More than 120 students from nearby Sterling Middle School got a chance hang out with their favorite Washington Redskins players and get in a good workout Tuesday.
The Redskins played host to an NFL Play 60 Mini-Combine at their Ashburn, Va., facility, and took advantage of their new indoor training facility by taking things inside as rains and heavy winds moved over the area.
The event was a team effort between the Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation, Commonwealth Orthopaedics, DePuy Mitek, Inc. and Safe Kids Worldwide.
The students were being trained with the help of nine Redskins players who were happy to participate on their day off Tuesday, including:

Chicago Game A Homecoming For Gettis
Posted by on August 20, 2012 – 9:59 amSaturday’s preseason game pitting the Washington Redskins against the Chicago Bears at Solider Field must’ve been a tough one for Felecia Gettis.
Felecia, the mother of rookie Redskins offensive lineman Adam Gettis, calls the Windy City home, but her son was starting at right guard for the opposing team.
Nevertheless, Felecia was clad in her No. 73 Redskins jersey and proudly cheering for her son Saturday night.

Rookie Spotlight: Adam Gettis
Posted by on August 1, 2012 – 1:48 pmEach day during training camp, the Redskins Blog will be highlighting one rookie as they participate in their first professional camp and try to find their way onto the final roster. Today’s spotlight is on guard Adam Gettis.
Washington Redskins’ rookie guard Adam Gettis first played organized football his freshman year in high school and developed into a two-star prospect not recruited to play by many big colleges.
Fast forward five years later, and Gettis is the fifth-round selection of the Redskins in April’s NFL Draft.
It’s been a whirlwind experience that even Gettis said he can’t believe sometimes.
“You don’t think it’s going to happen,” Gettis said Monday after the Redskins’ morning walk-through practice. “Being a two-star guy, you don’t think those guys are going to make it, but it’s all about work and opportunity and you have to take advantage of those types of things.”

‘Which One Of You Guys Are RGIII?’

I’d imagine one of the cooler parts of becoming a professional football player is being recognized in public and asked for an autograph or photo.
But Redskins’ rookie guard Adam Gettis explained Monday how overzealous fans can sometimes get it wrong in their autograph hunts.

Redskins Pad O-Line With Adam Gettis

The Redskins continue to target the interior offensive line with draft picks, as they added Iowa Hawkeye Adam Gettis with the No. 141 overall pick.
Gettis possesses good speed and quickness of the snap, a benefit to overcome his undersized frame. This was his Combine scouting report from NFL.com:
He consistently gets into his man first when pass blocking and is a good overall blocker because of it. He wins with leverage, which is often the only way to gain an advantage on bigger foes.
Gettis is very polished in his hand and footwork, and understands pad and helmet placement’s importance in gaining a blocking advantage. His quick feet allow him to be a very mobile and versatile blocker.
In the lead up to the draft, Profootballtalk.com listed Gettis as a fast-riser in the draft. According to Evan Silva:
Gettis’ two unofficial forty times were 4.91 and 5.00, both impressive for a 293-pound football player. He posted the fastest unofficial 10-yard split among offensive linemen, clearing the first quarter of the forty in 1.65 seconds.
Shanahan prefers the smaller faster linemen for the zone blocking scheme. Gettis may need to bulk up some in the pros, but this was likely good value for the system. Injuries were a major issue on the offensive line in 2012, and they have already selected two interior linemen.
Curious that they have not added anything at offensive tackle, but there’s still time and several picks to go.
Here is Gettis’s draft profile, courtesy of Pro Football Weekly: Read more »
