Tallahassee, Florida is the capital of the Sunshine State, the center of agricultural work in the panhandle, and now can also claim to have produced two Redskins draft picks in the same round.

Hailing from Florida State University, Chris Thompson and Brandon Jenkins were selected within eight picks of each other in the fifth round on Saturday.

While it isn’t a rarity for college teammates to find themselves making the journey together from their college dorm rooms to an NFL locker room (think DeJon Gomes, Roy Helu Jr., and Niles Paul from Nebraska for example), the Burgundy and Gold had never taken FSU teammates together in a single draft let alone in the same round.

As the two prepare to make the almost 900 mile trek from Florida’s capital to the Nation’s Capital, one man who calls both areas home extended a welcoming hand to the newest Washington Redskins:

More than 120 students from nearby Sterling Middle School got a chance hang out with their favorite Washington Redskins players and get in a good workout Tuesday.

The Redskins played host to an NFL Play 60 Mini-Combine at their Ashburn, Va., facility, and took advantage of their new indoor training facility by taking things inside as rains and heavy winds moved over the area.

The event was a team effort between the Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation, Commonwealth Orthopaedics, DePuy Mitek, Inc. and Safe Kids Worldwide.

The students were being trained with the help of nine Redskins players who were happy to participate on their day off Tuesday, including:

Evan Royster Explains Number Change

Posted by Andrew Walker on September 3, 2012 – 4:17 pm

Evan Royster said he felt like “a new man” Monday at practice, as the Redskins prepare to take on the New Orleans Saints in both team’s 2012 season opener.

Royster was practicing for the first time in uniform No. 22 Monday. He wore No. 35 for most of his rookie season in 2011 (he wore No. 25 for part of the preseason before switching to No. 35).

The No. 22 is nothing new to Royster. He wore that number when he became Penn State’s all-time leader in rushing yards.

But, all kidding aside, Royster said Monday the decision to change his number really had no significance. He said he jumped at the opportunity to wear No. 22 when its former occupant, cornerback Kevin Barnes, was traded to the Detroit Lions.

DeJon Gomes: Juggling Oranges, Football

Posted by Andrew Walker on August 2, 2012 – 9:07 am

Washington Redskins’ safety DeJon Gomes says he doesn’t really hear the crowds when he’s playing football, but he definitely heard the jeers from his teammates at this time last season.

Playing in his first professional training camp, Gomes decided to juggle three oranges in an effort to impress his veteran teammates in the annual rookie talent show.

It didn’t go over so well.

Redskins’ Huskers Celebrate 2012 Pro Day

Posted by Brian Tinsman on March 9, 2012 – 3:40 pm

It’s been a year ago, almost to the day, that three members of the Nebraska Cornhuskers solidified themselves on the Redskins’ Draft boards with their efforts at the school’s Pro Day.  A mere seven weeks later, Roy Helu, DeJon Gomes and Niles Paul were called with successive Redskins picks, quadrupling the Nebraska presence on the team (Adam Carriker).

Yesterday was the 2012 Pro Day in Lincoln, Neb., and although none of the Redskins’ players were in attendance, it was definitely on the minds and fingertips of the two that use Twitter.

Paul tweeted his best wishes to his former Big Red teammates, sending good vibes to the NFL-hopefuls:

And it worked.

Redskins Players Back To The Real World

Posted by Brian Tinsman on January 3, 2012 – 11:55 am

For the last four months, 10:50 a.m. on a weekday has been my cue to walk down the steps at Redskins Park to chat with players in open locker room.  There weren’t always a lot of players available at a time, but there was always someone.

Taking a peek into the locker room today, most lockers are cleared out and there are no players in sight.  The only thing missing is a tumbleweed rolling out of the adjacent equipment room.

While some players make their offseason homes in Loudoun County, many others have dispersed across the country, back to the lives they live off the record.  In their first 24 hours of offseason living, some of these players have had a blast, while others have gone about their un-glamorous business.

Here’s a Twitter recap of the first 24 hours. Read more »
