Tuesday, August 25: Alma Mater T-Shirts

Posted by Matt Terl on August 25, 2009 – 8:30 am

The Redskins Community Relations department had an entertaining photo shoot on Friday. Programs Manager Jordana Taylor contacted the schools of every player on the roster to get a school T-shirt, and each player was photographed in his school’s shirt as part of a pro-education campaign. The players were then allowed to either keep the shirt, or autograph it and donate it.

In most cases, this was straightforward enough. It’s not hard to get four University of Miami T-shirts, for example, or four from Maryland or a couple from Virginia Tech. As you’d probably expect, Hawaii was quick to provide a shirt for Colt Brennan. Missouri included a note for Chase Daniel, and many other schools were similarly forthcoming.

Other schools were a little tougher.

Special Teams Practice – Welcome Home Luncheon Update

Posted by Matt Terl on August 15, 2009 – 4:43 pm

This afternoon’s special teams practice was unremarkable (to say the least). The high point was Keith Eloi nearly managing to catch six balls off the JUGS machine at once, and who knows — if he had succeeded, it might’ve been worth writing about. As it stands, though, I’ll just note that special teams practice happened and everyone made it off the field healthy.

In other news, we’re coming up on the Welcome Home Luncheon, which I wrote about at length last year. It’s a good event, and tickets are still available.

Last year’s Welcome Home Luncheon was Malcolm Kelly‘s first, and he remembers being impressed by the crowd. “I remember how many people were there,” he said yesterday, “just die hard fans. People that get excited over the smallest stuff just to be in the same vicinity with the Washington Redskins. It’s really the fan base, more than anything. Those guys take a lot of pride in this team.”

Antwaan Randle El Talks Fitness

Posted by Matt Terl on April 30, 2009 – 3:46 pm

Once their photos and physicals were done, Antwaan Randle El and Renaldo Wynn headed out of Redskins Park to a Boys & Girls Club in Southeast D.C., where they’re going to unveil a Redskins Youth Fitness Zone and lead a group of preteens and teenagers in exercises to combat youth obesity.

I talked to Randle El about it briefly before they departed. Read more »

Friday, April 17: Clinton Portis Dances With Special Olympians

Posted by Matt Terl on April 17, 2009 – 12:55 pm

Clinton Portis yesterday participated in an NFL Players Association event, working out with Special Olympians on the football field at Catholic University. Since Clinton is Clinton, “working out” also includes “making fun of Ben Roethlisberger” and “working on touchdown dances with the kids”. And the video is much, much more entertaining because of it.

Great job by NBC-4 on the piece, and great job by Portis with the kids. Read more »

DeAngelo Hall And Fred Smoot Exercise, Talk, Talk About Exercise

Posted by Matt Terl on March 19, 2009 – 5:21 pm

If I were to tell you that a Redskins player had been chosen to speak at a press conference promoting a Congressional youth fitness initiative, you’d assume that it was a quick-witted, chatty, loquacious guy who could make a potentially dry subject at least mildly compelling.

In short, you’d probably assume that it was Fred Smoot, especially if I told you that the player in question was a cornerback.

And you’d be right, sort of.

Smoot was indeed on hand today at the west side of the Capitol building in Washington, D.C., along with players from the Baltimore Ravens, cheerleaders from both teams, Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank, and a whole host of governmental VIPs. And a Redskins cornerback did indeed step up to the podium … but it was the recently re-signed DeAngelo Hall who did the talking, not Smoot.

“Everybody always has to listen to me talk,” Smoot joked beforehand. “I thought it was time to let [Hall] have a chance.” Read more »

Hogettes With Pins

Posted by Matt Terl on December 17, 2008 – 10:40 am

Have you ever wondered what the Hogettes keep in their purses? Neither had I.

In fact, I had never even thought about it, naively assuming that their purses were little more than props to help emphasize their femininity. At yesterday’s Toys For Tots event, I found out that I was sorely mistaken.

“This is my pin collection,” said Hogette Howiette (who had shown me his custom Hogette shoes and socks at a previous event), holding up his button-encrusted bag. “These over here” – he indicated the right side of the above picture – “are military, where these are police and law enforcement. I trade for them.” Read more »

Redskins Give Out Toys, Wear Seasonal Hats

Posted by Matt Terl on December 16, 2008 – 3:23 pm

Despite the down mood around Redskins Park after Sunday’s catastrophic loss – and make no mistake, the mood is just as down as you’d want it to be after that – and despite the fact that it’s Tuesday, a day off, there are still commitments for players to uphold.

For some players, that meant media. Jason Campbell, for example, made his usual radio appearance on ESPN980’s The Locker Room with Doc Walker and Kevin Sheehan, but was so subdued that Sheehan felt the need to discuss it after the fact.

For other players, though, it meant community events, and today Lorenzo Alexander, Chad Rinehart, Matt Sinclair, and Isaiah Ross acted as Santa’s elves at FedExField during the Skins Santa Shoppe in the Redskins’ locker room. The Redskins Charitable Foundation joined forces with the U.S. Marine Corps Toys for Tots program to give toys to more than 1,000 area kids from more than 25 area schools and community groups.

(One important note, before I go on: the local Toys For Tots program still desperately needs more toys to provide to needy children in the community for Christmas. If you can spare a new, unwrapped toy, there are drop-off centers at all the Redskins stores, or you can find a drop-off location online. Or, the program coordinator at the event told me, they might even be able to pick it up from you. They’ll be collecting toys until Christmas, and I can tell you from my own observations today just how happy these toys make kids.)

Redskins Distribute Jackets

Posted by Matt Terl on December 9, 2008 – 8:20 pm

The reason I was in my car to hear Clinton Portis‘s pointed thoughts on Jim Zorn was because of Antwaan Randle El. Randle El, along with many of his teammates, and with the help of his El Foundation, the Redskins Charitable Foundation, and Dick’s Sporting Goods, spent today distributing winter coats to underserved children at two area schools – one in D.C., and one in Maryland.

“This is something that we started in Pittsburgh,” Randle El said. “It’s cold in Pittsburgh, and coats seemed like an important thing. I think this is the third one we’ve done here. I’ve been so blessed by God, and I try to do what I can to be a blessing.”
