were predicting a .500 record between the two squads-with the Redskins going 3-13 to the Giants’ 13-3.

This was well before the Redskins got Robert Griffin III and Alfred Morris.

While the Burgundy and Gold’s lone loss in the NFC East last year was at the hands of Big Blue, the nail-bitter still had some memorable moments nonetheless.

So without further ado, here is a recap of the 2012 season series between the NFC East foes (with only one division champion in the end.)

Brian Orakpo and Ryan Kerrigan form quite the duo on the outsides of a talent-laden linebacking unit. The two have combined for three Pro Bowl appearances, 45.5 sacks, and countless opponents who fear entering the duo’s territory.

While Redskins Nation is waiting for the moment Orakpo rejoins Kerrigan and the rest of the Burgundy and Gold, the youngest generation of footballers in the DMV will be able to catch a glimpse of the pair and gain unparalleled knowledge from the former first round picks at the Brian Orakpo/Ryan Kerrigan Football Camp this July.

Moss’ Jump Ball Catch No. 64 Of Top Plays

Posted by Stephen Czarda on May 9, 2013 – 3:17 pm

A70G9535

Since 2005 the Redskins have seen about as much change as any team in the league.

Mike Shanahan is the third head coach during that time, Robert Griffin III has taken over the reins of the offense and firmly entrenched himself as a franchise corner piece, and weapons Fred Davis, Pierre Garcon, and Josh Morgan have been added to spread the threat across the field.

While there has plethora of new faces, one man has remained a constant figure despite all the moving pieces—wide receiver Santana Moss.

After being acquired in trade with the New York Jets, Moss instantly became the Redskins number one receiving threat.

Moss would lull defensive backs to sleep before whizzing pass them with his blazing speed.

Just when it looked like Moss’ time as an elite receiver was reaching its deadline No. 89 recorded a team-high eight touchdowns.

This touchdown against the Eagles, however, may have been the crème de la crème.

Morgan All Hands On Deck To End Cancer

Posted by Stephen Czarda on May 8, 2013 – 4:11 pm

The Washington Redskins have been one of the biggest supporters of finding a cure for breast cancer.

Last October Chris Cooley hosted the fifth annual All-Star Survivors Celebration at Redskins Park, where 20 ladies or better yet “All-Stars”, were treated to a ladies day with No. 47 himself.

Earlier today Tanya Snyder, wife of Redskins owner Daniel Snyder, was recognized as the American Cancer Society Mother of the Year for her efforts to end breast cancer.

When Josh Morgan returned to the hometown that he kept so close to his heart even when he was across the country in San Francisco, he made an effort to reach out in the local community to touch the lives of his fellow DMV citizens.

Morgan has spent countless hours in classrooms speaking with the youngest of Redskins Nation and was the grand marshal for the Cherry Blossom Festival—a Washington, D.C. exclusive—taking in the sights and sounds of downtown that were reminiscent of his childhood days.

Now, he is ready to take those same streets again to end breast cancer once and for all.

Garcon’s Elusive Touchdown Is A Top Play

During the 2012 offseason the Washington Redskins reloaded their offense with several big play, quick-strike weapons on the offensive side of the football.

When free agency’s flood gates were unlocked, the Redskins bolstered their wide receiver core by adding the Super Bowl experienced Pierre Garcon and homegrown talent Josh Morgan.

Then during the annual NFL Draft, they acquired soon-to-be record setting rookies Robert Griffin III and Alfred Morris.

Not a bad quartet to repackage your assault around.

In their regular season debut together, the Griffin III-Garcon connection struck early, torching the New Orleans Saints defense for an 88-yard touchdown in the first quarter that was stamped off by the now internationally famous “Griffining” celebration.

Then later in the season the duo struck gold again, only this time the whole country witnessed their magnificence.

Multifaceted Reed Added To Offense

With the 85th pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, the Washington Redskins focused on adding to their elite offense with the selection of Jordan Reed out of Florida.

For weeks, mock drafts predicted that the Redskins would zero in on the defensive side of the pigskin with their first few picks.

It did not matter if it was a corner, safety, or linebacker; it was just the trendy thing to do.

Well the trendy read-option attack that Washington ignited in 2012 has just added another weapon to the arsenal in the form of a 6’2″ 236 pound athlete that has the versatility that head coach Mike Shanahan will love. Reed could be a serious threat when quarterback Robert Griffin III is rolling out on play action.

According to his NFL.com draft profile, Reed can be used at multiple positions ranging from tight end to running back.

Awesome.

Check out this highlight package of the newest Redskin.

Morris, Griffin III Never Hit A Rookie Wall

Last year when Robert Griffin III took the field you would have thought that he was a season veteran with years of experience in the NFL, not someone who had  been at the podium with Roger Goodell at the draft just months earlier .

Along with his backfield partner Alfred Morris, the duo lead the league in rushing yards. Whether it was Morris running straight up the middle or a constructed a read-option keeper for No. 10, the two combined for over 2,400 yards and 20 touchdowns.

Griffin III sat down with Larry Michael once again on the set of Redskins Nation for the sixth edition of “10 Days With No. 10″ to touch on his thoughts about his fellow 2012 NFL Draft colleague , on neither hitting a rookie wall late in the season and about being a leader and captain of a division-winning team.

Also, he explains what when down during Josh Morgan’s touchdown play in the Monday Night Football game against the New York Giants.

Was it a fumble or a designed toss?

Hall, Tapp To Reunite In Washington

Posted by Stephen Czarda on April 4, 2013 – 9:28 am

DeAngelo Hall

With official word that the Washington Redskins have resigned cornerback DeAngelo Hall, his teammates were excited to have him back to help defend the 2012 NFC East title.

Hall has been with the Burgundy and Gold since 2008 when the team signed him to a deal that November. In his five years in Washington, number 23 has appeared in 68 games, starting 64, and was selected to represent the NFC in the 2010 Pro Bowl.

While Hall will see familiar faces from his time in the DMV such as Josh Wilson, Reed Doughty and Robert Griffin III, there is one man who has seen the talented player grow since his high school days in Chesapeake, Virginia.

Redskins, Ravens Hoop For Charity

Posted by Stephen Czarda on March 25, 2013 – 1:11 pm

On Saturday, the Washington Redskins and Baltimore Ravens tangled for the second time in months. For those of you that don’t recall how the events unraveled between the two teams in their first encounter, just check out this video as a reminder.

On this day, the two franchise that play a mere 30 miles away from each other on Sundays during the season, were showcasing their talents in a different sports arena where the final score meant literally nothing.

Ravens wide receiver Torrey Smith was holding his third annual Torrey Smith Foundation Charity Basketball Game and invited some of the NFC East champs to do battle at the rim. He and the rest of hims teammates were hoping to extract revenge for their lost at FedExField and more importantly, to raise money for his foundation.

Find out how the game when here:
