Posted by Gabe Hiatt on February 27, 2014 – 4:16 pm

Jay Gruden has a fire in his belly, but it’s not necessarily a raging bonfire befitting of a beachside bacchanalia. It can be a steady, slow-burning flame like a pilot light.

Jay Gruden reached another head coaching milestone Friday at Lucus Oil Stadium.

Gruden addressed a nationwide conglomerate of reporters at the 2014 NFL Scouting Combine, following the likes of Bill Belichick and Johnny Manziel at the podium for his first turn representing the Washington Redskins in Indianapolis.

The head coach talked about his respect for Defensive Coordinator Jim Haslett, how he and Sean McVay will integrate familiar elements of the Redskins offense and whom he sees as Washington’s top priority in free agency.

Jay Gruden Watches All The Tape

Posted by Gabe Hiatt on February 21, 2014 – 10:21 am

JAY

Jay Gruden needed to know what he was inheriting.

So the rookie head coach watched all of Washington’s game film from 2013. Then he watched practice footage. Then he watched training camp clips.

“There’s a lot of work to do, and it’s a grind right now but it’s a lot of fun, and I’m fortunate to be in this position.” Gruden said in an exclusive interview with Larry Michael and Redskins.com at the 2014 NFL Scouting Combine.

“I try to go back and see… how they practiced during the season, during the offseason, during training camp, obviously, in Richmond. So I try to evaluate everybody, how they practice, how they perform in games, and it’s been good. We’ve got a lot of good players on this team that are coming back. It’s a matter of getting the ones we want back re-signed and adding some new pieces to the puzzle.”

Watch Gruden talk about his grind, evaluating free agents and why he wanted to retain coaches from the previous staff in the video below. Read more »
