Back In The Day Alex Ovechkin Shared His Redskins Jersey With Nicklas Backstrom

Posted by Gabe Hiatt on February 5, 2014 – 2:10 pm

Down the jersey rabbit hole we go.

On Wednesday the DC Sports Bog directed me to this article from Dick’s Sporting Goods about reigning NHL MVP Alex Ovechkin’s jersey collection.

“I have LeBron and am going to get Kobe and Michael Jordan,” Ovechkin said. “I also have RG3 and Chris Cooley ones.”

After a little digging through the archives in this space, I found images from 2008 and 2009 that verify at least one item in the closet of the Washington Capitals captain.

DeAngelo Hall Likes The D.C. Sports Scene

Posted by Matt Terl on October 13, 2010 – 1:00 pm

Shortly after the win against the Packers on Sunday, Redskins cornerback DeAngelo Hall tweeted the above picture of himself, his son, and Capitals star Alex Ovechkin, along with the message, “Gotta Support DC Sports! Shout out to the best Hockey Player in the Best Sports Town! Great8-HTTR”.

During today’s open locker room, he explained a little bit about how that came about. “He came up to me after the game, said ‘What’s up,’ wanted to see how everything was going,” Hall said. Which is probably pretty much just like your postgame, bumping into old friends and/or the greatest hockey player on the planet.

Hall added that he’d met Ovechkin “a couple of times before” and that since he’s been in D.C. he’s gone to a couple of hockey games. “He’s a Skins fan,” Hall said. “You know, as D.C. guys, we all gotta stick together. We all go support John Wall — he done been to a couple football games too — so, you know, we’ll all stick together.”

He also explained the slightly complicated process of explaining to his son — NOT a hockey fan — who Ovechkin was. Read more »

Washington Capitals At FedExField

Posted by Matt Terl on January 29, 2010 – 3:45 pm

Way back in October, back before the Redskins season had officially gone south and long before the Capitals got onto the impressive winning streak they’re currently riding, a few of the hockey stars came out to FedExField for the Redskins game against the Buccaneers.

I wrote at the time about Alex Ovechkin kicking field goals pre-game (including a video of one successful attempt), Dan Steinberg of the D.C. Sports Bog talked to Mike Green and Nicklas Backstrom about the Redskins, Tanner Cooley gave Green and Backstrom a camera so they could interview Redskins players, and that seemed to cover just about everything that could be said about this titanic team-up of D.C. sports royalty.

And maybe it did cover everything that could be said, but while I was digging through folders from this season’s games for unrelated reasons, I came across a whole batch of photos from the Caps/Redskins pregame that I’d never seen before. Since the Redskins beat the Bucs — a Florida team — that day, and since the Caps are playing the Panthers — a Florida team — tonight, it seemed like an auspicious time to share them.

As always, click the images to enlarge. Read more »

Chris Cooley Kicks Field Goals At Practice

Posted by Matt Terl on October 23, 2009 – 5:04 pm

Head coach Jim Zorn was full of praise for kicker Shaun Suisham during his post-practice press briefing today. Asked if the holder last year was hurting Suisham’s percentages, Zorn said, “A kicker has to go out and kick, whoever is holding. If I held and the ball was flat on the tee – he has still got to hit it, right? But there is a rhythm. He has worked very hard and he has concentrated on the rhythm of the kick. I think his holder has given him more and more confidence, but he has done it. He has developed the rhythm, the steadiness, he is more patient, and he is not so much attacking the ball early. He saw a lot of different types of rhythms last year. He is much smoother and I think that is what happens to a kicker. He has found his rhythm.”

Also finding his rhythm kicking today? Chris Cooley. The start of practice was delayed by the shooting of the team photo, which also required an extra uniform change. “I had extra time because I brought out my extra gear for practice before the photo,” Cooley explained, “so when everyone else had to change, you could just consider this my early warm-up.”

Cooley did well, especially in the early efforts you see in the video. (Later, he had a miss that came off the tee low and fast and nearly clocked Ethan Albright in the head.) “I hit from 40 yards with some coaching from Shaun,” he told me, “but I used to be solid from 50. When Koz [former Redskins TE Brian Kozlowski] was here, we would play the kicking games a lot. We were out punting and kicking field goals all the time so I actually got pretty good. But I haven’t kicked at all lately.” Read more »
