Rev Redskin Pays Tribute To Cooley

Posted by Andrew Walker on August 29, 2012 – 1:47 pm

Rev Redskin is back for his weekly message of hope and faith as his favorite team, the Washington Redskins, prepare for their fourth and final preseason game of the 2012 season.

Within his message today:

- Thankfulness for the service of tight end Chris Cooley, who was released yesterday after eight-plus seasons with the team.

- And an inspirational message for the Redskins and their fans as tonight’s game gets underway in just a few hours at FedExField.

Here’s the video from the Rev:

Redskins Players Ready For The Bucs

Posted by Andrew Walker on August 29, 2012 – 1:37 pm

The Washington Redskins take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers tonight at FedExField in both team’s preseason finales.

There’s lots on the line tonight for several Redskins players — namely, a spot on the final 53-man roster. Though the starting line-ups are all-but-secured by now, there’s still many backup positions up for grabs — and tonight’s game is expected to go a long way towards securing those spots.

The players, obviously, are amped up and ready to go for tonight’s game, which kicks off at 7 p.m. Here’s some of their pregame tweets:

Donate To Operation Backpack Tonight

Posted by Andrew Walker on August 29, 2012 – 11:56 am

Tonight’s preseason finale against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers is far from just a final opportunity for some of the players on the Redskins to show their worth before final roster cuts are made.

It’s also your final opportunity as fans to donate school supplies for one of the best causes around.

The Redskins Charitable Foundation and Volunteers of America Chesapeake have joined forces to support ‘Operation Backpack,’ an initiative that collects and distributes backpacks filled with school supplies to children living in homeless shelters throughout the Washington, D.C., metro area.

‘Operation Backpack’ began in late July with a big push during the Redskins’ training camp in Ashburn, Va., and is running through next week.

“One of the most devastating consequences of homelessness is the impact it has on children’s education,” said President/CEO of Volunteers of America Chesapeake, Russell Snyder. “The goal of Volunteers of America Chesapeake’s Operation Backpack is to ensure that the homeless children we serve return to school prepared to be successful.”

Backpacks, school supplies and/or monetary donations can be dropped off at tonight’s game at FedExField. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Tuesday’s Redskins Practice Video

Posted by Andrew Walker on August 28, 2012 – 12:27 pm

(AP photo)

The Washington Redskins have had little time to relish Saturday’s preseason win over the Indianapolis Colts before getting ready for their next game.

Four days after that 30-17 win, the team plays host to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at 7 p.m. Wednesday at FedExField in both teams’ preseason finales.

The Redskins — with a trimmed roster of just 75 players, compared to 90 the day before — were practicing Tuesday at their Ashburn, Va., facility to prepare for that NFC matchup.

La Canfora: Griffin III-Luck Met The Hype

Posted by Andrew Walker on August 27, 2012 – 1:00 pm

(AP photo)

CBS NFL Insider Jason La Canfora certainly knows the Washington Redskins organization, having covered the team for five seasons as the beat writer for the Washington Post.

La Canfora was at Saturday’s Washington Redskins-Indianapolis Colts preseason game — you know, the one in which rookie quarterbacks and top draft picks Robert Griffin III and Andrew Luck squared off for the first time as professionals — and thought that although the Griffin III-Luck factor brought a lot of hype for one preseason game, the two young quarterbacks lived up to the buildup.

La Canfora was nice enough to spend a few minutes with the Redskins Blog after the game and talk about Griffin III-Luck, as well as the state of the Redskins moving forward. The complete audio of that interview is below, but here are a few snippets that I found interesting:

Morgan’s TD Highlights Homecoming Win

Posted by Andrew Walker on August 26, 2012 – 7:30 am

(AP photo)

Joshua Morgan grew up in the shadows of Washington, D.C.’s RFK Stadium and dreamed of one day catching a touchdown pass as a member of the Washington Redskins.

That dream came true Saturday.

Morgan — who signed with the Redskins this offseason after four seasons with the San Francisco 49ers – made a leaping touchdown grab in the third quarter on a 13-yard pass from quarterback Rex Grossman, as Washington defeated the Indianapolis Colts 30-17 in the Redskins’ 2012 preseason home opener at FedExField.

Morgan – a H.D. Woodson High School product who went on to star at Virginia Tech – said he was thrilled to get the TD in front of about 50 family and friends at Saturday’s game.

WAS-IND: Fourth Quarter Conclusions

Posted by Andrew Walker on August 25, 2012 – 7:12 pm

(AP photo)

The Washington Redskins continued to roll in the fourth quarter of today’s game against the Indianapolis Colts, and came away with a 30-17 win in front of 60,047 fans at the 2012 FedExField opener.

It was an impressive all-around effort by the Redskins, who got some grit and attitude from its first-, second- and third-teamers on offense, defense and special teams.

For the second straight week, a Redskins backup quarterback had a strong second-half preseason performance.

Last week it was rookie Kirk Cousins against the Chicago Bears — who nearly rallied the Redskins to victory after trailing by 20 points.

This week, it was veteran Rex Grossman, who ended his day against the Colts (1-2) completing all eight of his passes for 127 yards and two touchdowns. He had a perfect 158.3 QB rating.

WAS-IND: Third Quarter Thoughts

Posted by Andrew Walker on August 25, 2012 – 6:23 pm

(AP photo)

As anticipated, a majority of the Redskins’ starters on offense and defense played into the second half for the first time this preseason in today’s game against the Indianapolis Colts.

After an action-packed first half that featured the showdown between highly-touted rookie quarterbacks Robert Griffin III and Andrew Luck, the Redskins took over in the third quarter, which ended with the home team leading 23-7.

Also, say what you want about the hype of today’s game between Griffin III and Luck, but the star of the game has actually been Redskins rookie running back Alfred Morris, who eclipsed 100 yards rushing on the Redskins first drive of the third quarter.

Video: Clinton Portis At Today’s Game

Posted by Andrew Walker on August 25, 2012 – 5:36 pm

Clinton Portis, the Redskins great running back who announced his retirement from football on Thursday, caught up with the Redskins Blog during the first and second quarters of today’s preseason matchup between the Redskins and the Indianapolis Colts.

We just happened to have good timing when talking with Portis — it was smack dab in the middle of the Redskins’ first touchdown drive of the game.

That touchdown, by the way, was scored by rookie running back Alfred Morris, who grew up idolizing Portis, the Redskins’ second-leading rusher in franchise history who on Friday was elected one of the 80 Greatest Players in team history.

Here’s the interview with Portis, who talks about the Robert Griffin III-Andrew Luck hype, the Redskins’ defense, his memories of playing at FedExField, his attitude when it came to being a great blocking back and much more:
