2012 Unsung Heroes From Giants Rivalry
Posted by on May 21, 2013 – 2:20 pm
In continuing to expand on the Redskins deeply rooted rivalry with the New York Giants, let’s take a look at some of the unsung heroes from the two tightly contested NFC East matchups in 2012.
While the Burgundy and Gold would go 5-1 against their division foes en route to their first division title since 1999, the one blemish on their record was a 27-23 loss at the Giants in Week 7.
If it weren’t for a late touchdown, I would be writing about how the Redskins went undefeated in the division play.
With the Redskins 17-16 victory on Monday Night Football in Week 13 in mind as well, let’s take a look at some of the performers who names may have not been on website “player of the game” nomination lists, but were still influential.

Reliving Season Series With The Giants
Posted by on May 21, 2013 – 11:18 am
Just minutes after the New York Giants won their second Super Bowl in five years last February, “experts” across the nations quickly latched onto the Giants wagon in belief that they were going to win the NFC East and so forth in 2012.
Shoot some were predicting a .500 record between the two squads-with the Redskins going 3-13 to the Giants’ 13-3.
This was well before the Redskins got Robert Griffin III and Alfred Morris.
While the Burgundy and Gold’s lone loss in the NFC East last year was at the hands of Big Blue, the nail-bitter still had some memorable moments nonetheless.
So without further ado, here is a recap of the 2012 season series between the NFC East foes (with only one division champion in the end.)

Williams Used Trusty ‘Rock’ In Tournament

Last week the Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation sponsored a rock-paper-scissors tournament hosted by Playworks.
Playworks’ overarching mission is to improve the health and well-being of children through physical activity to include rock-paper-scissors.
Knowing the benefits the timeless hand game has had on himself and his family, Redskins running back and seasoned rock-paper-scissors player Keiland Williams threw his name into the hat to see if he was the best rock-paper-scissors player that day, but more importantly, to promote peaceful conflict resolution in schools.

Under The Radar Special Teams Ace

A few weeks ago when the Redskins announced the signing of 12 college free agents, most were enamored with the signing of former University of Florida stud lineman Xavier Nixon as he became a YouTube sensation in our Nation’s Capital.
Others were excited to see linebacker William Compton rejoining some of his Nebraska teammates in burgundy and gold.
Few, however, made mention of seldom known UConn prospect Nick Williams as the wide receiver didn’t record a single receiving touchdown.
Shame on you, though, for failing to look at his return numbers.

Redskins Social Media Weekly Spotlight
Posted by on May 20, 2013 – 11:47 amWelcome to your weekly Redskins Social Media Spotlight, where we highlight the trendy topics and social media campaigns going on this week in Redskins Nation. Check it out and make suggestions below.
If you missed it, make sure you go back and read last week’s spotlight. It looked at a little (non-serious) tiff between two roommates, Mother’s Day wishes from players to their Mom’s, tight end Logan Paulsen‘s mistaken identity and more!
But moving on to this week and what Redskins players are doing and saying in the socialsphere.
Organized Team Activities (OTAs) start today and that means one thing Redskins fans, football is back and the season is just around the corner. All of the players have returned to Redskins Park for three days of OTAs (Monday, Wednesday and Thursday). The exact practice time’s for the next two weeks of practice sessions has yet to be determined but, if we base it off of years prior, should have a somewhat similar look to this week’s sessions.
Here’s a basic overview of the schedule:
- First Week: May 20-23
- Second Week: May 28-30
- Third Week: June 3-6
So without further ado, we bring you this week’s Social Media Weekly Spotlight, stacked full with an inspirational quote from defensive lineman Jarvis Jenkins, an update on the progress of quarterback Robert Griffin III (from Griffin III himself), offensive tackle Tyler Polumbus visits RGIII in Texas, and safety Reed Doughty goes fly fishing with his son.

WAS-DAL: Five Things To Watch In 2013
Posted by on May 17, 2013 – 3:36 pmCircle your calendars.
The Redskins will head to Dallas on October 13th for a Week 6, NBC Sunday Night Football (8:30pm), clash before returning home to host Dallas in a Week 16 tilt at FedExField on December 22nd at 1pm (full schedule).
The burgundy and gold hit the bye week early this year in Week 5 which means that the Redskins will face the Cowboys following the bye. Considering that the Redskins are coached my Mike Shanahan and that Shanahan is currently 11-6 in games following bye weeks, there’s positive sign number one.
Remember last season following the Bye Week? It was a 31-6 thrashing of the Philadelphia Eagles and the beginning of a seven game winning streak.
Anyway, here are five things to watch for heading into next year’s matchups against Dallas.

Meet College Free Agent OT Tevita Stevens
Posted by on May 17, 2013 – 2:40 pmMeet undrafted college free agent offensive tackle Tevita Stevens. The 6’3” 300 pound product was born in Hemet, Calif. He attended the University of Utah where he starred as a four-year starter at both guard and center.
As a senior, the honorable mention All-Pac-12 recipient started all 12 games and played every snap (746 in total for those counting).
Beyond the field, Stevens excelled in the classroom earning recognition as a four-time academic all-conference player and first-team Academic All-Pac-12 in 2011 and 2012.
However, it might be his journey to the NFL that is the more intriguing story.

‘Top 100 Players of 2013′: Alfred Morris
Posted by on May 17, 2013 – 10:27 amWashington Redskins running back Alfred Morris, a rookie sixth round draft pick, was a long-shot to start the season. However, when it came time to strap on the pads Week 1 vs. New Orleans he was named the starter and quickly ascended as the team’s No. 1 feature back.
Setting out to prove his critics wrong, the rookie rushed for 1,613 yards on the ground which was good for second in the league behind only Adrian Peterson (NFL MVP). His 13 touchdowns ranked second in the NFL behind only three-time Pro Bowler and two-time All-Pro running back Arian Foster.
Named a Pro Bowl alternate, No. 46 stepped up to share the spotlight with fellow rookie and number two overall pick, Robert Griffin III, creating one of the best one-two punch tandems in the league.
