Cooley as handyman and artist

Posted by Ross Hollebon on May 17, 2014 – 6:27 pm

Screen Shot 2014-05-17 at 6.05.23 PMChris Cooley, former Washington Redskins tight end and current radio analyst, was keeping busy inside Redskins Park on Saturday as rookies were outside for the second mini-camp practice of the day.

As LB Trent Murphy, OL Morgan Moses, OL Spencer Long and the rest of draft class and undrafted rookies worked to get things in order and understand the Redskins way, Cooley was in the ESPN 980 Radio studio – tearing things apart.

He and two friends removed some studio foam tiles off a portion of the largest wall – space Cooley will use to paint a mural in the coming days – and began the process of sanding, patching, and priming the walls for the next Cooley creation.

Check out the video below to see some of the initial prep work done today and we’ll be sure to keep you up-to-date as the room is put back together and decorated as only Cooley can.

Charley Casserly Explains The Combine

Posted by Gabe Hiatt on February 27, 2014 – 11:42 am

NFL Network analyst and former Redskins general manager Charley Casserly does not put a ton of stock in the underwear Olympics.

Casserly told ESPN 980’s “The Sports Fix” he determined “80 to 90 percent” of his draft grades from the film room and generally dismisses workouts once he leaves an event.

The value in the NFL Scouting Combine and Pro Days is to “fine tune” nuances and test players for specific skills.

“What you do in a workout, whether it’s in Indy or a school, is really athletic ability, skills or technique work,” Casserly said Wednesday. Read more »

Young Repays Support With World Tour

Posted by Brian Tinsman on February 9, 2012 – 2:35 pm

Intensity.  Passion.  Commitment.

These are a few of the qualities that push Redskins fullback Darrel Young to new heights on the football field.  Indeed, these are things that every athlete needs in order to make it in pro sports, although every player draws it from a different place.

For Young, that source has always been in his brother David, a sergeant first class in the US Army.  David has been deployed in the Middle East for much of Darrel’s career, but remains close with his brother, providing him with guidance and support, even from a world away.

In an effort to repay the favor, Darrel has teamed up with the Bills’ Drayton Florence and the Buccaneers’ James Lee as part of the “NFL Players Super Bowl Tour.”  Since departing the United States on Feb. 1, the trio has visited troops stationed in Greenland, El Salvador and Honduras.

According to Young’s personal blog, this is an honor for him, and a debt that he needs to repay to his brother: Read more »

Carriker: Jenkins, Happiest Rookie Ever

Posted by Brian Tinsman on January 20, 2012 – 12:30 pm

Redskins defensive end Adam Carriker recently appeared on the ESPN 980 Sports Fix with Kevin Sheehan and Thom Leverro to discuss his season in review.

After discussing his own impending free agent status, he also talked about rookie prospect Jarvis Jenkins, who looked to be on the fast track to playing time before injury.  As with any measure of success, it’s one thing to hear it from outsiders–but it’s another thing to turn heads among your peers.

According to Carriker, Jenkins’s enthusiastic mindset set him apart from any other rookie he’d ever seen: Read more »

Wilson On Seattle, Seattle On Wilson

Wilson on Seattle:

Although his off-season signing with Washington brought him home, Redskins cornerback Josh Wilson returns to his ‘home away from home’ in Seattle this weekend.

Wilson, a second round draft pick to the Seahawks in 2007, sat down with “The John Thompson Show” on ESPN 980 to discuss his time in Seattle.  The first thing he discussed was the absurd volume of the fabled 12th man at Qwest Field/CenturyLink Field:

“It definitely gets you going,” Wilson said.  “As a defensive player, that’s when we got the bulk of [the noise].  It was almost just as tough as a defensive player to be able to communicate as it was for the offense.  But there’s nothing like making a big play as a defensive player there, because you’re gonna hear a stadium roar.”

The same can be said for special occasions on offense.  Last year in the playoffs, when the Seahawks (7-9) hosted the Saints (11-5) at Qwest Field, the Seahawks managed one of the greatest upsets in NFL playoffs history.  The memorable play from that game was a 67-yard touchdown run by Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch: Read more »

Lorenzo Isn’t Buying What Devin Is Selling

Posted by Brian Tinsman on September 10, 2011 – 4:30 pm

Former Redskins wide receiver, current Giants returner Devin Thomas has been quite the media-darling recently.

And no, I’m not talking about another ‘bittersweet’ music video for Fantasia.

First he referred to his former team as “the Deadskins.”  Creative.

Next he appeared on ESPN 980, and assured the hosts that he would be smiling after the game, “after he put a spanking on y’all.”  Pretty big words for the kick return specialist and fourth-string wide receiver.

But don’t expect the Redskins to get into a war of words, or give Thomas any bulletin board material.  Special teams ace Lorenzo Alexander just doesn’t buy it.

“That’s just Devin talking,” he said.  “That’s the type of guy he is: he’s a receiver, y’know flashy, a prima donna type. I expect that but I don’t take it personal at all. I think it just makes it funner to go out there and lay wood to him and talk trash to him on the field.”

Delivering a crushing tackle on special teams has a way of increasing the likelihood of having the last laugh.

Alexander said he also understood where Thomas was coming from, and didn’t take it too personally. Read more »

Posted by Brian Tinsman on September 7, 2011 – 1:10 pm
