Hail! Throwback And Vince Lombardi

Posted by Matt Terl on July 22, 2011 – 9:01 am

I believe that after today’s strip, Hail! writer/artist Ben Ceccarelli will just be a Jack Pardee and a Norv Turner away from having cartoonified every Redskins head coach since Lombardi.  (NOTE: Not really.)

Also, the more observant among you might notice that things look a little different around these parts.  We’ve switched platforms (again), for a whole variety of reasons — now we’re much more in line with the look & feel of the rest of  Redskins.com, for one thing — and we’re all sort of getting used to things.  The commenting system is different (although I believe it’s much smoother), and you’ll spot other changes throughout the blog.

We know about some existing issues, but if you spot any bugs, dead links, or other huge problems, please drop us a line and let us know.  Thanks, and enjoy the new-look site.

Hail! Remembers Osaka

Posted by Matt Terl on July 1, 2011 – 9:07 am

Earlier this week, I mentioned the infamous Osaka game – the one night, I called it, when Steve Spurrier’s offense really lived up to the hype. Well, there must be something Spurrier in the air, because Hail! writer/artist Ben Ceccarelli also elects to go back to those heady 45-pass-attempts-in-a-preseason-game days with today’s Hail.

Hail! Throwback Explores A Pat Fischer Legend

Posted by Matt Terl on May 27, 2011 – 8:15 am

Hail! writer/artist Ben Ceccarelli is back from his honeymoon, and his comic strip returns with him. Today, Ceccarelli takes a look at an old legend surrounding Pat Fischer, which — for background — I’ll explain by quoting Tarhog & TK-IV II I’s excellent Redskins History 101 from over on Extremeskins:

Pat Fischer was an anecdote-teller’s dream. He was rumored to be fond of chewing on a mouthful of ‘stick-um’ to relax before games. Supposedly finding it difficult to find well-fitting knee pads, Fischer would allegedly tape disposable diapers around his knees. It was also reportedly common for Fischer to send young fans in the stands after hot coffee to warm him during cold-weather games.

Apparently Fischer would’ve been a cartoonist’s dream as well. As always, click this first panel or the Read More link to see the rest of the strip.

Hail! Throwback And The Hogs

Posted by Matt Terl on May 13, 2011 – 9:38 am

Congratulations to Hail! writer/artist Ben Ceccarelli, who is getting married this weekend. We wish him and his bride all the best. To celebrate the occasion, Ceccarelli has gone for gross-out humor in this week’s strip; you can find the backstory over at the DC Sports Bog.

Hail! Throwback Hits 1985

Not much introduction needed for this one, as Hail!’s writer/artist Ben Ceccarelli continues to visit past eras in Redskins history. As always, click this first panel or the Read More link to see the rest.

Hail! Throwback Grinds It Out

Posted by Matt Terl on April 29, 2011 – 9:15 am

Sometimes I feel like writer/artist Ben Ceccarelli‘s comic strips require an introduction; sometimes I assume that the joke will make sense to any Redskins fan. This one falls somewhere in between — the incident referenced took place awhile back, but has been retold enough times to border on myth.

The trickiness is compounded because explaining the crucial reference blows the punchline, so the annotation comes after the strip this week. As always, click this first panel or the Read More link to see the rest of the strip.

Hail! Throwback Introduces Cartoon Joe Gibbs

Posted by Matt Terl on April 22, 2011 – 9:10 am

Not to get all Nerd Theory on you here, but there’s an idea that I first learned about from reading comics theorist Scott McCloud that’s relevant to today’s Hail! Throwback strip. The whole concept is a bit more complicated, but here’s the gist: good cartooning strips away irrelevant detail and exaggerates certain distinctive features to reach a form that can convey the same basic meaning as a lifelike depiction or photograph but in a much more iconic way. (You can read much more about this here if you’re interested.)

Ben Ceccarelli, the writer/artist who does these Hail! strips every week, excels at that process. The biggest thrill for me when a new strip comes in is seeing whom Ceccarelli has added to the Hail! universe, and how he’s chosen to depict them. What’s siginificant about this week — and what brought that old McCloud stuff to mind — is that he’s very clearly showing the Joe Gibbs of his earliest years (circa 1982, if I had to nail it down), and it’s those iconic details that make that fact so clear.

The shape of the glasses and hat, the sweater, even the facial expression … there’s no mistaking that for the 21st century incarnation of Gibbs. It’s very good work from Ceccarelli.

All of that aside, though, I’m really annoyed with myself that I didn’t guess the punchline much, much earlier. As always, click this first panel or the Read More link to see the rest of the strip.

Hail! Looks At A Soon-To-Be Hall Of Famer

Posted by Matt Terl on April 15, 2011 – 9:27 am

There are a lot of things I’m enjoying about these Hail! Throwbacks. First and foremost, I love seeing writer/artist Ben Ceccarelli’s renditions of Redskins greats. I’m also enjoying seeing Ceccarelli explore an entirely different area of the rich tradition of the Redskins. This week, I’m amused by the representation of Cartoon Me in the third panel, which is terrifyingly accurate.

But the main thing I’m digging about this week’s strip has nothing to do with Ben’s work at all: I’m just enjoying the reminder that, yes, Chris Hanburger has finally been elected to the Hall Of Fame.

Hail! Goes Throwback To The Sonny/Billy Days

Posted by Matt Terl on April 8, 2011 – 9:35 am

Today, writer/artist Ben Ceccarelli explores yet another part of the Redskins’ Days Of Future Past with Hail! Throwback: the now-legendary QB controversy between Sonny Jurgensen and Billy Kilmer. There are a few different references in this one that might be unfamiliar to some of our younger readers — not least the bumper sticker mention in the first panel — so let me point you at this article from Washingtonian magazine, which gives at least a cursory background to everything here.

One other thing I’ve learned from these Throwback episodes: Cartoon Me’s hairstyle is shockingly timeless. I mean, it fit in with Sammy Baugh in the 1930’s, it fits in with Sonny in the 1970’s … I mean, that look transcends fashion, really. My real hair … not so much.

Anyhow, as always, click this first panel or the Read More link to see the rest of the strip.

Hail! Flashback: 1966

Posted by Matt Terl on April 1, 2011 – 8:58 am

Charley Taylor was a very good running back. He was drafted as a running back. He won the NFC Rookie Of The Year Award as a running back. He went to the Pro Bowl two straight years as a running back. And then, halfway through his third year in the league, he became a split end — and turned out to be a Hall of Famer and one of the all-time greats at the position.

Most people attribute that switch to head coach Otto Graham, but writer/artist Ben Ceccarelli — as usual — has some different ideas. And in this week’s Hail! Flashback comic strip, Ceccarelli takes us back to the week that switch was made to see what he believes was actually going on. So set your time-travelling phone booths for 1966, and click this first panel or the Read More link to see the rest of the strip.
