Friday, May 15: Lorenzo Alexander Sponsors A Free Football Camp

Posted by Matt Terl on May 15, 2009 – 9:35 am

If you’re a high school or junior high school football player in the DC Metro area and you’ve always wanted to work out with members of the Washington Redskins, Lorenzo Alexander has some good news for you. Alexander — through his ACES Foundation, and alongside the Northern Virginia Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Grace Covenant Church — will be sponsoring the All Pro Sports Camp on June 6th and 7th.

This is a completely free two-day event featuring position drills, agility and strength training, and a chance to work with Alexander, Kedric Golston, Chris Wilson, and Derrick Dockery. “Those are the guys who have confirmed so far,” Alexander told me, “but I think there’ll be some more as well.”

Tuesday, April 28: Golfing With Redskins

Posted by Matt Terl on April 28, 2009 – 3:41 pm

I stayed at Redskins Park for the Brian Orakpo press conference yesterday, so I missed the reported mobbing of Jason Campbell by the local media. It sounded like quite the scene, with Campbell surrounded and fielding endless questions in his characteristic classy manner, and his teammates staying rock solid in support of him. Kelli Johnson’s piece for Comcast SportsNet gives a good overview of that angle on things.

By the time I arrived at the Lowes Island Club golf course for the Jason Campbell Leukemia Golf Classic, the players had scattered across 36 holes of golf and were just generally having a good time hacking away at the ball and enjoying the warm weather.

As the name suggests, the tournament benefits the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, and from that standpoint yesterday was an unmitigated success. The event raised over $225,000 for the group, a marked jump from last year’s successful effort. Campbell, by all accounts, actually helps to plan the event, attending meetings and working with the group, not just lending his name.

There were two things worthy of special note yesterday.

One of them is vastly more important than the other, so that’s where I’ll start. Read more »

Redskins Linemen Make The Gossip Blogs, Sort Of

Posted by Matt Terl on March 31, 2009 – 2:22 pm

So defensive linemen Chris Wilson and Lorenzo Alexander went out to the Wizards/Pistons game on Saturday night, got some solid courtside seats to watch Gilbert Arenas make his triumphant return. (Can a player make a triumphant return if his team doesn’t precisely triumph in his comeback game? Anyhow….)

Wilson and Alexander are nice guys and solid role players with the Redskins, but they’re not exactly the typical candidates for the gossip sites. Still, there they were, plastered all over venerable celebrity-watching site Bossip.com the next day.

That’s Chris Wilson underneath the yellow arrow there.

Now, it’s possible, based on the framing and composition of that picture, that maybe — just MAYBE — Bossip was actually more interested in actor/dancer/renaissance man/producer Columbus Short. Which is fair enough, because Wilson felt similarly himself.

Were you star-struck by this coincidence of seating?

Wilson: “I was a little … not star-struck, really, but I was just like, ‘Man, that’s Columbus Short! I was just talking about him being one of my favorite actors.’”

Lorenzo Alexander Goes Super Bowl Shopping

Posted by Matt Terl on February 3, 2009 – 5:13 pm

In my imagination, football players don’t go grocery shopping. They have People who go grocery shopping for them, and if they do have to run into the store themselves, they are immediately swarmed by thousands of rabid autograph-seeking fans.

As has so often been the case since I started working here, my imagination proves to be completely wrong.

Following on the relative success of my trip to help Todd Yoder pick up his kids from daycare, I asked Lorenzo Alexander if I could go grocery shopping with him. I expected it to be a complicated negotiation, something that would require me to hang around at the ready for a last-minute phonecall. Instead he shrugged, said sure, and told me that he and his wife would be making a Costco trip later in the week.

The assigned date arrived, and … well, Alexander and his wife were good company, and their daughter was adorable, but ultimately it was a trip to the bulk warehouse store just like any other. Things were purchased in enormous quantities, shopping lists were amiably ignored, and many samples were consumed.

The video is after the jump, so you can see for yourselves. It reveals such secrets as WHERE Lorenzo Alexander watched the Super Bowl, WHO he hangs out with, and the shocking truth of WHAT vitamin enriched supplement he favors. Read more »
