Shanahan Runs In Practice Bubble Daily

Posted by Brian Tinsman on March 1, 2012 – 11:53 am

The Redskins are still months away from their first opportunity to practice in the shiny new indoor practice facility, but the bubble has already been witness to physical activity.

Part of head coach Mike Shanahan’s daily health regimen is going for a run.  He can sometimes be seen running down the Loudoun County Parkway, or on the fields and trails that surround Redskins Park.  He’s even given marathon advice to CSN Washington’s Ivan Carter.

But since the inflation of the new bubble on the premises, Shanahan told Redskins Nation’s Larry Michael that he has adapted his training routine to check out the indoor facility (at the 2:00 mark): Read more »

New Practice Bubble Turf Surface In Place

Posted by Brian Tinsman on February 10, 2012 – 2:01 pm

Only three weeks ago, Redskins fans saw the long-awaited rise of the new indoor practice bubble at Redskins Park.

In the time since then, the bubble has been rigged with lighting and a brand new field turf surface has been rolled out inside.

All-in-all, it’s starting to finally look like a facility that will host NFL-quality practices.  Here’s Redskins Nation’s Larry Michael with an exclusive sneak peek inside the brand new facility (via CSNWashington): Read more »

Kicker Loving The New Practice Bubble

Posted by Brian Tinsman on January 24, 2012 – 6:34 pm

The ending of last weekend’s AFC Championship game reminded everyone in the NFL that there is no such thing as an automatic kick, and that things can go awry from the moment coaches call for a field goal, until the ball hits the back net.

Plain and simple, kicking is a lot harder than it looks.

Part of preparing for tough kicking conditions is practicing repetitions in lousy weather conditions.  But another part of preparing to do a precision task is to prepare in perfect conditions–the type made possible with a practice bubble.

Count Redskins kicker Graham Gano as a big fan of the new indoor practice bubble at Redskins Park.  He tweeted his appreciation for the all-weather bubble a short time ago: Read more »

Practice Bubble Time Lapse Video

Late Friday afternoon, we announced right here on Redskins.com that the Redskins practice bubble was finally off the ground.  As of closing time at Redskins Park, she wasn’t quite off the ground.  As of sundown, she was still rising.  When the snow began, she was standing tall, and by morning the bubble had risen to a proud 96 feet.

The bubble now dominates the skyline in Loudoun County, and can be spotted from the Loudoun County Parkway and Rt. 7.  Once the blanket of fog lifts out of the DMV, we’ll see how far away it can really be seen.  Check out Redskins Nation’s Larry Michael with the Friday report and cool time lapse inflation:

There will be more to come on the specifics of the dimensions and features in the days and weeks to come, as they finish the inside and put down the playing surface.  For now, it’s a mammoth endeavor that’s finally reaching fruition.

Here’s a quick panoramic shot of the inside of the bubble.  The white noise you hear are the powerful, yet energy-efficient fans that keep the bubble inflated:

Practice Bubble Inflating At Redskins Park

Posted by Brian Tinsman on January 20, 2012 – 4:39 pm

The long-awaited rise of the Redskins practice bubble has begun at Redskins Park this afternoon.  As the sun goes down behind the clouds, the bubble is about one-third of the way full and getting bigger by the minute.

The photos above were taken at around 4:25 p.m., and the video update below was shot at around 2 p.m. when the inflation began.  This is the first indoor practice facility for the Redskins in franchise history, and should allow the team a safe and accommodating place to practice, no matter what the weather.

Redskins Practice Bubble Update: Tuesday

Posted by Brian Tinsman on January 17, 2012 – 3:42 pm

AP Image

Over an otherwise quiet holiday weekend at Redskins Park, visible progress was made on the much-anticipated Redskins practice bubble.

Between last Friday and today, the gray tarps have been removed, and the white canvas has been spread out and put in place over the foundation.  A crane has also been brought in along one of the sides of the foundation, presumably to do crane-type things.

I don’t have too much more insight than that at the moment, but despite the high winds and rain recently, progress continues to be made towards a fully-functional practice bubble.

For the latest round of photos, look below: Read more »

Friday Redskins Practice Bubble Update

Posted by Brian Tinsman on January 13, 2012 – 10:52 am

Good morning Redskins Nation, and a very careful Friday the 13th to all.  My informed superstitious advice is to steer clear of black cats today and wear your luckiest Redskins gear today in order to ward off evil spirits.

And if anyone dares to utter “Dallas Cowboys” on this unluckiest of days, sing “Hail to the Redskins” to protect yourself.

In other news, the Redskins practice bubble is finally percolating towards completion.  All of the rain and nasty weather this fall made progress slow, but the foundation is in place, the doors are in place, and the bubble is in the not-too-distant future.

The 25-30 mph winds in Ashburn today look to be an inhibitor, but with the season over, crews can take their time.

Here’s Redskins Nation’s Larry Michael to outline the progress from yesterday: Read more »
