Griffin III Comes Home To Redskins Park

Posted by Brian Tinsman on April 27, 2012 – 8:18 pm

After a day of plane tracking, Twitter photos, and blog teasers, new Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III has finally come home to roost at Redskins Park.

Griffin arrived with his family at the facilities late this afternoon and was escorted around his new place of employment by the Redskins brass.  This was his second trip to the facilities, but the first wearing a Redskins emblem.  The last time he came by was several weeks ago for his official visit with the team.

This visit was a lot less awkward, and lot more exciting for everyone involved.

Redskins broadcaster Larry Michael and Jordan Beane made the trip up to New York early this morning in order to document the Griffin trip back to Washington.  Here’s a video recap of the first of many Redskins days with Robert Griffin III: Read more »

Redskins Rookie Cheerleaders At The Calendar Shoot

Posted by Matt Terl on May 25, 2011 – 4:52 pm

Jordan Beane, Official Blog Cheerleader Calendar Shoot Correspondent, didn’t have time to add a lot of tedious “words” to today’s update. Beane claims that he’s “busy” with “work things”; I suspect that he’s playing beach volleyball and drinking elaborate frozen things. But he was kind enough to send back pictures of a few of the rookie cheerleaders from their photoshoots, which is correspondent-y enough for me. You can click any of the photos for a larger version.

More pictures after the jump.

Redskins Cheerleaders And Limping Devils At The Calendar Shoot

Posted by Matt Terl on May 24, 2011 – 4:23 pm

Redskins Blog travel correspondent Jordan Beane checks in again from the Redskins Cheerleaders calendar shoot in Punta Cana, D.R.

For reports from the cheerleaders themselves, be sure to check out their blog on Redskins Rule. For even more, including (I believe) some exclusive photos from the calendar shoot, download the Official Redskins Cheerleader App. Until then, though, here’s Beane.

There’s a fairly simply formula for most calendar shoots here in the Dominican Republic. One beautiful girl plus water, sun and sand equals a gorgeous shot. Repeat. It’s a proven winner. However all good photographers need to be willing to change their plans at a moment’s notice.

Like when these guys show up. (Click photos to enlarge.)

The masked men dancing with Redskins cheerleader Emerald are two Diablos Cojuelos, the most popular costumes worn during the Dominican Republic’s Carnival. Dressed up to “symbolize the opposite, a world upside”, they also really add something to a calendar shoot.

A Dispatch From The Redskins Cheerleader Calendar Shoot

Posted by Matt Terl on May 23, 2011 – 1:07 pm

Jordan Beane last appeared on this blog as our Combine Correspondent, sending back dispatches on the pre-draft goings-on in Indianapolis. Now, his day job with the Redskins Broadcast Network has sent him to stare at scantily-clad folks in another exotic location, and he’ll again be reporting back to the blog. This trip may be less directly impactful on the team’s off-season moves, but I think you’ll still be plenty interested. Here’s Beane:

Whenever I told people that I’d be traveling to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic to document the 2011 Redskins cheerleader calendar shoot here, I’d inevitably get a response along these lines:

  • “Dude, you’re so lucky.”
  • “What a tough job YOU have.”
  • “Beaches, drinks, Redskins cheerleaders? I don’t feel sorry for you at all.”
  • “Can I go?”

As I work through my second day of waking up before 5:00 AM for our sunrise shoots, I’m sure they wouldn’t be so quick to trade places now.

I mean, this is too early to wake up no matter WHAT you’re doing afterward.

Still, I’ve got it relatively easy. The cheerleaders are up and getting ready while I’m still snoozing, rising at two or three AM in preparation for shooting in front of that perfect Dominican sunrise and all around our hotel. And, as you can see below… Read more »

Notes From The Combine: A Reclamation Project

Posted by Matt Terl on March 3, 2011 – 10:50 am

Redskins Blog NFL Combine correspondent Jordan Beane brought home a few more notes and conversations from the Combine, about some of the things you don’t always get to see. This is one such piece. Beane?

There are many things that are outstanding about the Combine, but the food at Lucas Oil Field is not one of them.

Overpriced hot dogs, sketchy looking hamburgers, lukewarm drinks – the spread is disappointing. Instead the assembled journalists have to subside on a never-ending buffet of interviews, with the players paraded out every few minutes to be picked apart by members of the media. While many of the bigger names go up to a podium to speak, the rest of the guys end up at tables where a small huddle of reporters peppers them with questions.

With around 300 Combine invitees, even the most hardened draftnik (other than Mel Kiper) would have trouble knowing who everyone is, so my thought was to sit down and take in a random interview with a player I didn’t know. As my subject, a tight end from South Carolina, sat down I looked forward to a heartwarming story of a player who had taken every opportunity to become the best college football player he could be, was honored by his responsibility as an NCAA athlete, upheld its virtues, and was hoping for a shot in the NFL.

When the reporter sitting next to me took the opportunity to ask the first question, it became clear that this wasn’t going to be that type of interview.

“What was this year like for you, with all the being out and all the controversy and everything?” Read more »

Notes From The Combine: Big In Japan

Posted by Matt Terl on March 2, 2011 – 9:30 am

Redskins Blog NFL Combine correspondent Jordan Beane brought home a few more notes and conversations from the Combine, about some of the things you don’t always get to see. This is one such piece. Beane?

For what amounts to a parade of guys lifting heavy things and running very fast, the coverage of the NFL Combine has grown to near ludicrous levels. Anyone who covers the NFL in any sort of capacity, be it a beat writer for the Green Bay Press Gazette or Peter King from SI, seems to have made their way to Indianapolis. In my time at Lucas Oil Field I saw Todd McShay doing a live hit for ESPN, Don Banks of Sports Illustrated searching for a soda and Rich Gannon half ignoring the callers on his SiriusXM radio show. That doesn’t even count the seemingly endless number of NFL Network employees scurrying around the stadium (there were so many of them that if they all moved full-time to Indianapolis I’m fairly sure Indiana would get one more rep for the House of Representatives). Yet to me, no one summed up the insanity that is Combine coverage like Ikuma Isaac.

Isaac works for Nippon TV Japan, one of the island nation’s biggest television stations, and NFL Japan.com. Based out of New York, Isaac hosts a weekly one-hour television show for NFL fans in Japan, which is now entering its 4th season. He and his camera guy worked feverishly while I was there, interviewing scores of players. While it may seem foolish to believe that a mother of two in Osaka would be interested in hearing how Greg McElroy picks apart a Tampa Two defense, Isaac says the NFL actually has a pretty big following in Japan.

Updates From Indianapolis, Day 2 [Updated 4:50]

Posted by Matt Terl on February 25, 2011 – 4:50 pm

intrepid correspondent Jordan Beane will be texting me brief updates from the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianpolis. I’ll be updating this post with those updates and adjusting the updated time in the title. Expect mostly behind-the-scenes and slice-of-life updates; I don’t think you’ll be seeing analysis of Cam Newton’s throwing motion here. Check out the Day 1 updates here to get the backstory on why he’s so fixated on Rex Ryan, among other things.

Unless otherwise noted, these timestamped updates are Beane’s.
* * * * * * * *
[4:50]

* * * * * * * *

[4:10]No Cam Newton presser today. I’m sure all those who have waited all day for that are super pumped about that news.

* * * * * * * *

[4:04] Would love to know how often I’ve accidentally photobombed the NFL Network in the past 24 hours.

* * * * * * * *

[3:20] Mark Ingram on the podium now. People here considering him the appetizer for Cam Newton right after. He looks short — reminds me of Jerome Bettis from the hips up.

* * * * * * * *

[2:49] Best part of the Combine is that all the media travels all this way to sit right outside of the Combine. They would actually be able to watch it if they stayed home on their couch. Read more »

Combine Correspondent: An Encounter With A Fullback Prospect

Posted by Matt Terl on February 25, 2011 – 1:08 pm

Official Redskins Blog NFL Combine correspondent Jordan Beane checks in. This update is especially timely, as it centers on a chance encounter with a fullback prospect — while, over on Redskins.com, Gary Fitzgerald is doing a roster review of fullbacks. That’s some good synergy right there, kids! Enough from me — here’s Beane.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – In case I haven’t made it abundantly clear, there are a lot of NFL people currently residing in a six block radius of Indianapolis. I’ve only been in town for seven hours and have already run into Kevin Gilbride, Rex Ryan (repeatedly) and scores of lower level NFL types, all with their team logo proudly emblazoned on some article of their clothing. As for the people that they’re all in town to see, the 2011 Combine participants, they’re nowhere to be found. Whether they’re undergoing a battery of tests, studying at the last minute for the Wonderlic test (someone even put together a book to help out prospective draft picks, like they’re taking the SAT’s) or sequestered away in some underground bunker, I’ve yet to see a real NFL draft prospect walking around the streets of Indianapolis. Well, that’s mostly true.

Updates From Indianapolis [Updated 4:46]

Posted by Matt Terl on February 24, 2011 – 4:46 pm

Intrepid correspondent Jordan Beane will be texting me brief updates from the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianpolis all day. I’ll be updating this post with those updates and adjusting the updated time in the title. Expect mostly behind-the-scenes and slice-of-life updates; I don’t think you’ll be seeing analysis of the top offensive tackle prospects here.

* * * * * * * *

[4:46] Just found out the place we’re staying at opened two weeks ago. Didn’t realize there was such a thing as “new elevator smell”. Apparently there is.

* * * * * * * *

[4:02] Not a text from Beane, but here’s tonight’s Redskins Nightly News, featuring a snippet of the Mike Shanahan interview referenced below.

* * * * * * * *

[3:41] This picture is us shooting B-roll for Redskins Nation from my 28th floor hotel room. Not sure if it looks creepy or James Bond-like. Probably the former.

* * * * * * * *

[3:33] Just got done shooting a great interview between head coach Mike Shanahan and Larry Michael. Shanahan had a lot of interesting things to say. Stay tuned to Redskins Nation to check it out.

* * * * * * * *

[3:02] Rex Ryan just walked by again. At this point I can only assume the he’s following me.

* * * * * * * *

[2:58] Team doctors told us they checked out eighty-some-odd people today. And it’s only the first day, and it was half an hour ago when he told us that. The number of tongue depressors used at an hourly rate here must be astounding.

* * * * * * * *

[2:14] There’s also a Methodist convention in the same hotel. Or I was lied to and teams have started to rely more heavily on grandmothers in their scouting departments.

* * * * * * * *

[1:56] The Jets parade continues here as Rex Ryan and GM Mike Tannenbaum sauntered by. Ryan not nearly as big or as loud in person.

* * * * * * * *

[12:16] First celebrity sighting. Jets special teams coach made famous on HBO’s Hard Knocks. Was surprisingly quiet as he walked through the lobby. Read more »

Redskins Blog's 2011 Combine Correspondent

Posted by Matt Terl on February 24, 2011 – 9:52 am

For a whole variety of reasons, I won’t be attending the NFL Scouting Combine this year (which is fortunate, as it kicks off today in Indianapolis but I’m still sitting in Loudoun County, Virginia). But it wouldn’t do for this blog to miss out on several days of football prospects jumping up and down, or on every single person in the NFL being in one city at the same time. So since I can’t be there myself, I’ve got a correspondent on the ground in Indy — this guy:

No, not Chris Cooley, although that would no doubt be entertaining. THIS guy, down there at the bottom right of that picture:

That’s Jordan Beane. His day job — as you can probably guess from the picture — is for the Redskins Broadcast Network. But Beane’s also an experienced writer — has a degree in it and everything! — who just the other day was telling me that one of his dreams in life is to be a remote correspondent covering dramatic upheaval in a foreign country.

I didn’t have the resources to accomodate that, nor is the social unrest in Libya really within the purview of the Redskins Blog, but Indianapolis … that I could do, especially since he was already going to be there for RBN. It’s not Beane’s first time at the Combine, which will also be helpful to his coverage. Here, in his first dispatch, he explains how last year’s Indianapolis experience will infom this year’s coverage.
