Mark your calendars Redskins Nation its official, the 2012 NFC East champions will open the 2013 slate against NFC East rival Philadelphia Eagles on Monday Night Football at FedExField. The opener is one of five primetime affairs for the Burgundy and Gold.

And yes its the same Eagles who the Redskins swept during the 2012 campaign including a 31-6 victory at FedExField that jump started the Redskins epic run to the postseason.

With plenty of storylines to dig into, it only seems fitting to do a way too early preview of a game that is still months away.

Here are some topics to follow that night:

The Washington Redskins and Philadelphia Eagles have met 156 times dating back to 1934 when the Burgundy and Gold beat the Eagles in a defensive contest, 6-0.

Don’t expect such a low scoring game this time around, though.

With Robert Griffin III and Alfred Morris leading the charge for the Redskins and former Virginia Tech star Michael Vick and 2011 All-Pro running back LeSean McCoy taking command of the Eagles offense, there’s not telling how many big plays could come on offense that night.

Remember last year the highly talked about matchup between Griffin III and Vick never came to fruition as the Eagles gunslinger was sideline both times the teams took the field.

The waiting game to see these two human highlight reels battle for a number one spot on top play countdowns could finally be coming to an end.

Speaking of offensive fireworks, will newly-minted Eagles coach Chip Kelly be able to translate his highly successful spread offense to the pros or will two-time Super Bowl winning coach Mike Shanahan spoil his professional debut?

Kelly’s offense, however, could struggle against the Redskins defense especially with the pending returns of linebacker Brian Orakpo and defensive end Adam Carriker.

Orakpo will rejoin fellow linebackers Ryan Kerrigan, London Fletcher, and Perry Riley to form the best linebacking unit in the league. Fletcher and Riley finished last season in the top-15 in tackles while Kerrigan appeared in his first Pro Bowl.

Other storylines to follow:

–Morris broke the Redskins single-season rushing record in his first year, what will he have for an encore in year two?

–How will the newest members of the team perform in their first regular season games in Burgundy and Gold?

–Tight end Fred Davis was one of Griffin III’s favorite targets before he went down with a season-ending injury in Week 7 last year, will a fully healthy Davis be No. 1o’s go-to-guy once again?

–This is the Redskins second primetime, home opener under Shanahan. In his debut in the Nation’s Capital in 2010, the Redskins defeated the Cowboys 13-7 on Sunday Night Football.

–Same story, different year: Fletcher’s games played streak. Need I say more?

Check back with the blog and website as we will be dissecting each game over the next few weeks as we inch closer to September 9th.

Tell me your thoughts on the schedule as well as the opener at FedExField.

Hail to the Redskins!

By now you know all about the 2012 campaign where the Burgundy and Gold secured their first division title since the turn of the century.

While the season that was will go down as one of the most exciting in franchise history thanks in large part to the instant injection of highlight reel moments by rookie record-breakers Robert Griffin III and Alfred Morris, the team as a whole stepped up their “game” after the bye week and made those that told them it was time to consider the season a lost cause bite their tongues.

With the 2013 season fast approaching (OTAs start next week!) its time to look forward to what the campaign can bring to the DMV.

As I was browsing the Internet this morning I came across an article by Yahoo! Sports that states what they believe will be key to the Redskins making back-to-back playoff appearances for the first time since they made it three straight years from 1990-1992. (Also, in the second year—the Redskins made the playoffs they won Super Bowl XXVI. Just sayin’.)

So lets take a look at what they believe will help the franchise make the 2013 playoffs.

According to Russell Baxter, the Washington Redskins will find themselves playing in January and beyond if…

“Washington stays committed to the running game. With a major assist from rookie running back Alfred (1,613), the Redskins totaled an NFL-high 2,709 yards rushing in 16 games last season (169.3 yards per game); totaling more than 1,100 yards than they did (1,614) in 2011. Combine that with the efficient passing of quarterback Robert Griffin III and it was little wonder that Shanahan’s team scored 436 points and totaled 46 offensive touchdowns, up considerably from the previous season (288 points, 27 offensive touchdowns).”

Not only do Morris and Griffin III have a season of professional experience under their belts, the running game and passing game for the matter, will benefit from the return of Roy Helu Jr. to the lineup. Helu Jr. spent the majority of the 2012 season on Injured Reserve after being plagued with lower bodies issues. In 2011, Helu Jr. tallied over 1,000 combined yards and his versatility will play dividends to the read-option attack.

The Redskins will also return to the playoffs if…

“Griffin III (7) as well as backup quarterback Kirk Cousins (3) continue to practice ball security. The two rookie signal-callers last season coughed up the ball a combined 10 times. Hence, the Redskins were guilty of an NFL-low 14 turnovers in 2012.”

The fact that Griffin III and Kirk Cousins were in their first seasons in the NFL and only turned it over is impressive and when you factor in that Morris only coughed up the pigskins three times on his 348 touches is just as amazing.

The one worry that Baxter has with the Redskins chances to be one of the last 12 teams standing, however, is how the defense will perform.

“If Washington’s defense doesn’t look a whole lot better than it did a year ago, the team’s reign as NFC East champions will be short-lived. Injuries to defensive end Adam Carriker and outside linebacker Brian Orakpo in a Week 2 loss at St. Louis took their toll on the defense as it totaled only 32 sacks while allowing 31 touchdown passes. The Redskins also gave up 388 points, the most among the league’s 12 playoff teams in 2012.”

In 2011, Adam Carriker and Brian Orakp0 combined for 93 tackles, 14.5 sacks, and five passes defensed and will help bolster the unit’s threat to opposing quarterbacks with their pending returns. With newly signed cornerback E.J. Biggers and a fully healthy Brandon Meriweather in the secondary, passing touchdowns given up may be few and far between.

So Redskins Nation, what do YOU think will be vital for the Redskins to make a march into the 2013 playoffs?

Chime in here!

Adam Carriker is one of the strongest players in the league as the gargantuan of a man has been spotted benching as much as 500 pounds.

While I am no weightlifting expert by any stretch of the imagination, I think its safe to assume that a number as massive as that is rarely reached.

While Carriker’s job is to bully over helpless opponents and crush opposing gunslingers, he has taken up a passion for wrestling that has been well documented through the years.

As the new league year kicked off a few weeks ago with the start of free agency, teams are gearing up for the chance to hoist the Lombardi Trophy next February in New Jersey.

In the wrestling world, WWE’s Wrestlemania is equivalent to the Super Bowl and the event will take place in New Jersey this weekend. With WWE making one last pit stop in our Nation’s Capital before the big event, there was no way Carriker wasn’t going to miss a second of the action.

At the Verizon Center. Getting ready for #Raw tonight. http://t.co/fmRNCNCGg6—
Adam Carriker (@AdamCarriker94) April 01, 2013

Carriker is known in the wrestling world as being one of the most ardent fans and even has his own radio show, 4th & Pain, dedicated to what else —wrestling and football.

Once you have an “in” with the wrestling world you occasionally get some perks such as meeting the guys backstage.

Backstage with @TrueKofi http://t.co/YbSc4333Au—
Adam Carriker (@AdamCarriker94) April 01, 2013

Now when you look at Adam you can just tell that he is a physical specimen. Quick look at number 94 and one thing stands out—his massive arms.

The goal of wrestling is to either pin your opponent or have him submit and while having a comprehensive move-set is certainly is important, sometimes you just have to be simply stronger.

So is Carriker bigger than a wrestler?

You be the judge.

#LargestArmsOnDLine with @TitusONeilWWE #Raw @WWE http://t.co/MlRvesbekE—
Adam Carriker (@AdamCarriker94) April 01, 2013

Ask me for my answer and I’d say Carriker is the champ of biggest arms.

Now you know the Carriker was going to get some of the best seats in the house for the show and was joined by his teammate and fellow wrestling fan Pierre Garcon in the front row just behind the announcers tables.

On the big screen you’ll see former UFC Champion/current WWE wrestler Brock Lesnar with a look of fear on his face. While it could of been for the men in the ring, I have a feeling it could of been what was just beyond it—Carriker and his giants arms.

Despite the fact that The Rock has become one of the biggest stars in Hollywood over the past few years, he is actually on top of the wrestling world as WWE Champion.

The Rock is one of the most popular wrestlers of all-time and has his millions and millions of fans. Two of which just happen to wear the Burgundy and Gold on Sundays.

Who knows if you’ll spot Carriker this Sunday in New Jersey for Wrestlemania, but I’m sure he wants to be seen there on February 2, 2014 bringing home another Super Bowl Trophy to the DMV.

However—with the New Jersey area turning into a frozen tundra of sorts during the winter months, hopefully he would dress for the brisk conditions and not like this.

Last week, the Washington Redskins signed former Philadelphia Eagle and Seattle Seahawk Darryl Tapp. During his seven years in the National Football League, Tapp has dug his hand deep in the dirt in the three-point stance on the line.

However, with the Burgundy and Gold Tapp will convert to linebacker and provide quality depth for one of the best linebacking units in the league that includes Pro Bowlers London Fletcher, Ryan Kerrigan and Brian Orakpo. Middle linebacker Perry Riley was top-15 in tackles in his first year as a full-time starter and Rob Jackson burst onto the scene after setting career-highs across the board including a key interception in the team’s Week 17 NFC East clinching victory against the Dallas Cowboys.

While he has spent the past three years with one of the Redskins biggest foes, Tapp is ready to play for the team he grew up rooting for.

Sometimes u jus gotta go home—
Darryl Tapp (@dtapp55) March 28, 2013

Tapp was born and raised in Redskins country in Portsmouth, Virginia. After a standout career at Deep Creek High School, he had several options as to where he could play at the next level. Although he had discussions with the University of Virginia and the University of Florida, he ultimately decided to stay close to home and attended Virginia Tech under coaching legend Frank Beamer.

Over the last several decades, Virginia Tech’s success has been built on lockdown defenses. From 2003-2006, the unit’s dominance was headlined by Tapp. His senior season was his best as he was an All-American nomination for a top-15 team that held opponents to 20 points or less in 10 out of 13 contests.

Across the board the 2006 NFL Draft was one of the deepest in league history. While the first round was littered with high-profile prospects, the entire draft features 35 different players that have appeared at the Pro Bowl.

After the Seattle Seahawks selected Tapp with the 53rd overall pick in the draft, the Virginia Tech product made a cross country move to Washington state.

After four years in the Emerald City, Tapp decided to move closer to home and wound up with the Philadelphia Eagles before signing with the Burgundy and Gold.

For his career Tapp has 288 tackles, 24 sacks, nine forced fumbles and two interceptions. 47 of his 288 tackles have come against NFC East teams, and yes for those of you who are wondering 14 of those have come against Washington.

As an admitted lifelong Redskins fan one can only wonder the mixed emotions he might have felt on each take down. No worries for Tapp or the Redskins as he is coming home to the team that he loves.

With four playoff starts and 107 career appearances, Tapp fits in perfectly with an experienced defensive unit that will also featuring the return of Adam Carriker.

Keep and eye on Tapp’s transition to linebacker under defensive coordinator Jim Haslett and his 3-4 scheme during training camp this summer in Richmond. With Fletcher, Kerrigan and Orakpo as mentors for Tapp we have no doubt that his move is in good hands.

Hail to the Redskins and welcome home, Darryl!

On Wednesday, the Redskins re-signed one of their core players of the last seven years, veteran defensive end Kedric Golston.

The 2006 sixth-round pick out of the University of Georgia appeared in all 16 games for the 2012 NFC East champions, providing quality depth behind starters Stephen Bowen, Jarvis Jenkins, and Adam Carriker.

After signing his contract, Golston took to Twitter (@Golston64) to thank the fans and celebrate his return to the Burgundy and Gold:

Just finished signing new 3 yr deal with the Skins. Excited about the future!—
Kedric Golston (@Golston64) March 13, 2013

We are excited for your future here in the DMV too, Kedric!

As a rookie, Golston burst onto the season and exceeded expectations that are usually placed on players drafted in the later rounds.

In his second career start, Golston had his best performance to date, recording six tackles and splitting a sack of Titans quarterback Vince Young with teammate Anthony Montgomery.

His 44 tackles and three passes defensed during his debut season are still career-highs. Golston, along with safety Reed Doughty, are the longest tenured players on a defense that has typicall been among the best in the league since their arrival.

Even though Golston hasn’t started a game since the 2010, he has been an integral part of the defensive line rotation, and provides the Redskins with depth at all three line positions.

In the critical showdown against the New York Giants on Monday Night Football this season, Golston shined bright, helping extract revenge for a bitter Week 7 defeat. He tied a season-high with four tackles–all in the first half–to help propel the team toward its first playoff appearance in five years.

With No. 64 back in the fold on defense, the Redskins have set up a tremendous rotation for one of the best units on defense. Training camp just got a little more interesting to watch.

.

Mother Nature graces the DMV with brisk winter breezes during the month of February, causing many to be slightly on the grouchy side at times as they wait for the flowers to bloom and for family beach vacation season to kick into gear.

Today, however, spirits among the masses seems to be a little more cheery than a usual day during the shortest month of the year. There’s been an increase in heart-shaped objects, bouquets of flowers, and people ignoring their beach-bod diets in favor of adding some chocolate to their routines.

It’s almost like there’s a feeling of love in the air.

Well folks that’s because today is Valentine’s Day, the annual day of love!

Redskins Nation has a lot to love during this holiday as we are currently under blue skies, Punxsutawney Phil ( for those of you who don’t know, Phil is the famous groundhog of Groundhog Day) saw his shadow forecasting spring is on its way, and knowing that their favorite football team shocked the league this season claiming the NFC East title may be the sweetest treat of all!

The Redskins themselves have caught the love bug and have been spending their day with loved ones.

Find out what some of the players have been doing after being struck with Cupid’s arrow here:

Brian Orakpo is a nightmare for opposing quarterbacks, terrorizing them at every move and knocking them down at every chance he gets.

While Brian is one tough man on the gridiron, believe it or not, he is quiet the gentle soul off of it. While he can corral multiple lineman en route to the pigskin, he may be facing his biggest task yet: taking on a second child with wife Tura.

Happy Valentines Day to my preggo wife Tura can't wait for number 2 due this summer http://t.co/eXFYl0Mq—
Brian Orakpo (@rak98) February 14, 2013

Safety Jordan Bernstine is one of the most passionate players on the field for the Redskins, however, he is searching for love off of it and has taken an old school approach to see if anyone will be his.

So is it too late to ask someone to be your Valentine?? I want to do it old school. "Will you be my valentine…YES…NO… Circle one"😍😍—
jordan bernstine (@JBernstine) February 14, 2013

Sidenote–If you do decided you want to be Jordan’s Valentine, he’s asking for a little something in return.

Happy Vday ppl!😍😍 have a good one. And remember, It IS ok for women to get guys gifts too. Just sayin.lol—
jordan bernstine (@JBernstine) February 14, 2013

Linebacker London Fletcher has created a massive following after signing with the Redskins in 2o07. The heart and soul of the defense hasn’t missed a game in years and always shows his love for this team and city, never giving up no matter what adverse conditions stand in his way.

The loving father and husband is thankful for the support he has gotten from all of the females in Redskins Nation and has a little message for them!

The Super Bowl has come and gone which means it’s time to turn our attention to April’s NFL Draft. So join us as we begin to focus on certain team needs and start to analyze the prospects preparing to make the jump from college to the pros. The next few months should be a fun ride.

This year’s draft is as important as ever for the Redskins to build on this year’s success. It’s important to add key pieces so that the team can continue to make positive strides without taking any steps backwards.

There are many question marks that the team will need to address.

Who will the Redskins select? Will they address the needs in the secondary? What’s the status of linebacker London Fletcher? Will Robert Griffin III be ready for training camp? These are all questions that will slowly, but surely, be answered over the course of the next few months.

And if you all are wondering what moves are brewing at Redskins Park or if there is a magical potion being concocted to help address the void left by football, sorry. We have no secret ingredient to remedy the heartache that the offseason brings.

Coaches are studying game film as the process of preparing the playbooks for next year starts. The scouts are watching tape of college players as they start to finalize their draft and free agent boards. And decisions are being made as the coaches decide which players will return before the free agency period begins on March 12.

If you are coming to us for insider info, we don’t have any top secret information to divulge just yet, but what I can tell you is that we are feeling the same effects as you, a sense of helplessness that is the void left by football.

Problem solved if games were year around. Unfortunately, the players association probably would never agree to that deal. But, I digress.

We’re bringing you yet another Social Media Weekly Spotlight, including a message from LB London Fletcher for Dallas fans! You’ll like what the savvy vet had to say.

It’s pretty safe to say that Fletcher voiced (or tweeted) the feeling of Redskins fans everywhere earlier this week. Raise your hand if you’ve ever started a good anti-Dallas chant, or slapped a ‘Honk if you Hate Dallas’ sign on your car bumper, or told off a local Dallas fans – words that would have your mother washing your mouth out with soap.

The fact is that Dallas fans are everywhere like mosquitos on a summer night in the bayou; pests that you can’t get rid of.

Well, Fletcher had a message for Cowboys fans that would make you proud:

1 word for Dallas fans who live in DC…MOVE! #HTTR—
London Fletcher (@LFletcher59) February 08, 2013

There’s only one possible response for that: Hail to the Redskins!

If you don’t already follow DE Adam Carriker on Twitter, he’s a great follow. The sixth-year pro always delivers a good laugh.

Admit it… We don't call Gatorade by its flavors, we call it by its colors.—
Adam Carriker (@AdamCarriker94) February 07, 2013

If you play your heart out for what your jersey says on the front, everyone will remember what the jersey says on the back.—
Adam Carriker (@AdamCarriker94) February 05, 2013

Thanks for the words of wisdom, Adam. We look forward to your return next year!

Moving on to Redskins Birthday’s this week: QB Robert Griffin III (Tuesday, February 12th), C Will Montgomery (Wednesday, February 13th).

A Redskins’ wife has given birth for the second time this week.

First, it was offensive lineman Tyler Polumbus and wife, Elizabeth, whose daughter, Lydia, was born on Monday.

Early this morning, it was defensive end Adam Carriker, whose wife, Angie, gave birth to their daughter, Trinity.

Carriker tweeted this out this morning:

The newest edition to the Carriker family is here. Say hello to Trinity! http://t.co/rXCNgTwT—
Adam Carriker (@AdamCarriker94) November 01, 2012

Like Polumbus, Carriker also gave everybody a heads up via Twitter that his wife was about to go into labor. He tweeted this Wednesday night at 7:57 p.m.:

At the hospital, about to become a father for the 3rd time. #Blessed #HopingEverythingGoesWell—
Adam Carriker (@AdamCarriker94) October 31, 2012

This makes child No. 3 for Adam and Angie — well, it’s Angie’s fourth child, if you count Adam.

Carriker — who suffered a season-ending injury to his quad-tendon Week 2 against the St. Louis Rams — has devoted several tweets this year to how protective he’ll be of his daughter. This one, for example, was a classic:

Uh oh. Watch out.

CHIME IN: How about a round of congratulations to Adam and Angie Carriker on the birth of their daughter, Trinity? Feel free to comment below.

(Hint: this is not the photo mentioned in the headline. Read on for more…)

Washington Redskins defensive end Adam Carriker is a man of his word.

He has recently struck up a friendship with one of his idols, wrestling legend Goldberg, and the two placed a friendly bet with each other about last Sunday’s game between the Atlanta Falcons and the Washington Redskins.

Goldberg — himself a former defensive end with the Atlanta Falcons — agreed to wear a Redskins jersey if Washington won, while Carriker — who co-hosts a wrestling/football radio show, 4th & Pain — agreed to dress up like Goldberg if Atlanta won.

Well, the Falcons ended up winning 24-17 to move to 5-0, and we’ll let Carriker tell you his philosophy:

I always honor my bets.—
Adam Carriker (@AdamCarriker94) October 11, 2012

So, Carriker took to the Redskins locker room — oiled up and speedo and all — and took the following photo (warning: this isn’t for the faint of heart and definitely not for you currently eating your breakfast:)

Click here to see the “exclusive” TMZ.com photo.

…Did you toss your cookies?

I say good for Carriker for following through on the bet. He had season-ending surgery after suffering a quad tendon tear Week 1 vs. the New Orleans Saints, so I’m sure it’s nice for him to have things like this — and his radio show — to stay away from the monotony of post-surgery rehab and workouts.

By the way, Goldberg, if you might remember, recently told Carriker and his fellow 4th & Pain co-host, Chuck Carroll, that he had once played under current Redskins defensive coordinator Jim Haslett on the Sacramento Surge of the World League of American Football, which, in 1992, won the world championship.

Goldberg, a star defensive end at Georgia, was selected by the Los Angeles Rams in the 11th round of the 1990 NFL Draft. After playing with the Rams in 1990 and with the Surge from 1991 to 1992, Goldberg was picked up by the Atlanta Falcons, where he played from 1992 to 1994.

He then suffered a career-threatening abdomen injury, and although he was picked up by the Carolina Panthers in the 1995 NFL Expansion Draft, Goldberg never played another down in the league.

He went on to do alright for himself, however, becoming a two-time WWE world champion and one of the most popular wrestlers of all time.

Adam Carriker and Chuck Carroll see a lot of similarities between the madness that goes on throughout an NFL game and the madness exhibited weekly in WWE rings.

So Carriker and Carroll — who co-host “4th & Pain,” a weekly wrestling/football radio show — decided to collide the two worlds, with the help of the WWE.

The duo on Wednesday presented Redskins wide receiver Pierre Garçon with the first-ever “4th & Pain Championship Belt Player of the Week,” which includes an actual, real-life WWE title belt that will rotate from locker to locker throughout the season.

And trust me, folks — this belt is the real deal. I got a chance to pick it up today, and this baby is heavy — err, I mean, I didn’t have trouble lifting it, but I could see how it could cause troubles for a much-weaker person.

Carroll said the WWE caught wind of “4th & Pain” and approached the show’s co-hosts about what it could do to promote the show and the team.

“We said we wanted to give away a little something-something to the player of the week, but we want to do it pro-wrestling style,” Carroll said. “It’s very cool. I mean, it’s not a sponsor deal at all. They’re doing this because they like the show; they believe in the show.”

Carriker, a veteran defensive lineman for the Redskins, said prior to Wednesday that he had only seen a real WWE title belt from a distance.

“When I’ve gone to events, I’ve seen people with a title belt, and I’m just like, ‘Wow, those are really nice belts,’ but I’ve never gotten to hold one,” Carriker said. “So it was really cool when they sent this because I was like, ‘Wow, this is the real deal.’”

Carroll said Garçon earned this week’s belt because his performance in Sunday’s 40-32 Redskins win over the host Saints largely went unnoticed after the receiver left the game in the first quarter with a foot injury.

At the time of his exit, Garçon had already caught four catches for 109 yards and an 88-yard touchdown.

Carroll said Garçon earned the belt over running back Alfred Morris and quarterback Robert Griffin III.

“We thought Alfred [Morris] did a pretty good job; we thought that Robert [Griffin III] did an amazing job,” Carroll said. “But Pierre’s going unrecognized because he had to leave the game early, and, you know, as I joked with him on ’4th & Pain’ this week, I said, ‘If you had stayed in the game, on that pace you would’ve had 400 receiving yards.’”

Carroll said “4th & Pain” decided not to instead give the belt to long snapper Nick Sundberg, who played an entire flawless second half with a broken left arm.

“We had Nick on, and Nick actually threw a little insult at me,” Carroll said. “He told Adam, ‘I really like your show, but I can’t stand Chuck’s voice.’ And so, with that, I said there’s just no way. We’ll give him a tough-guy award, but he’s just not getting the belt.”

Here’s a “4th & Pain” video with Garçon after he was presented the belt:
