Angela Rypien Named Hottest Of All Time

Posted by Gabe Hiatt on March 26, 2014 – 12:39 pm

Angela Rypien, daughter of former Redskins quarterback Mark Rypien, was named the “hottest” Legends Football League (formerly the Lingerie Football League) athlete of all time in a list unveiled by the league and TMZ Sports.

The field included 1,600 women throughout the sport’s three leagues in Australia, Canada and the U.S.

While this may seem like blatant click bait – Um, okay, it is – it’s also an opportunity to reflect on Rypien’s place in a growing sports league and how her father feels about it.

Rypien Topples Green Bay In Pro Debut

For those of you that don’t watch MTV 2’s Lingerie Football League, it’s like the Arena Football League, but better.

In her first start as a  quarterback, Angela Rypien–daughter of Redskins great, Mark–did what her pops never did as a pro: beat Green Bay.

As LFL writers Pat Murphy and Jim Wallin wrote in their post game report, Rypien got the most out of her completions on the day:

Rypien, the daughter of former Washington Redskins quarterback and Super Bowl MVP Mark Rypien, completed just 6-of-16 passes for 81 yards but threw for three touchdowns and managed the offense well while avoiding interceptions in the second half as the Mist pulled away.

Mark Rypien And Angela Rypien Have A Catch

Posted by Matt Terl on May 31, 2011 – 9:33 am

This doesn’t really warrant its own post; in a perfect world, this would just have been the art that illustrated my interview with Mark Rypien about his daughter Angela’s new gig in the Lingerie Football League. But this isn’t a perfect world, as we all learn again and again in life, and this image wasn’t added to to the Robert Delfin Photography Facebook page until yesterday.

This image is largely devoid of context — just the younger Rypien, left, and her Super Bowl MVP dad, right, tossing the ball around. Mark Rypien even mentioned that he had helped teach Angela some QB basics — including the drop, as we’re seeing here — and joked that his daughter “has better guns than I do, and probably throws a better ball than I do right now.” So it’s not like this is the first time this has happened.

In my head, though, it’s the last scene in Field Of Dreams, with the portentous, hopeful music playing in the background as years of unresolved issues are solved through the simple having of a catch. I’ve embedded the song in question below if you want to listen to it while you look at the picture; it adds a whole bunch of completely unearned drama to the experience.

Mark Rypien Weighs In On His Daughter And The Lingerie Football League

Posted by Matt Terl on May 23, 2011 – 3:38 pm

There are two reasons that I was a little apprehensive about asking Mark Rypien about his daughter Angela’s new gig as quarterback for the Seattle Mist of the Lingerie Football League:

  1. 1) Because I was fifteen years old when Rypien led the Redskins to the Super Bowl; he was one of first players I ever wrote to for an autograph, and in my head he’ll always be where he is in that photo above: about to chuck the ball in a beautiful arc sixty yards downfield. I don’t often get starstruck — one of the main (exceedingly obvious) lessons I’ve learned writing this blog is that even the biggest NFL stars tend to be pretty normal folks — but for some reason this time felt like something of an exception. (The other major exception was Doug Williams. Maybe I’m just terrified of quarterbacks.)
  2. 2) Because asking someone a question involving the words “daughter” and “lingerie” is rarely fun, especially when the someone in question is 6-foot-4 and not all THAT far removed from a career as a professional football player.

If Rypien had been a jerk in general, the fond memories engendered by item 1 would’ve been damaged; if Rypien reacted poorly to item 2, my fifteen-year-old self would’ve been retroactively devastated.

Thankfully, neither of those things happened. Quite the opposite, actually: when I introduced myself to Rypien at the charity auction the night before the Mickey Steele Memorial Celebrity Golf Outing (which partially benefitted The Rypien Foundation), he asked if i was the one who had written up that interview with Angela; I acknowledged — only a bit skittishly — that I was, he said he’d enjoyed the piece, and just like that most of the awkwardness was removed from the topic.

Notice that I said most. Read more »

Angela Rypien Discusses Her Dad And Getting Ready For The LFL Season

Posted by Matt Terl on May 16, 2011 – 3:30 pm

When news first broke about Angela Rypien working out at quarterback for the Lingerie Football League‘s Seattle Mist, I wrote that I’d do my best to keep up with the story as it developed. I was half-joking about it; the Redskins hook is that Angela Rypien is the daughter of Mark Rypien, MVP of Super Bowl XXVI and quarterback of one of the best offenses in Redskins history, but that barely seemed enough to warrant coverage here. It felt like an interesting aside in a historically slow offseason, but maybe not much more.

And then I spoke to the younger Rypien about her new gig, and — just like when I spoke to former Redskins linebacker Matt Sinclair about his stint coaching in the LFL — was struck by how seriously she takes the game.

“I think when people hear the name, they don’t exactly understand, or they kind of just turn their nose up,” Rypien says. “Just hearing about ‘Oh, lingerie,’ they don’t expect us to be playing real football and know that it’s full contact. It’s something that all of us are in just for the love of it, so I think it’s important for people not to judge until they really know about it.” Read more »

Mark Rypien's Daughter Now A QB As Well

Posted by Matt Terl on May 11, 2011 – 12:02 pm

In the not-too-distant past, I’ve written about the daughters of former Redskins coaches AND about a former Redskins player coaching in the Lingerie Football League. So I feel like I’d be completely failing my established standards if I didn’t mention reports that a former Redskins player’s daughter will be playing in the Lingerie Football League.

The player in question is Mark Rypien, Super Bowl XXVI MVP and quarterback of one of the most underrated teams in NFL history, the 1991 Redskins squad. His daugher is Angela, and her Lingerie Football team will be the Seattle Mist.

Annnnd…. that’s about the extent of the information provided by KentReporter.com: Angela Rypien is Mark’s daughter, and will be playing QB.

I promise to do my best to keep up with updates as this story develops.
