Welcome to your weekly Redskins Social Media Spotlight, where we highlight the trendy topics and social media campaigns going on this week in Redskins Nation. Check it out and make suggestions below.

As we continue to bring you updates each week to let you know how Redskins players are spending their offseason, we’re happy to inform fans that players are beginning to slowly trickle back in to Redskins Park after a few months away following the season. Believe it or not, the draft is a little more than a month away which means that OTAs and Redskins football is just around the corner.

In the meantime, we’re here to at least try and keep you engaged until that time comes.

You can check out last week’s Social Media Spotlight which debated the hot topic of whether it’s acceptable for men to wear yoga pants at the gym (still undecided) as well as recapped LB Ryan Kerrigan and K Kai Forbath’s golf outing, QB Robert Griffin III and Baylor’s upset over #4 Kansas, and LB London Fletcher announcing, via Twitter, his plans to return.

This week, we’ll catch a glimpse of WR Dezmon Briscoe working out and working hard, including what Griffin III thinks about the wide receiver’s workout. We’ll also take a look at DE Jarvis Jenkins’s inspirational quote, Kai Forbath’s comments on the return of LS Nick Sundberg and P Sav Rocca, and, last but not least, we’ll bring you WR Pierre Garçon’s take on March Madness.

Plus, does anyone remember the movie Space Jam? We sure do and so does G Chris Chester. We’ll let Chris give his thoughts on Bill Murray’s role in the film and more. Welcome to this week’s Redskins Social Media Weekly Spotlight!

Happy ‘Golden Birthday’ To Jarvis Jenkins

Posted by Brian Tinsman on April 24, 2012 – 3:03 pm

What would a birthday be without a picture of a teammate hug? (FYI: This photo was taken last August.)

Things have been awfully serious on the blog recently, and it’s time to freshen things up.  Fortunately, defensive end Jarvis Jenkins was kind enough to be born 24 years ago today, and is celebrating his one and only “golden birthday.”

2012 Redskins Have First Day In The Office

Posted by Brian Tinsman on April 16, 2012 – 4:58 pm

The Redskins had their first dose of offseason conditioning this morning at Redskins Park, as 61-0f-63 players reported for voluntary workouts.

Players were generally upbeat, and it was a first sighting for some players in quite some time.  The highlight of the morning was London Fletcher on the premises to sign his brand new contract with the team.  Players joked and high-fived with their captain in between workouts, and players hung around after the workouts to catch up on the offseason.

Several players tweeted their enthusiastic feeling about being back to work on a beautiful day: Read more »

The gap between the start of free agency and the draft can be one of the longest of the NFL calendar year, but this is a good weekend for your Redskins fix.  Lots of players will be out and about in the community this weekend, and you can catch some of them at the following events:

Anthony Armstrong is hosting a Celebrity All-Star basketball game tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Stafford High School. (Address: 33 Stafford Indian Lane, Fredericksburg, VA 22405).   Redskins and Ravens fans will be treated to a jointly-hosted event by Armstrong and Maryland grad Torrey Smith in Fredericksburg, Va.  This is the second annual “Ravens vs. Redskins themed Celebrity Basketball Game,” and brings great football players together for a great cause.  Proceeds to benefit Armstrong’s Lucky13 Charitable Foundation.

(via Mike Jones, Washington Post): Collectors’ Showcase of America sports memorabilia show Saturday at the Dulles Expo Center. (Address: 4320 Chantilly Center, Chantilly, Virginia 20151).  Redskins players Lorenzo Alexander, Roy Helu, Evan Royster and Darrel Young, along with former Redskins Dexter Manley, Ravin Caldwell, Maxie Baughan, Darryl Grant, Keith Griffin, Roy Jefferson, Bob Kuziel, Paul Laaveg, Walt Rock, Lonnie Sanders, as well as former defensive coordinator Richie Petitbon and former general manager Charley Casserly are expected to be in attendance.

(via Susan Jenkins, Crofton Patch): Meet Josh Wilson at the new Dick’s Sporting Goods store in Waugh Chapel Towne Centre.   (Address: 1417 South Main Chapel Way, Crofton Md.)  The store will give out wristbands starting at 8 a.m. Saturday, Wilson will be at the store from 1-3 p.m. The store will also give away Columbia T-shirts while supplies last.

Pres. Bill Clinton’s fifth annual Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) meeting in Washington, D.C. Anthony Armstrong, Joshua Morgan, and former Redskins receiver Donte’ Stallworth are expected to be in attendance.  The events brings together more than 1,000 students, representing all 50 states, more than 75 countries, and approximately 300 college and universities, along with leaders in business, nonprofit, government and celebrities engaged in efforts to create positive change.

In other news, a slow week at Redskins Park means that it was a busy week for players with their families.  Here are a few of the pictures that players shared of their families on Twitter: Read more »

Jenkins Eyeing His Date Of Full Recovery

Posted by Brian Tinsman on March 1, 2012 – 4:24 pm

As I stepped out to go to lunch earlier this afternoon, I was greeted in the lobby by the familiar smiling face of defensive end Jarvis Jenkins.

Jenkins recently observed the six-month anniversary (Aug. 25) of his ACL tear against the Baltimore Ravens, which ended his rookie season prematurely.  But before that–and even after that–he has been called one of the top offseason additions of the Shanahan era, and looked to have the makings of a dominant defensive end.

That impression was forged from the first moment of contact with the Washington-metropolitan area, in his draft day telephone press conference.

“I’m the kind of guy that does dirty work,” he told the media, matter-of-factly.  ”I don’t care what they make me do.  If they want me to get on two knees and just sit there, I will do it.  I’m all about winning games.” Read more »

Rookies Share ‘Welcome To NFL’ Moments

Posted by Brian Tinsman on February 24, 2012 – 2:25 pm

The Redskins brain-trust drafted a group of a dozen players that they hoped would lay the foundation for future success.

Some players like Ryan Kerrigan, Jarvis Jenkins and Leonard Hankerson were expected to be impact players in their rookie seasons, but when do things go according to plan in a contact sport?

Jenkins was lost to a season-ending injury in the preseason, delaying his rise to stardom.  Hankerson was lost after his breakout game against Miami in Week 10.  They were joined by a whole host of players in injured reserve, which opened up playing time and opportunity for late-round draft picks to perform.

Each of the remaining 11 players were active for at least one game during the season, making it one of the most impressive showings for a rookie draft class in franchise history.

Now, CSNWashington’s Jennifer Williams takes a look back at what the Ryan Kerrigan, Roy Helu and Niles Paul would call their top memories of Season 1 in Washington: Read more »

Happy Valentine’s Day From The Redskins

Posted by Brian Tinsman on February 14, 2012 – 10:40 am

via the Redskins Team Store

Good morning Redskins Nation, and welcome to one of the biggest corporate holidays most romantic days of the year: Happy Valentine’s Day!

In a month tragically devoid of Redskins football, it’s a good opportunity to pay attention to the spouse that you neglected during football season–husband or wife.  Even though Americans are expected to spend $17.6 billion this Feb. 14 ($126.03 per person), just remember that your time and effort are most important.

And shiny things that fit on fingers, wrists and necks never hurt.

Here are a few Valentine’s-themed tweets and love-life advice from Redskins players with the most “heart”: Read more »

Carriker: Jenkins, Happiest Rookie Ever

Posted by Brian Tinsman on January 20, 2012 – 12:30 pm

Redskins defensive end Adam Carriker recently appeared on the ESPN 980 Sports Fix with Kevin Sheehan and Thom Leverro to discuss his season in review.

After discussing his own impending free agent status, he also talked about rookie prospect Jarvis Jenkins, who looked to be on the fast track to playing time before injury.  As with any measure of success, it’s one thing to hear it from outsiders–but it’s another thing to turn heads among your peers.

According to Carriker, Jenkins’s enthusiastic mindset set him apart from any other rookie he’d ever seen: Read more »
