Leonard Hankerson Gets Some More Redskins Gear

Posted by Matt Terl on May 23, 2011 – 8:56 am

Almost from the moment he was drafted in the third round, wide receiver Leonard Hankerson has been tweeting pictures of himself in Redskins gear. It was a cool story, interesting enough that I talked to the longtime friend who provided Hankerson with the burgundy and gold accoutrements, but apparently a few twitpics of himself wearing borrowed clothes wasn’t enough for Hankerson: late Sunday, the former Miami wide receiver tweeted a picture of himself in a pretty authentic-looking Redskins uniform.

Before I re-post Hankerson’s picture, let me make it very clear that no uniform numbers have yet been issued; as far as I know, Mike Furrey is still on the roster and is still the person who would officially be wearing 85. [UPDATE: Furrey is apparently no longer on the roster; according to his website, he’s the head coach at Kentucky Christian University. Still, no numbers have been issued to draft picks that I know of, so that point remains accurate.] THIS IS NOT OFFICIAL IN ANY WAY. That said, it still looks pretty freakin’ cool.

Based on the background signage, it looks like this shot comes from a photo shoot for a Topps football card — presumably something to do with the one from the company’s high-end “Inception” line that Hankerson tweeted on Wednesday. Here, look: Read more »

Larry Johnson's Original Plan For Success

Posted by Matt Terl on June 1, 2010 – 10:06 am

It’s been pretty well-documented that new Redskins running back Larry Johnson grew up a Redskins fan in the D.C. area in the 1980s. This means that if he wanted to root for a Major League Baseball team, his options were basically the Baltimore Orioles or nothing. And, like many of us, he elected to root for the Orioles.

So when I heard that he had gone to an Orioles/Nats game and seen Josh Willingham hit a 10th inning walk-off home run, I wondered if he was still rooting for the squad of his childhood, or if Johnson — also like many of us — had transferred his affections over to the new guys closer to home.

“Nah,” he said, “I don’t bandwagon like that. I remember when they were the Senators, though, way back in the day.”

I know that Johnson is a student of sports history, but remembering a baseball team that ceased to exist eight years before he was even born seemed … unlikely, to say the least.

Got Some Time To Kill?

Posted by Matt Terl on May 14, 2009 – 3:56 pm

Hey, it’s Thursday afternoon. The end of the day is just out of reach, and you’re thinking to yourself, “If only there was a website where I could burn somewhere between twenty minutes and twelve years looking at things like the Swedish translation of Sonny Jurgensen’s 1979 Sportscaster oversized football cards!”

Well, good news for you, lousy news for that spreadsheet you’re supposed to be working on.

The Redskins Card Museum is the culmination of one man’s borderline lunatic aim of collecting just about every Redskins football card known to man. Nothing for sale, no ads — as promised in the site owner’s email to me — just a whole lot of Redskins history.

I’ve put a few choice samples after the jump — Billy Kilmer in a bizarre hat on his 1977 Topps card! — but it’s really the kind of site where you’re best served browsing around after your own interests. If you’re thorough, this could well carry you through all of Friday as well. Read more »
