Although 40-yard dashes, broad jumps and bench press reps don’t really give us an idea of a prospect’s viability as a football player, the physical tests can give a glimpse at a man’s raw athletic potential and ability to thrive in a competitive atmosphere. Over the course of the 2014 NFL Scouting Combine, the Redskins blog will take a look back at how Washington’s past three draft classes fared in Indianapolis.

It’s the news of the day. Brian Orakpo, London Fletcher

Veteran linebacker London Fletcher walked into the media room deep inside Redskins Park after practice, grabbed the team logoed microphone and announced that he’s 99 percent certain Week 17 will be the last time he dons an NFL jersey with shoulder pads underneath.

Soon after, teammates ranging from fellow old-timer Santana Moss to rookies nearly half his age began reflecting on their time with and under the grizzled four-time Pro Bowler.

Sometimes those of us on the outside forget how much time players spend with one another. The countless hours together often breeds unbreakable bonds that last a lifetime.

Fellow linebacker mates scratched the surface of what Fletcher’s presence has meant to their professional careers shortly after the announcement spread through the Internet:

In case you missed it this weekend due to either being away at the beach making sandcastles for the last time in 2013 or were simply enjoying back-to-back gorgeous a lot happened during the weekend ranging from roster trimmings to filling out a practice squad with all familiar faces.

For four, they will also be seeing new numbers this morning at practice. For whatever reason, jersey numbers choices are always intriguing. Maybe it’s due to the next jersey purchase or rooting for that guy that has the same number you did growing up, but the changes are as follows:

Lisfranc Injury Not What It Once Was

Call it the worst sounding injury in the NFL. Not by what it does to a player per se, but the actual name.

Lisfranc (sounds like Liz Frank).

Based on the name alone, it sounds more like a mildly painful condition that a runway model might experience. But make no mistake: a Lisfranc injury is serious business. In fact, it wasn’t too long ago that it was tagged as career threatening. With new medical advances, this is no longer the case, which is great news for rookie safety Phillip Thomas.

Rookie Spotlight: Brandon Jenkins

Each day during training camp, the Redskins Blog will be highlighting one rookie as they participate in their first professional camp and try to find their way onto the final roster. Today’s spotlight is on linebacker Brandon Jenkins.

One of the more under-the-radar moves that the Washington Redskins made during the offseason was the selection of Florida State University linebacker Brandon Jenkins in the fifth round (162nd overall) of the NFL Draft.

Each year, fans flock to training camps across the country to see how rookies are translating to life at the NFL level. While watching the teams gel as a collective unit, they often keep a keen eye on late round rookies, hopeful that they have landed a stud.

For those of you who are coming to Richmond, make sure to pay close attention to Jenkins. After falling down the board simply due to an injury derailed final season at FSU, he wants to do what anyone in position would—hit somebody.

“First thing I wanted to do is just hit somebody,” Jenkins said about returning to the field full healthy. “It’s been that long.”

Candidates For First Deacon Jones Award

On June 3rd the National Football League lost one of the greatest players to ever step foot on the gridiron, defensive end David “Deacon” Jones.

Jones, who finished his illustrious career with the Washington Redskins, is best known for terrorizing opposing quarterbacks and coining the term “sack” during his 14-year career.

Long before 2009 Hall of Fame inductee and former Redskin Bruce Smith notched his record breaking 199th career sack against the New York Giants in 2003, Jones was literally changing the game and making sure that defensive players got their name in the papers as well.

To honor Jones’ career of being a quarterback’s worst nightmare, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell announced that the league will honor each season’s sack king with the Deacon Jones Award at the annual NFL Honors awards extravaganza.

Could a current Redskin bring home the inaugural award?

Outside Linebacker Trio In Upper Echlon

The following is a Public Service Announcement for Redskins Nation.

After missing the majority of the 2012 season outside linebacker Brian Orakpo is back, full healthy and ready to scare NFL quarterbacks once again.

Isn’t that music to the ears?

After suffering a season-ending pectoral injury in Week 2 against the St. Louis Rams last year, No. 98 is prepared to fight for a division crown on the field this go around (with this menacing facemask) instead of being the Burgundy and Gold’s number one sideline supporter.

While ‘Rak certainly still wishes that he could have added to his 29.5 career sacks during the team’s seven- game winning streak last year, he like the rest of us got to watch fellow bookend Ryan Kerrigan blossom into a Pro Bowler.

Now, the duo (known more affectionately Kerrakpo) along with free agent acquisition Darryl Tapp are consider a top-five outside linebacker unit.

FSU Players Can Hit Historic Marks Early

Posted by Stephen Czarda on May 15, 2013 – 4:32 pm

On Wednesday, 2013 fifth round pick draft pick Chris Thompson officially became a member of the Washington Redskins when he signed his first NFL contract.

Welcome to the big leagues.

Thompson was one of two Florida State University players that the Redskins selected in the fifth round as his college teammate, Brandon Jenkins, was picked just eight spots after the running back.

While the twosome have already made Burgundy and Gold history by becoming the first ever FSU teammates to be selected in the same draft class, they have a chance to be the best FSU prospects to ever come to the Nation’s Capital.

Just by stepping on the field.

Local Rapper Welcomes FSU Draftees

Tallahassee, Florida is the capital of the Sunshine State, the center of agricultural work in the panhandle, and now can also claim to have produced two Redskins draft picks in the same round.

Hailing from Florida State University, Chris Thompson and Brandon Jenkins were selected within eight picks of each other in the fifth round on Saturday.

While it isn’t a rarity for college teammates to find themselves making the journey together from their college dorm rooms to an NFL locker room (think DeJon Gomes, Roy Helu Jr., and Niles Paul from Nebraska for example), the Burgundy and Gold had never taken FSU teammates together in a single draft let alone in the same round.

As the two prepare to make the almost 900 mile trek from Florida’s capital to the Nation’s Capital, one man who calls both areas home extended a welcoming hand to the newest Washington Redskins:
