Statistical Updates: Redskins-Jaguars

The Washington Redskins last Sunday dominated in their 41-10 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars at FedExField. A big part of that attack was the Redskins’ defense, which tied a team record with 10 sacks in the game.

With so many sacks in one game, it can often be confusing at that exact moment for an official scorer to determine who should — and who shouldn’t — be credited with the play. So oftentimes, teams will contact the league and Elias Sports Bureau throughout the next week to clear that up.

Elias then typically meets with the league office to review certain plays.

That’s what happened this week for the Redskins, who got some clarity on a few plays from Elias researchers.

Brian Orakpo Makes Appearance On NFL.com’s Indispensable List

Good height and upper-body build. … Plays with his hand down, but stands up at times. … Easily gets off blocks of offensive tackles to make a play in the hole. … Can also hold his ground well against larger tackles. … Has good backfield awareness, watching for misdirection, cutbacks and bootlegs. … Closes on the quarterback well and secures the tackle. …

That was Washington Redskins linebacker Brian Orakpo’s scouting report before being selected by the franchise in the 2009 NFL Draft.

39.5 sacks later and countless plays where his pressure has caused opposing quarterbacks to question their reasoning for playing the sport, it’s logical to place the grizzled Texan as one of the league’s most important defensive players.

Checking in on NFL.com Media Analyst Adam Schein’s Most Indispensable list, here’s a little bit more about the man Redskins Nation refers to as ‘Rak.

230 tackles, 39.5 sacks, six forced fumbles and countless sleepless nights for opposing quarterbacks–yeah, it makes sense why Washington Redskins linebacker Brian Orakpo is considered the top No. 13 overall pick of the last decade by NFL.com.

Referred to as the top “rock star” at that particular slot since 2003, here are some of his best quarterback rockin’ moments since 2009:

There was a cool moment for two Redskins players this morning, but perhaps the moment was even cooler for the guy they were excited to meet.

Redskins outside linebacker Brian Orakpo and quarterback Colt McCoy were hitting the links this morning for a good cause at the Mack, Jack & McConaughey (MJ&M) Celebrity Golf Tournament at Barton Creek Country Club in Austin, Texas.

And who did these two University of Texas Longhorns run into at the golf course? None other than fellow Texas alum, and huge Redskins fan, Matthew McConaughey.

Orakpo tweeted a photo of the moment. Of course those involved are throwing up their “Hook ‘Em Horns” hand signs:

Where The Swag Lives

Posted by Gabe Hiatt on March 27, 2014 – 3:49 pm

RakAttack

Brian Orakpo entered the studio at Redskins Park positively dripping with swag. Don’t ask me my why style has liquid properties. It just does.

Fresh off signing a one-year franchise tender that would guarantee his position in Washington’s defense for 2014, Orakpo sat down with Tarik El-Bashir and Chris Wilson to tape This Week @ The Park on Thursday. He insisted he needed a microphone to amplify the “Barry White” voice he’s had since the third grade.

The linebacker’s cap read, “Don’t Trip.” His gold watch matched the chains around his neck and the zipper on his varsity jacket.

Orakpo said his streetwear was indicative of an attitude that starts in the linebacker corps.

Brian Orakpo told the kids he needed to make a change.

In a video released by the Mid Atlantic Dairy Association, Orakpo told a group of schoolchildren why he decided to improve his diet by eliminating junk and emphasizing nutrient-rich foods like milk and yogurt. The linebacker is part of a Fuel Up to Play 60 initiative emphasizing the importance of a balanced breakfast.

“I used to be like you guys, eating all kinds of candies and chips and stuff, anything that was easy you know,” Orakpo said.

“I used to be like that, but I had to change the direction of my life if I wanted to be where I wanted to be, and that was playing professional football.”

Posted by Gabe Hiatt on March 4, 2014 – 1:16 pm

(AP)

The news of the day in the NFL Monday was unquestionably how teams would manipulate the franchise tag before the 4 p.m. deadline.

The Redskins applied the tag to Brian Orakpo while other teams made decisions that could affect how Washington approaches free agency beginning a week from Tuesday.

RGIII, Hall, Baker Welcome Back Orakpo

Posted by Gabe Hiatt on March 4, 2014 – 10:19 am

Although the franchise tag is not a guarantee Brian Orakpo will return to the Redskins in 2014, it grants the Redskins control of his rights and allows the team more time to negotiate a long-term deal should Washington want to move in that direction.

Orakpo has taken the move in stride.

“They did what they had to do,” he told the Washington Post. “I’m just kind of glad we can at least make a step moving forward instead of being at a stalemate with this whole situation.”

The linebacker’s probable return was reason enough for his teammates to celebrate on Twitter. Read more »
