The annual Washington Redskins Homecoming festivities are far more than what is seen before and during the game on Sunday.

It’s an opportunity for the former Redskins greats to visit old friends at the facility in the week leading up to the game and also do a little community work while they’re at it.

This time, the Redskins Alumni helped build a playground in Washington, D.C. That night, they met again for the Homecoming Alumni Reception — a night full of memories and good friends. Oh yeah, and football.

Arrington Proud Of His Redskins Roots

LaVar Arrington has never been shy about letting his feelings known; so when he says something, he means it.

Arrington — whose “10 For 80″ distinction by the Redskins cements his name among the greatest players in team history — spoke to the Redskins Blog Saturday night at the Redskins Homecoming Alumni Reception in Washington, D.C. Arrington was one of more than 150 Redskins alumni to visit over the weekend.

“It’s very humbling,” Arrington said. “It’s just nice to be in the midst, nice to be a part of something like this. I’m happy and elated to be here — just elated.”

EXCLUSIVE VIDEO: ‘Skins Take The Field

Posted by Andrew Walker on November 4, 2012 – 12:38 pm

Several awesome moments have unraveled at today’s Redskins 80th Anniversary Homecoming festivities, but none of which has been better so far than Pedro “Pete” Taylor, Sean Taylor’s father, joining the Redskins defensive backs and safeties in their pre-game ritual prior to taking the field.

Sean Taylor is one of the “10 For 80″ honorees being celebrated today as one of the 80 Greatest Redskins of All-Time.

Also included in the video above are two cool exchanges — one between tight end Chris Cooley and “10 For 80″ honoree LaVar Arrington, and another between Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan and “10 For 80″ honoree Clinton Portis.

Also included is linebacker London Fletcher’s pre-game speech.

Enjoy.

Redskins 10 For 80 Profiles Galore

Posted by Andrew Walker on August 24, 2012 – 6:06 pm

There was lots to celebrate Friday at the Washington Redskins’ 51st-annual Welcome Home Luncheon, but certainly the most historic aspect of the day was the unveiling of the team’s “10 For 80″ campaign, in which Redskins fans and a blue-ribbon panel selected the 10 players of the organization to join the 70 greatest Redskins named in 2002.

And what a list it is.

10 For 80: Sean Taylor

Note: The Redskins Blog will be profiling several former players, coaches and team officials eligible to be voted by you, the fans, in this year’s Redskins 80th Anniversary celebration. To vote for Sean Taylor or your 10 other all-timers to join the already-chosen list of the 70 Greatest Redskins, go to http://www.redskins80th.com/

As a beginning note, I couldn’t possibly begin to try to put the life and career of Sean Taylor into a few paragraphs.

So I turn to the writing of former Redskins.com writer Gary Fitzgerald, who wrote this piece shortly after Taylor died in November 2007 after suffering a fatal gunshot wound in his Miami home:

10 For 80: Clinton Portis

Posted by Andrew Walker on July 26, 2012 – 9:16 am

Note: The Redskins Blog will be profiling several former players, coaches and team officials eligible to be voted by you, the fans, in this year’s Redskins 80th Anniversary celebration. To vote for Clinton Portis or your 10 other all-timers to join the already-chosen list of the 70 Greatest Redskins, go to http://www.redskins80th.com/

If the only memories Clinton Portis left Redskins fans with had to do with his colorful character — which included his alter-egos like Sheriff Gonna Getcha, The Mad Scientist, Kid Bro Sweets, Dr. I Don’t Know and Southeast Jerome — then that alone would probably make him one of the most beloved team members of all time.

But the fact that Portis was an even better running back than he was an entertainer — ending his Redskins career as the second-leading rusher in franchise history — then his legacy as one of the all-time greats can certainly be considered sealed.

Time Running Out For ’10 For 80′ Fan Vote

Bernard Shaw

—-

Legendary retired CNN broadcaster Bernard Shaw was at Redskins Park Monday doing some early voice-over work for the upcoming Redskins’ 80th Anniversary show “10 For 80,” which chronicles the 80 greatest Redskins in the team’s illustrious history.

And let me tell you — it was awesome to hear Shaw’s glorious pipes in action.

But don’t let Shaw’s early work fool you, Redskins fans. You still have six days remaining to vote for your 10 greatest Redskins players and team officials to add to the already-compiled list of the 70 greatest Redskins of all-time.
