First Ever Chants Of ‘R-G-3′ At FedExField

Posted by Brian Tinsman on April 27, 2012 – 11:01 am

As the clock ticked down to 8 p.m. last night, Redskins Nation swelled with pride, as fans around the world huddled around their television sets and waited for the good word.

The team hosted its first ever Draft Day Viewing Party at FedExField.  Sponsored and impromptu Redskins Rallies cropped up all over the district, and at various bars across the country.  Fans on Twitter posted from as far away as Europe and Asia, foregoing sleep to watch the pick live.  At Radio City Music Hall, the overwhelmingly Redskins crowd booed Andrew Luck and the Colts, chanting ‘R-G-3!’ until long after he left the stage.  Into the wee hours of the morning, all anyone could talk about was the career trajectories of the first and second overall picks.

And last night was just the beginning.

The fan reaction was the perfect storm for years of frustration combined with insatiable pride.  It was a move that was three years in the making, of roster building and preparation to find that franchise guy.  Last night was only the first step, but today will be largely devoted to the celebration by the fans, for the fans.

The first stop we make is at FedExField, the new home field for Robert Griffin III, and the new-look Redskins.  Fans mobbed the Club Level of the stadium, and roared with the announcement by Roger Goodell.  For the first of hopefully many times, the crowd broke out in a spontaneous chant of ‘R-G-3!’ holding up three fingers: Read more »

Dual Purpose: Draft Day Flashback and Cheerleader Finals

Posted by Matt Terl on April 1, 2011 – 5:02 pm

The 2011 Draft Day Party is on April 30, less than a month away, and it’s a good time every year. As this year’s event approaches, I’ll be looking back at Draft Day Parties past; meanwhile, you should go print your party pass and start making plans to hit this year’s event.

This picture serves two purposes: one is because the Draft Day Party marks the first official performance of the Redskins Cheerleaders; this is the 2010 squad. And the other is to remind you that the cheerleader finals will be held this Sunday in Falls Church, Virginia — an event that’s open to the public.

Draft Day Party Flashback: Trent Williams Meets The Fans

Posted by Matt Terl on March 31, 2011 – 9:42 am

The 2011 Draft Day Party is on April 30, less than a month away, and it’s a good time every year. As this year’s event approaches, I’ll be looking back at Draft Day Parties past; meanwhile, you should go print your party pass and start making plans to hit this year’s event.

First up, a scene from last year’s event as newly-drated offensive lineman Trent Williams gets his first look at Redskins fans.

When new offensive tackle Trent Williams took the stage at today’s Draft Day Party at FedExField, it was the first time he had seen a large gathering of Redskins fans, but not the first time he’d heard about them. His good friend (and fellow Redskin) Malcolm Kelly saw to that. “You know, Malcolm told me a lot about the fans,” Williams told me. “He told me they was crazy about their football, and that — coming from Oklahoma — it was the same type of treatment. That was really important to me, comin’ to an NFL team.”And Redskins fans lived up the advance billing:

“I knew college fans were really die-hard, but I didn’t really expect that from NFL fans. I really expect we’ve got the best fans in the nation.”

Later, Williams was asked what the fans can expect from his tenure with the Redskins, and he answered with absolute conviction:

“Super Bowl appearances”It was, he told me after his appearance, something that he extrapolated from what Orakpo had told him before they took the stage. “He just told me that they got a great culture here, made some great offseason moves, and that we’re in the position we wanna be in. He said that if I come in with that chip on my shoulder ready to play, the sky’s the limit.”

At that point, though, Williams hadn’t so much as put on a Redskins jersey. So for a brief while, his best moment as part of the Redskins was meeting the fans at the Draft Day Party. “The ovation I got when I walked onstage,” he told me at the time. “Everyone was already standing, but the ovation was amazing.”

I’ve gotten more than few inquiries about this, so here’s the answer: yes, there will be a draft day party this year, on Saturday, April 30, at FedExField. It’s always a good time, and this year promises to be no different — Redskins alumni, Coach Mike Shanahan at 5:30(ish), and more. The 2010 Redskins Cheerleaders Make Their Debut

Posted by Matt Terl on May 6, 2010 – 12:49 pm

One thing I haven’t gotten around to mentioning from the Draft Day Party at FedExField was the official debut of the 2010 Washington Redskins Cheerleaders. This was the first time the newest cheerleaders would be performing with the squad, so I caught up with Marisa, the former Redskins Ambassador I wrote about at the final cheerleader auditions, to see how it felt to her debut with the squad.

“It took a while to sink in,” she said, “but now that we’re in the uniforms and performing for people and seeing the fans, it feels a little more real. As rookies, we’re still learning a lot, but it’s so much fun.”

She says the veterans haven’t gotten into any serious hazing yet, but she’s expecting at least a bit. “They did pull a few jokes today,” she acknowledged, “just keeping us on our toes.”

I had been impressed with the amount of work that went into audition prep, but the onstage debut means that the workload has, if anything, increased.

“We had about two to three practices a week leading up to this, and we learned the famous initiation rock routine, which was a lot of work but also a lot of fun.”

After the Draft Day Party, the squad’s attention turns to the photo shoot for the annual calendar. “I’m very excited for that,” Marisa said. “It’s a great opportunity and a lot of fun to bond, and also a chance to produce a great calendar.”

First time in uniform also means first time in front of the assembled Redskins fans, which Marisa was also excited about. “The fans are a lot of fun,” she said. “I got to meet a lot of them when I was with the Ambassadors, but just to see them all in one place out here was really something. It’s all been just great. With all the new things happening, we’re just excited for the new season.”

Posted by Matt Terl on April 24, 2010 – 5:48 pm

Here’s how head coach Mike Shanahan views this year’s Redskins draft, as he described it to the assembled crowd at FedExField this afternoon. No interjections from me, just the head coach’s assessment of what the team accomplished today, after the jump.

Trent Williams Gets His Moment At The Draft Day Party

Reminder: Redskins Draft Day Party Is TODAY

Posted by Matt Terl on April 24, 2010 – 9:00 am

Let me get the disclaimer out of the way up top here. As I wrote in my first post on this year’s Draft Day Party (although I’ve re-distributed the paragraph breaks for added emphasis):

Yes, it’s the third day of the draft.

Yes, thanks to the new scheduling, that’s rounds 4-7.

But the point of this event isn’t actually to settle down and quietly watch the drama of the draft unfold. What it is is a completely free way to spend a day with fellow Redskins fans at FedExField. There are generally some terrific tailgates going on in the parking lot, the activities are a legitimately good time, and, really? How often do you get to be on the field at the stadium.

And what I didn’t know when I wrote that is that it’s also your best chance to get a piece of the old JumboTron just for making a donation to charity.

UPDATE: You can get your lite brite pieces in three places:

1. On the field at section 141/142
2. At the HOF store
3. On the club level at section 335

(It also bears mentioning that the Redskins currently have three picks in rounds 4-7 as compared with none on Friday and one on Thursday. That’s subject to change, of course, but from a density-of-information standpoint having the party on Saturday makes the most sense.)

Gates open at 9:30 in the morning today — which means they’re OPEN — and parking and admission are free.

The team’s first-round draft choice in scheduled to arrive and address the crowd around noon, and head coach Mike Shanahan should be there at 5:00 in the evening. (All times weather and NFL Draft schedule permitting — and the weather is currently projected to be relatively cool and pleasant.)

But wait, as they used to say on TV, there’s MORE! Read more »

It’s on Saturday, April 24th. The stadium gates open at 10:00 a.m. and stay open until 6:00 p.m., and there will be plenty to do:

  • Head coach Mike Shanahan will address the fans (around 4:00 p.m., draft schedule pemitting)
  • The first-round pick will be introduced (at approximately noon)
  • Test your passing and kicking skills on the field

  • Get active at the Redskins Play 60 youth fitness stations
  • The 2010 Redskins Cheerleaders make their debut
  • Performance by the Redskins Marching Band

The Consensus In The Parking Lot at FedExField Is Clear

Posted by Matt Terl on April 25, 2009 – 1:21 pm

Walking around the parking lot of FedExField for the Draft Day Party, three things very quickly become clear:

1) It is hot out. Like, seriously hot. Like Training-Camp-in-August hot. So, like I said earlier, if you’re coming, dress appropriately, wear sunscreen, drink water. Really.

2) People are very enthusiastic. Cars started arriving for the ExtremeSkins tailgate at 5:30 this morning. The draft, you’ll remember, isn’t until 4:00 this afternoon. So these folks — who had been grilling and frying and drinking and just generally celebrating for just over SIX HOURS before the gates even officially opened — are really making the most of that one first-day pick today.

3) With that pick, they would very much like the team to select a defensive player. Preferably Brian Orakpo, out of Texas, as Huly and Blondie from ExtremeSkins are demonstrating in the picture at the top of this post, but someone on the defense. An offensive lineman, if available, runs a close second, but Orakpo is the name that most people are mentioning (and ocasionally mispronouncing).

When I ask what people want the Redskins to do in today’s draft, the resulting tumult of overtalking makes it impossible to get everyone’s names correct, but here’s a sampling of the responses as best I can decipher them from my recording:
