Area Firefighters Excited For 2012 Season

Posted by Andrew Walker on July 25, 2012 – 8:45 am

Washington Redskins defensive back DeJon Gomes talks with Montgomery County (Maryland) firefighter Gary Mann prior to Tuesday’s 80th Anniversary Thank You Tour stop in Silver Spring, Md. Capt. Thomas Foster is shown behind Mann.

——

On Sundays they’re just like you or me: they enjoy sitting in front of the TV with their Redskins on and their snacks within an arm’s reach away.

The only difference? In the blink of an eye, their focus could turn from cheering for a Brian Orakpo sack to saving lives.

The firefighters at Montgomery County (Maryland) Fire and Rescue Station 18 know this feeling all too well.

A group of Washington Redskins cheerleaders and current and former players found themselves trying to keep up with dozens of young children at play on Tuesday.

The Redskins’ 80th Anniversary Thank You Tour was at Silver Spring, Md., as part of an NFL “Play 60″ event, a league campaign encouraging children to be active for at least 60 minutes a day to help reverse the trend of childhood obesity.

80th Tour Stop A Homecoming For Royster

Posted by Andrew Walker on June 9, 2012 – 10:26 am

Being able to play professional football just an hour away from his hometown gives Redskins’ running back Evan Royster plenty of opportunities to visit his old stomping grounds.

So it comes as no surprise that Friday’s Redskins 80th Anniversary Thank You Tour stop at Westfield High School in Chantilly, Va. – Royster’s alma mater – was a pleasant homecoming for the second-year running back.

Redskins Superfans Get Hugs From Bruce

Posted by Brian Tinsman on June 8, 2012 – 8:39 pm

During today’s 80th road show stop at Naval station Norfolk, the Redskins were introduced to Freda Smith and Yvonne Livingston–unapologetic Redskins fans and “lifelong BFF’s” (best friends forever).

Freda and Yvonne told me that they were the first fans to arrive outside the theater this morning, lining up outside the building at 8 a.m. for an 11 a.m. show.  They first made their presence known when they entered the C-9 theater, singing ‘Hail to the Redskins’ and celebrating the Burgundy and Gold.  The real fun began when emcee Amanda Mitchell opened the floor up to any fans that wanted to come up on stage and interact with the players.

Redskins players and general manager Bruce Allen were given an up-close look at how big of fans they actually were.  Enjoy: Read more »

Redskins Tour Aboard The U.S.S. Mahan

Posted by Brian Tinsman on June 8, 2012 – 8:30 pm

The second stop of today’s Redskins 80th Anniversary bus tour took them on a tour of the U.S.S. Mahan in the Norfolk Naval Yard.

It was an awesome experience to climb aboard a Navy cruiser, especially one that had only recently returned from a tour off the coast of Africa.  The executive officer of the ship briefly briefed the team on the details of the ship and the duties of the sailor that call it home for months at a time.

Almost every player in attendance had military ties with family and friends–most notably fullback Darrel Young, whose brother is currently serving in the Army.  You won’t hear him yelling ‘Go Navy, Beat Army’ any time soon, but he has a certain affection for the work of soldiers and sailors alike.

There were some pretty amazing shots from the tour, and also a few opportunities to goof around.  Check out the full photo album, below: Read more »

The Redskins 80th Anniversary bus tour visited loaded up and visited Norfolk Naval Base during the first leg of today’s Thank You Tour.  Norfolk is the biggest naval station in the world, and the reception at the C-9 theater was a great experience for the military personnel and Redskins alike.

General manager Bruce Allen was joined by cornerback DeAngelo Hall, linebacker Lorenzo Alexander, fullback Darrel Young, defensive linemen Chris Baker and Doug Worthington, alumni Roy Jefferson and Mike Nelms and the First Ladies of Football.

Here’s a snapshot of the Redskins reception at the theater: Read more »
