Hall Of Famers Reflect On Time Together

Posted by Stephen Czarda on March 7, 2013 – 2:47 pm

Chris Hanburger, Roger Staubach

Over the last several seasons, Redskins fans have been treated to some splendid play by one of, if not the, best linebacking core in the league.

With perennial Pro Bowler and NFL iron man London Fletcher, 2013 Pro Bowlers Ryan Kerrigan and Lorenzo Alexander, former Pro Bowler Brian Orakpo, Perry Riley, and Rob Jackson, I think its safe to say that the Redskins depth at the linebacker position is simply unheard of.

However, while those six men have been instrumental in limiting opposing defenses for years, they have competition at staking claim as the best linebacking core in franchise history.

Hall of Famers Sam Huff and Chris Hanburger are arguably two of the great linebackers in NFL history and for a four-year stretch in the late 1960′s, they terrorized opponents week in and week out lining up in burgundy and gold together.

Find out what these two former teammates had to say about their reign of destruction together here:

Will You Be My [Belated] Valentine?

Posted by Stephen Czarda on February 15, 2013 – 5:17 pm

redskins-heard1

Mother Nature graces the DMV with brisk winter breezes during the month of February, causing many to be slightly on the grouchy side at times as they wait for the flowers to bloom and for family beach vacation season to kick into gear.

Today, however, spirits among the masses seems to be a little more cheery than a usual day during the shortest month of the year. There’s been an increase in heart-shaped objects, bouquets of flowers, and people ignoring their beach-bod diets in favor of adding some chocolate to their routines.

It’s almost like there’s a feeling of love in the air.

Well folks that’s because today is Valentine’s Day, the annual day of love!

Redskins Nation has a lot to love during this holiday as we are currently under blue skies, Punxsutawney Phil ( for those of you who don’t know, Phil is the famous groundhog of Groundhog Day) saw his shadow forecasting spring is on its way, and knowing that their favorite football team shocked the league this season claiming the NFC East title may be the sweetest treat of all!

The Redskins themselves have caught the love bug and have been spending their day with loved ones.

Find out what some of the players have been doing after being struck with Cupid’s arrow here:

Redskins Linebackers Garnering Attention

Posted by Stephen Czarda on January 23, 2013 – 2:55 pm

Ryan Kerrigan

(AP Photo)

On Sunday, linebackers London Fletcher and Ryan Kerrigan were named to the NFC Pro Bowl squad. They join fellow linebacker Lorenzo Alexander, who was selected as the NFC special-teamer, as well as offensive tackle Trent Williams for the annual game in Hawaii.

It is the fourth-consecutive trip for Fletcher, who was snubbed before coming to Washington in 2007.  It is the inaugural trip for teammates Kerrigan, Williams and Alexander.

With the rightful inclusion of three Redskins linebackers in the Pro Bowl, the Redskins now boast one of the strongest linebacking corps in the NFL. This is a major accomplishment for defensive coordinator Jim Haslett and his coaching staff, who converted the Redskins from a 4-3 system to the 3-4 after his arrival in 2010.

Find out what the rest of the Redskins linebacker unit said here as well as an interesting fact that the Redskins share with a Super Bowl-bound team:

Redskins Working Out in Unorthodox Ways

When you think of a Washington Redskins player’s workout routine, what do you picture?

Lifting exorbitant amount of weight bench pressing? Spending countless hours in the weight room doing biceps curls and squats?

While the players do indeed continue to weight lift during the offseason, after months of wear and tear on their bodies, they look for different ways to heal their bodies while still being able to train.

Sometimes, their training methods can be a little, lets say, unorthodox, at least for what you might expect.

Find out how the players are training here:

What do you get when you have eight hungry NFL linebackers and just one rookie in the entire group?

Keenan Robinson definitely learned the answer to that question last night.

His wallet now much lighter, Robinson treated seven of his fellow linebacker teammates to the annual rookie dinner last night in Washington, D.C.

In attendance was Robinson, Lorenzo Alexander, London Fletcher, Rob Jackson, Ryan Kerrigan, Brian Orakpo, Perry Riley and Chris Wilson.

Several of the guys went to Twitter to document this special occasion. Here’s a few of the tweets in order of their appearance last night:

Griffin III Wants To Convert LeBron James

Last night, the Washington Redskins defeated the defending Super Bowl champion New York Giants at home to extend their season-long winning streak to three games.

Tonight, several Redskins players were on hand to watch the struggling Washington Wizards take on the defending NBA champion Miami Heat in D.C.

Not many gave the Wizards a chance to pull off the upset; but, wouldn’t you know it — Washington was victorious once again.

The Wizards earned their second win of the season by hanging on to defeat the Eastern Division-leading Heat, 105-101, in front of a standing-room crowd at the Verizon Center.

Among those taking in the game from the Redskins were quarterback Robert Griffin III, outside linebacker Brian Orakpo, wide receivers Leonard Hankerson, Santana Moss and Joshua Morgan, tight end Fred Davis and long snapper Nick Sundberg.

Griffin III — who was sitting courtside next to the Wizards’ bench with his fiancée, Rebecca, to his right and Orakpo two seats to his left — tweeted this immediately after the game:

Check Out Brian Orakpo’s Surgery Scar

Posted by Andrew Walker on October 26, 2012 – 5:32 pm

(AP photo)

In his short time away from the game of football, tight end Chris Cooley joined Redskins Nation weekly for what became known as the “Cooley Report.”

Well, Cooley now has his attention in other places — he was re-signed by the Redskins on Monday — but another Redskins player with a little bit more free time on his hands could fill in his place in front of the cameras.

Outside Brian Orakpo, who suffered a season-ending pectoral injury Week 2 against the St. Louis Rams, joined Larry Michael for what he called the “‘Rak Report.” Whether or not it becomes a weekly thing is unknown at this point, but it sure is good just to see Orakpo back at the team’s facility.

Orakpo underwent surgery on his left pectoral muscle, and showed the scar to Michael on this week’s ‘Rak Report — and we’ve got the video.

Ryan Kerrigan Sacks High Utility Bills

Posted by Andrew Walker on August 22, 2012 – 12:08 pm

(AP photo)

Perhaps Redskins outside linebacker Ryan Kerrigan decided he had seen enough Brian Orakpo Geico commercials and wanted to get into the advertising game himself.

Or maybe Kerrigan just really hates high utility bills.

Whatever the case may be, Kerrigan is the most recent Redskins player to star in his own TV commericial — this time for Thompson Creek Window Company.
