Former head coach of the Eagles, Rams and Chiefs, Dick Vermeil was interested in race cars much like legendary Redskin head coach Joe Gibbs.

Vermeil stopped by Redskins Radio Thursday where he remembered his time coaching against Gibbs and his respect for the three-time Super Bowl winner.

“I haven’t seen Joe since we coached against him — I was with the Chiefs and he was running the Redskins,” Vermeil said. “I bumped into him once since then. You know, we were friends then, we’re friends now, and I got to know Joe real well when I was in broadcasting when I left the Eagles. You know, I was real good to Joe: I gave him his first win in the NFL. So, from then on, he wrote his own record book. But I have great respect and admiration for him.”

Vermeil then divulged more into their relationship.

“I really got to know him when I was broadcasting, and would sit in, go to practices, sit in on meetings with him; then meet with him after, just he and I, and discuss careers, coaching, pressures, family — everything — before he ever got involved in auto racing,” he said. “Though I knew he had the interest, because he was raised much like I was, around a little garage and people were interested in cars and race cars. But there’s only one Joe Gibbs — that’s why he’s in the Hall of Fame.”

Pro Football Hall of Famer Barry Sanders stopped by Redskins Radio today and discussed his playing career.

Naturally, he was asked about his memories regarding the 1992 NFC Championship, a game the Redskins ultimately won to propel them to their third Super Bowl victory.

“First of all, I had such high hopes coming into that game,” Sanders said about facing the Redskins. “I was so excited. But that was a great team. That was a great team across the board, and obviously coached by a Hall of Fame coach. But you don’t see teams like that anymore — just a dominant team, and they were certainly the best team that year, and they ran through — I think it was — the Bills in the Super Bowl. It wasn’t even close.”

Coincidentally, the Lions season was bookended by losses to the Redskins, the first a 45-0 lopsided night game at RFK Stadium in which Sanders never played.

“I didn’t play in the game,” he said. “And never did we think that we’d be back there for the championship game, because that was my third year, and, of course, we didn’t have that rich tradition and we didn’t know what kind of team we had. But, lo and behold, we end up back there for the championship game, and I’m pretty sure Mark Rypien was quarterback, and just a slew of receivers. And the defense — that’s what I remember most. Matt Millen and Charles Mann, I believe, and just a host of guys. Just a solid team across the board, and looking back, it’s actually kind of fun.”

Quarterback Robert Griffin III joined ESPN Radio last night to talk about a variety of things, including the Super Bowl.

He reflected on the relationship and longevity between Tom Brady and Bill Belichick, preparing for their sixth Super Bowl appearance together.

“These two guys I’ve had the opportunity to talk with, and guys that have been great players and great for their team,” Griffin III said. “It just goes to show you the longevity of Tom Brady with Bill Belichick and their belief in him. How hard they work, and we were able to see that, obviously, firsthand, just how efficient they can be. It’s something that you want to have, and Tom’s a good guy as well.”

Griffin III then compared the duo’s style with Russell Wilson’s playmaking and scrambling ability, commenting on the trust his teammates have in his ability.

“With Russell, he comes with an offense that might not be exactly the same as Tom Brady and Bill Belichick,” he said. “They run it a different way, they allow Russell to be more creative and make plays for them down the field. [Seattle has] one of the greatest scramble drill teams in the league – broken play, second-reaction play, whatever you want to call it. They do a great job of that.

“I think it just comes with the organizational support they both have as well to be the players that they are, to understand that, ‘This is our guy no matter what.’ And I think the last game with the Packers shows that more than anything. When a guy goes out and throws four interceptions and then leads you to victory, I think that guy knows in the back of his head that his entire team has his back, that the entire organization has his back.”

Griffin III believes “that’s important” to have that kind of support.

“I think it’s been the same way for Tom Brady,” he said. “So I take bits and pieces of their game, but I also understand the situation that they’re in and try to take that as well and know, ‘This is how you build a winner, this is how you build a family-like atmosphere.’ And that’s what we’re trying to do with the Redskins, and that’s what I want to be a part of.”

Jackson Jeffcoat is returning to his old stomping ground this weekend.

The University of Texas’ Co-Op tweeted out that they’re “so pumped” to have the current Redskin and former Longhorn on campus this weekend.

In that tweet was the link to a video, shot during the 2013 season, where the cameras followed Jeffcoat around as he showed what it’s like to balance athletics and academics.

While the video is a little bit lengthy, it gives some insight into how difficult it is to have so much going on at such a young age.

Jeffcoat appeared in 40 games with 33 starts at the University of Texas.

As a freshman, he was named honorable mention Big 12 Defensive Freshman of the Year after posting 15 tackles, six tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks.

During a highly productive senior season, Jeffcoat earned All-American honors and became the first Longhorn to win the Ted Hendricks Award – given to college football’s top defense end – since current Redskins Pro Bowl linebacker Brian Orakpo. In total, he recorded 86 tackles, 13 sacks and 19 quarterback pressures.

The headline sounds a little bizarre considering Shakespeare died in 1616 and George Starke and his fellow Hogs weren’t pushing around defensive lineman until the 1980’s, but lifelong Redskins fan Nicholas Long sent an interesting tidbit about the two to Larry Michael, Voice of the Redskins.

In a package sent to Michael including a t-shirt of Starke and Shakespeare together, Long wrote a letter explaining how the two are related.

You see Long’s daughter, Andrea, was organizing a summer festival called “Shakespeare on the Green” in 1992.

The idea behind “Shakespeare on the Green” was to promote theater and community events in the Nation’s Capital. But, just as many events similar face, the program needed funding help.

In steps Starke and the Redskins.

The idea of connecting “the world’s greatest writer with the world’s great offensive football line” sprung during a meeting.

Andrea eventually called Starke with the idea of combing Shakespeare and he. Starke loved the idea.

A limited edition t-shirt of the two was created and one of the few that weren’t sold is now with us here at Redskins Park in Loudoun County, Va.

While I’ve filled you in with some of the info, check out the complete story on “Redskins Nation,” which can be seen tonight at 5:30 p.m. and 11 p.m., and tomorrow at 7:30 a.m.

If you’ve kept up with any Redskins celebrity gossip, then you’re probably aware that Maryland native Benji Madden married actress Cameron Diaz earlier this month.

Well, last night they went to the Lakers-Wizards game, presumably so Madden could support his hometown team courtside.

As these things tend to happen, the newlywed couple was featured on the jumbotron in the middle of the game during a “Kiss Cam” segment. Read more »

Offensive guard and five-time All-Pro Jerry Kramer, best known for his time perfecting the “Packer Sweep” with legendary head coach Vince Lombardi in Green Bay, joined Redskins Radio today.

He spoke reverently about Lombardi, who coached the Redskins in the final year of his career, discussing how many people were quick to judge him without ever knowing the real man.

“I’ve been trying to explain to people…what he was like and about his commitment and his consistency and his principles,” Kramer said. “Fairly, squarely, decently, by the rules, and judge a human being by his performance on the field and his contribution to the team. That’s how we judge guys. I think Coach Lombardi was a sensational human being.”

After roaming around the Super Bowl grounds, Redskins wide receiver Andre Roberts stopped by Redskins Radio this afternoon.

Roberts discussed his first year playing in a new organization and believes his second year with the Redskins will make him more comfortable.

“Being in Washington for the first year, it’s all new,” Roberts said. “New coaching staff, new players, new media, a new locker room, new weight room, everything. So it’s a little bit of a transition. You think it’s easier than it is but it’s just like coming into the NFL.

“Coming back this year, we should be a lot better with everything, and it should help us moving onto the next year.”

Roberts was also questioned about his preference regarding the inflation of footballs. Instead of picking a Super Bowl winner, he joked that he hopes both teams lose.
