Brian Orakpo’s Rights Rated Most Valuable

Posted by Gabe Hiatt on March 3, 2014 – 2:24 pm

By placing the franchise tag on Brian Orakpo, the Redskins assured the team rights to sign the most esteemed free agent at his position in 2014.

NFL Media dubbed Orakpo a tier one difference maker in a class of his own among linebackers. Evan Silva of Rotoworld named Orakpo his No. 5 impending free agent – tops among linebackers – and CBS Sports had him rated the third-best candidate for free agency.

DeAngelo Hall Will Recruit Free Agents

Posted by Gabe Hiatt on February 20, 2014 – 10:57 am

Picture this.

DeAngelo Hall walks to the door, adjusts his tie and softly knocks. It’s a pleasure to be here. I can’t wait to tell you about a team on the rise. These mashed potatoes are phenomenal. Why yes, Mrs. Orakpo, I will have have a second piece of pie. Let me tell you why Brian should pick the Redskins. Your son will be in good hands. I’ll call you soon.

After a stellar 2013 season convinced the Redskins to re-sign Hall, the cornerback said his first order of business will be to recruit from a talented class of free agents.  Read more »

Posted by Gabe Hiatt on February 18, 2014 – 3:27 pm

Even throughout a losing season, certain moments made you stand up and shout. Special plays etch themselves into our memories, where they lie dormant until a trigger brings them to the surface. Redskins TV has produced a series looking back at the top plays of 2013. Which will you remember?

Part two features:

-Aldrick Robinson running behind the Bears (and Chris Cooley’s head explodes).

-Brian Orakpo scoring off a Reed Doughty deflection against Chicago.

-Roy Helu Jr. notching a hat trick to defeat Da Bears.

Brian Orakpo A Top-5 Free Agent

Posted by Gabe Hiatt on February 13, 2014 – 11:21 am

While possibly the best free agent wide receiver prospect plays in the NFC East, the top available linebacker might already be in Washington.

According to an NFL.com Around The League list and a USA Today article, outside linebacker Brian Orakpo is the No. 3 rated free agent in 2014. Bleacher Report rates Orakpo as the seventh-most appealing man on the market, and Rotoworld rates Rak as the top linebacker in this year’s class.

“He can probably thrive in any scheme having also shined as a defensive end in college for Texas. But 3-4 teams will probably value him most,” USA Today wrote.

Trent Williams, Brian Orakpo Saved From Each Other At 2014 NFL Pro Bowl

Posted by Gabe Hiatt on January 23, 2014 – 12:33 pm

An absent Redskin switched teams due to a last-minute trade in Honolulu that ensured all three of Washington’s representatives would play for Deion Sanders in the 2014 NFL Pro Bowl.

Jerry Rice traded Brian Orakpo, who had not yet arrived in Hawaii, to Sanders for NFL sack leader Robert Mathis in the final move of the Pro Bowl draft. Per the rules of the new draft format, Rice was allowed to force a trade for any non-quarterback because his team picked second.  Read more »

Deion Sanders, Jerry Rice Slept On Alfred Morris In The Pro Bowl Draft

Posted by Gabe Hiatt on January 23, 2014 – 11:11 am

Once again, the talent evaulators forgot about Alfred Morris.

Leading up to Sunday, the NFL has done everything it can to make the 2014 Pro Bowl a spectacle. Deion Sanders has grown snow-white scruff that plays nicely off his team’s neon key lime motif. Jerry Rice got up in Sanders’ grill like Richard Sherman at a prefight weigh-in with Floyd Mayweather. Sadly, there were no dropkicks.

The two Hall-of-Famers selected their all-star teams Wednesday in the second day of the unconferenced Pro Bowl draft. Neither picked Alfred Morris, who was assigned to Team Sanders in the 19th round because Rice had reached his position limit with three running backs.  Read more »

Posted by Gabe Hiatt on January 2, 2014 – 12:00 pm

Running back Alfred Morris, linebacker Brian Orakpo and cornerback DeAngelo Hall each earned a spot on ESPN’s list of the best players in the NFC East.

After a 3-13 regular season, the Redskins placed the least players of the four teams composing the divisional all-start squad.

ESPN did not award a spot to the NFL’s leading receiver or Washington’s lone Pro Bowler.

Here’s a look at the full team. Read more »

Redskins Pro Bowlers Announced

Posted by Gabe Hiatt on December 27, 2013 – 9:00 pm

Trent Williams

Congratulations to Trent Williams for earning his second consecutive Pro Bowl selection. The offensive tackle was an integral piece of  a Redskins offensive line that has started every game together and blocked Washington to the NFL’s fourth-most yards rushing.

In addition to Williams, four Redskins made the newly formatted all-star game as alternates available to replace starters sitting out with injuries or playing in the Super Bowl.  Read more »

The NFL won’t release its official list of 2014 Pro Bowl selections until 9 p.m. ET Friday night, but CBS Sports Senior NFL Columnist Pete Prisco already has his personal list available.

Which Linebacker Ends With More Sacks?

Posted by Stephen Czarda on December 26, 2013 – 2:30 pm

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

One is a rough, snarling Texas born star that makes grown men hide under shadows. The other has perfectly manicured hair and can’t grow a mustache to save his life but evolves into a pass-rush freak the moment he puts on a burgundy and gold uniform.

With only one game remaining against a susceptible New York Giants offensive line, Brian Orakpo (10.0) and Ryan Kerrigan (8.5) can become the first pair of Redskins to record 10-plus sacks together in a season since Orakpo and Andre Carter each got 11 in 2009.

While it’d be a pretty big accomplishment and would further extend the hype of Kerrakpo, Redskins.com’s feature poll this week asks you who YOU think will finish the season with more quarterback takedowns.

If you’re torn over who to select, check out select highlight videos of both below:
