Jon Jansen Released

One name fewer to include as you try to predict the Redskins’ 2009 offensive line: Jon Jansen was released by the team today after a meeting this morning with owner Daniel M. Snyder, executive vice president of football operations Vinny Cerrato, and head coach Jim Zorn.

Jansen was the team’s second-round pick in 1999, started at right tackle pretty much immediately, and has played in 126 games for the team since then, including 123 starts.

Friday, January 16: Redskins in Pro Football Weekly

I didn’t read a lot of ProFootballWeekly.com over the season, but maybe I should start. Just looking over the site briefly today turned up plenty of Redskins content.

They named Chris Horton to their All-Rookie team, which brings back happy memories of all those weekly awards from early this season.

Even though he was nearly Mr. Irrelevant last year, Redskins SS Chris Horton used his big-hitting ability to make an instant difference. Besides his 76 tackles, he also had three interceptions.

They’ve got Jon Jansen offering up his thoughts on this weekend’s Cardinals/Eagles game, which are about what you’d expect — can the Eagles stop the Cardinals passing game, and can the Cardinals stop McNabb and Westbrook — and on working in TV.

Former players, I think they just get a little more instant credibility because people say, ‘Ok, well, they lived it. They saw it. They must know what they are talking about.’ If they actually knew that none of us know what we are talking about, they’d be disappointed.

It’s a good, self-deprecating line, but Jansen is either being polite or disingenuous — he’s terrific on TV, and should have a comfortable job there whenever his playing days finish up.
