A review of the Nov. 4 Washington Redskins-Carolina Panthers game by the league and Elias Sports Bureau has parlayed into a blocked field goal for Washington Redskins cornerback DeAngelo Hall.

The play was originally labeled simply as a missed field goal by Panthers kicker Justin Medlock.

It came at the 4:27 mark of the fourth quarter of the 21-13 Redskins loss. On 4th and 8 from the Washington 32-yard line, Medlock attempted a 50-yard attempt, but it appeared to be well short.

Turns out Hall was able to get a hand on the ball and force the miss, Elias determined. Nonetheless, it was Medlock’s first miss of the season in eight tries to that point in the season. He also missed his only attempt — a 43-yarder — last Sunday against the Denver Broncos, a game the Panthers lost 36-14.

Hall for the season has 58 tackles, two interceptions and a sack heading into Sunday afternoon’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles at FedExField.

The Washington Redskins could’ve went into the Bye Week with a little momentum with a win against a Carolina Panthers team that had just one win entering today’s game.

Instead, it was the Panthers who played like the superior team at FedExField, as they defeated the Redskins 21-13 in front of 79,767 fans at FedExField.

The Panthers’ first drive of the fourth quarter was a microcosm of the Redskins’ problems thus far.

On the first play, Panthers quarterback Cam Newton found wide receiver Armanti Edwards wide open for an 82-yard reception to the Washington 9-yard line. Two plays later, cornerback Josh Wilson was flagged for pass interference in the end zone on receiver Steve Smith, setting the ball at the Washington 1-yard line. Newton did it all from there, running into the end zone for the touchdown, and blew a kiss to the Redskins fans in the process.

The deficiencies in the Redskins’ secondary have been well-documented, so there’s no need to harp on that at this point. But I’d imagine that area will definitely be a point of emphasis for the Redskins’ coaching staff during the Bye Week, which officially begins Tuesday afternoon after a day of practice.

But what’s the solution here? It’s not like there’s starting cornerbacks and safeties just sitting out there on the free-agent market. The trade deadline also came and went with no deals, so it looks like the team will likely have to forge on and rally with what they’ve got for the remainder of the season.

The Redskins defensive front also struggled to get much of a pass rush the entire game. It’s no secret: Newton only struggles when a defense can rattle his cage a little bit and get in his head. That didn’t happen today.

Perhaps the more concerning aspect about today’s game was it was the Redskins’ second straight week with inconsistencies on offense. The Panthers did a great job in their pass rush and kept Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III on his toes for most of the game, and though rookie running back Alfred Morris was able to turn in a quality performance, it was the big play that evaded him.

Another point of concern for the Redskins today? Penalties. They had two key defensive pass interference calls on Wilson, a holding call on left tackle Trent Williams that killed their first drive of the game, a holding call on center Will Montgomery erased a touchdown run by Griffin III and an illegal formation call took away another touchdown on that same drive. The Redskins entered the game as the third-most penalized team in the league, and that trend definitely continued today with 13 of them.

Maybe the best remedy to these struggles for the Redskins will be a few days away. We’ve all seen this team play very well — among the best in the league offensively — so it’s not like that can’t re-appear for Washington.

With all but one of the Redskins’ NFC East games remaining, there’s still plenty to play for this season.

The Washington Redskins received the kickoff to begin the second half of today’s game against the Carolina Panthers.

They found success early in their drive by running the ball with Alfred Morris, but on a 2nd and 10 play, Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III appeared to have found tight end Logan Paulsen for a diving catch and a first down. Carolina challenged the catch, and after review, the referees ruled the ball had hit the ground in the process of Paulsen’s catch. On 3rd and 10, Griffin III was sacked for a loss of seven yards, setting up a 49-yard punt by Sav Rocca that set up the Panthers at their own 17-yard line.

The Panthers faced a 3rd and 4 from their 23 when quarterback Cam Newton’s pass to tight end Greg Olsen was dropped. With the score at 14-3 and the Redskins’ offense struggling to move the ball consistently to this point, it was key for the Washington defense to force a three-and-out.

The Redskins’ ensuing drive began with a 25-yard pass to receiver Leonard Hankerson — his first catch of the game. The next play was a nine-yard rush by Griffin III, who slid to safety before being hit. They converted the first down on the next play, when Griffin III took an option keeper, but pitched with two hands to receiver Joshua Morgan a nine-yard gain. The drive continued into Panthers’ territory when Griffin III dropped back to pass, but was flushed out of the pocket and took off for a six-yard gain.

After an illegal block call on tight end Chris Cooley, Griffin III found tight end Niles Paul for a 22-yard pass-and-catch — a throw that went through a very tight window. Paul showed off some nice hands on the play, too.

Two plays later, the Redskins faced a 3rd and 6 from the Carolina 11-yard line when Griffin III, lined up in the shotgun, handed off to wide receiver Brandon Banks for a 3-yard gain. The Redskins — who were unsuccessful in a 4th and Goal from the 1-yard line earlier in the game — elected to kick this time around, and kicker Kai Forbath was successful from 25-yards out — his eighth-consecutive field goal since joining the team. The 10-play, 69-yard drive cut the Panthers’ lead to 14-6.

The Panthers took the field for their second drive of the half at their own 25-yard line. After a facemask penalty on the Panthers on their first play — an incomplete pass — running back Jonathan Stewart pulled off a 21-yard run to his left. The Redskins then stuffed the Panthers again on a 3rd-down attempt with one yard to go, forcing another punt.

Washington began its next drive at its own 40-yard line. They were flagged for holding on their first play — a run by Morris — before Griffin III found Hankerson for a 17-yard gain. Griffin III then drew the defense offsides on the next play, giving them a first down.

The Redskins are driving as the third quarter ends here with the Panthers leading 14-6.

CHIME IN: What are you thoughts of the third quarter of action today? Nice to see the defense step up? Feel free to chime in below.

The second quarter of today’s game between the Washington Redskins and the Carolina Panthers began with the Redskins in the midst of their second drive of the game and trailing 7-3.

They found success running the ball in that drive — as they have the entire season. Running back Alfred Morris ripped off runs of four, nine and 12 yards to begin the quarter to get the ball to the Washington 40. On the next play, receiver Joshua Morgan was ruled defenseless as Carolina Panthers safety Haruki Nakamura broke up a Robert Griffin III pass, putting the ball in Panthers’ territory. It was the second personal foul called on the Panthers this game.

Two plays later, the Redskins faced a 3rd and 5, but they were called for a false start — their second of the drive. On 3rd and 10 from the Carolina 45, Griffin III ran for seven yards to the Carolina 38-yard line, but they elected to go for it on 4th and 3.

Griffin III, lined up in the shotgun, found Morgan for six yards to convert the fourth-down conversion, making the Redskins 8-of-9 on fourth downs this season.

Morgan made an acrobatic 13-yard catch on the next play, putting the ball at the Carolina 19-yard line. Two plays later, they faced a 3rd and 8 from the 17-yard line when Griffin III found running back Evan Royster for a seven-yard gain, setting up 4th and inches. The Redskins elected to go for it again, and fullback Darrel Young converted with a three-yard run. Morris got to the 2-yard line with a hard, five-yard run; but two plays later, Griffin III passed to receiver Brandon Banks on a screen play, who got the ball to the 1-yard line.

Going for it on 4th down one more time were the Redskins — this time they weren’t able to convert and score, however. Griffin III took the ball and was tackled for a loss of one, turning over the ball on downs just six feet from the end zone. It’s hard to leave points out there like that, but the Redskins are very confident with the ball in Griffin III’s hands in any down and distance.

The two-minute warning came as the Panthers faced a 3rd and 6 from their own 25-yard line. Quarterback Cam Newton found tight end Greg Olsen for the first down with a 17-yard pass-and-catch to convert, and on the next play, squeezed out of a sack by pitching to running back Jonathan Stewart for a six-yard gain. On the next play, Newton skipped his pass attempt, but middle linebacker London Fletcher was called for touching Newton’s helmet after the pass. Newton found Olsen for eight yards and the first down from the Washington 26 on the next play.

To make things worse, cornerback Josh Wilson was flagged for pass interference on the next play, putting the ball at the 19. Carolina faced yet another third down two plays later when Newton found Steve Smith for a 19-yard touchdown pass which, after the extra point, extended their lead to 14-3 with 57 seconds remaining in the half.

The penalties are absolutely killing the Redskins today. They’ve got to clean those up, or this will be a long second half.

The Homecoming festivities today on the Washington Redskins’ 80th Anniversary could merit its own special day of events and appearances.

But the Washington Redskins like to do things big, so fans were treated to the ceremonies prior to today’s game against the Carolina Panthers.

But on to the game.

The Panthers received the opening kickoff , which was downed in the FedExField end zone. On their very first play, Panthers quarterback Cam Newton found tight end Gary Barnidge for 13-yards and a first down, as their initial drive got off to a quick start.

But that drive ended seven plays later when the Panthers, who faced a 3rd and 8 from the Washington 37-yard line, were unable to convert on a bounced throw from Newton to tight end Greg Olsen.

The Redskins began their initial drive at their own 3-yard line after a great punt by Brad Nortman.

The drive didn’t look promising, however, as Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III missed on his first two passes and then found wide receiver Joshua Morgan for about five yards. But a roughing the passer penalty on Griffin III on defensive end Greg Hardy gave the Redskins 15 yards and a first down at their 23-yard line.

Two Alfred Morris runs later, and the Redskins faced another 3rd down, this time with six yards to go. Griffin III, from the shotgun, found Morgan on a slant route, who made a sliding catch in traffic and hung on to the ball for a 16-yard completion to their 43-yard line. The Redskins receivers dropped at least 10 passes last week against the Pittsburgh Steelers, so you know they have something to prove this week.

On the next play, Morris rumbled ahead for a 16-yard gain, and then Griffin III rolled out and found tight end Logan Paulsen on an out route for 12 yards to the Carolina 29-yard line.

Griffin III took off on the next play for an eight-yard rush on the Redskins read-option; but on the next play, left tackle Trent Williams was flagged for holding, putting the ball on the 31. Two plays later, the Redskins faced a 3rd and 12 from the 31 when Griffin III passed to wide receiver Santana Moss on a screen pass that got two yards. Kicker Kai Forbath — who entered the game a perfect 6-for-6 on field-goal attempts this season — continued the streak with a 47-yard field goal, giving the Redskins an early 3-0 lead with 4:26 remaining in the quarter.

It was a 12-play, 68-yard drive that took 6:45 off the clock. The holding call really killed the momentum for the Redskins, who were getting first downs left and right prior to that play. But the scoring drive wouldn’t have even been possible without the personal foul on Hardy with the Redskins on their own 3-yard line, so each team gets an early break.

The Panthers began their second drive from their 31-yard line. Two plays later, they faced a 3rd and 1 from their 40 when a Newton keeper netted three yards and a first down. Newton, by the way, is huge — especially in his football pads. Four plays later, Carolina running back DeAngelo Williams turned the corner and ran 30 yards for a touchdown with 24 seconds left in the quarter, giving the Panthers a 7-3 lead after the extra point.

It was a seven-play, 69-yard drive; 60 of which were gained on the ground. These Panthers can gain huge chunks of yardage at a time

You can bet that the Washington Redskins will stop at nothing to get a win tomorrow against the Carolina Panthers on Homecoming Weekend at FedExField.

But you Redskins fans also have the opportunity to show your dominance over the Panthers fans this weekend.

The two teams are taking part in a “Social Showdown,” which gives the fanbases the opportunity to tweet or post Instagram photos to show their team pride.

Here’s how to get involved:

- Log in to your Facebook, Twitter and Instragram accounts. Make sure you “like” the Redskins on Facebook and follow them on Twitter and Instragram.

- Then there’s two ways to ensure we come out on top against the Panthers in our Social Showdown:

- Click here for our “Tug of War” Facebook page and simply click “Tweet HTTR.” That should help you send out a Tweet with the message “Join the @Redskins virtual wave. Beat the Panthers! http://redsk.in/RyYMa0 #HTTR”

- You can also participate simply by using the hashtag #HTTR in your Tweets and Instagram photos. It’s a perfect, short and sweet ending to all the messages and photos we know you’ll already sending out this weekend.

—————————-

Be sure to follow the Redskins everywhere you go:
