Mike Clark Discusses His Strategy With Players In The Weight Room

One of the things new strength and conditioning coach Mike Clark wants to continue doing with players is fueling their competitive drive.

In his newly arranged weight room, Clark’s aware that while lifting dumbbells and bench pressing can be a very individual battle, players only get better when their lifting routines come with extra incentives and group challenges.

“These guys are so competitive that they will compete in anything,” Clark said on “Redskins Nation.” “They’ll take a bet of which bird will fly off that wire first and when they lose they’ll get upset about it. So they will compete in everything. So we’ll measure not just weight on the bar, but we’ll also measure bar speed. They really get into that. How far you throw a med-ball, how high you jump. All these types of measures we’ll do, it will help them to train more intently because they are competing, which is really their sweet spot.”

Clark, who was inducted into the USA Strength and Conditioning Coaches Hall of Fame in 2003,  won’t be able to meet all of his players until April 20th. But, as he continues to study the roster, he’s already thinking about the message he wants to deliver upon the players’ arrivals.

“One of the main things I’ll tell them is if you are in this room, you’re a world-class athlete, and you need to train like one,” Clark said. “You need to train like one here, you need to eat like one, you need to sleep like one, you need to do everything in your life like you’re a world-class athlete. Their time playing in this game is very short. Make the most of it. Don’t leave anything to chance.”

Throwback Thursday Takes It Back To 1933

The Pro Football Hall of Fame took it way back for Throwback Thursday this afternoon, tweeting out a still image from a game between the Boston Braves (Washington Redskins) and Portsmouth Spartans (Detroit Lions) that took place on Oct. 15, 1933.

While the Braves would ultimately lose the game 13-0, it’s pretty cool to see shots like these circulating on the Internet more than 80 years later.

The 1933 season was the second in the franchise’s existence. Perhaps the most notable name on the roster that year was Cliff Battles, a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s class of 1968.

During the 1933 season, Battles rushed for 737 yards and three touchdowns. During his time with the franchise, he rushed for 3,511 yards and 23 touchdowns.

Brian Jacobs claims he has been a Redskins fan from birth, but he was “locked in for life” when former wide receiver Charley Taylor paid him visits as a seven year old.

“My stepfather had a boat in Dumphries, Va., a few docks down from Charley Taylor and he used to come to my house in Woodbridge,” Jacobs wrote to The Redskins Blog.

Jacobs, who has been going to games his whole life, used to be a season ticket holder. He still catches every game on television and still tries to make it to FedExField a few times each season.

“My relationship with sports is, I would die without Redskins football,” he wrote. “They are my life when I die I want to be buried with a Redskin jersey on.”

Since the mid-1990s, Jacobs has been channeling his love into a Redskins tribute room and has bought thousands of dollars worth of items. But, since he moved a few years back, he’s had to start from scratch, selling some of his memorabilia to take care of his kids in a new home in Hagerstown, Md.

As fate would have it, many years later Jacobs’ son would get to experience something similar to what he had.

In 2011, one of Jacobs’ all-time favorite players, another wide receiver, Gary Clark, came to his home, through a friend, in Frederick, Md., to spend a Saturday afternoon with his son and the rest of his family.

“I will always be thankful and my family and I will never forget him and his kindness,” wrote Jacobs, who also noted he appeared on television with Clark during a playoff game special in 2012. “And he is still a friend on [Facebook].”

“It’s always been great being a part of the best organization in football! #HTTR”

The Redskins’ first Super Bowl victory in 1983 captured — as is typically the case with championship runs — fans young and old.

Check out this diehard fan’s classic throwback photo (posted to the Facebook fan page “2014 Redskins Nation”) when his siblings and he were just little kids. The photo was taken on the cusp of the big game, as evidenced by their unique rhyming sign, which ends by knowing “Miami Gonna Lose.”

They were right.

Carried by running back John Riggins’ famous 4th and 1 rushing touchdown, the Redskins defeated the Dolphins, 27-17, earning the first of head coach Joe Gibbs’ three Lombardi Trophies.

It surely put the three kids from this photo into a frenzy.

As the 2012 season progressed, tight end Logan Paulsen’s beard kept growing. And growing. And growing.

Eventually, by the time the Redskins capped off a seven-game winning streak to capture the NFC East title, Paulsen’s beard was a few inches long.

While some might have thought it was some sort of fashion statement or maybe one of those superstitious sports things where you try not to change habits when you’re winning, Paulsen resisting the razor was for a completely different reason.

Washington Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins and running back Alfred Morris clearly aren’t anywhere near the Washington, D.C., area right now.

They’re in San Diego where on Wednesday evening, Cousins posted both a photo and video of a group — with Morris — and he learning to surf.

The video of one of Cousins’ attempts to get on the board can be seen here.

A few months back word got out that a biopic on famous rapper Tupac Shakur will be released sometime during the 2015 calendar year.

The movie will touch on his upbringing, climb to the center of the music world and a whole lot more.

While a specific release date is still yet unknown, we do know that Washington Redskins wide receiver DeSean Jackson will have some sort of role as he noted Wednesday evening on Instagram.

We’ll have more on the biopic and what Jackson will be doing soon.

Tampa Bay Storm Wish Jay Gruden A Happy Birthday

If you didn’t already know, today is head coach Jay Gruden’s birthday.

He received a lot of well wishes but none were more retro-stylish than one of his former team’s messages.

The Tampa Bay Storm of the Arena Football League gave Gruden a shout-out with a photo from their ArenaBowl victory in 1991, when the former quarterback led his team to a championship win, curiously wearing zubaz and all (they were an early 1990s trend).

To refresh, Gruden was part of the 1999 class inducted into the AFL Hall of Fame. As a quarterback, he won four championships for the Storm (1991, ’93, ’95-96), won league MVP in 1992 and ArenaBowl MVP in 1993. He’s also one of five coaches to win at least two ArenaBowls, doing so with the Orlando Predators.

Gruden won ArenaBowl V as a rookie, tossing a 35-yard touchdown pass to Stevie Thomas with 39 second left. He threw for three touchdowns in ArenaBowl VII and in ArenaBowl IX he ran for a score and threw four more.

Now, if only we could track down some burgundy and gold zubaz for a birthday gift.

This is by far the most colorfully adorned and sparkled logo you will find.

It’s unclear where exactly on the dress this exquisite design is located, but you can imagine it’s able to catch your eye anywhere from afar.

How many beads did it take to complete this and how long was spent applying each one?

The easy guesses? A lot and a long time, but completely well spent.

Imagine seeing this in the parking lot after walking out of a shopping center.

That was the case last night for one fan in Columbia, Md., who posted this photo to the Facebook fan page “Redskins Die Hard Members.”

For all intents and purposes, I’m not sure this vehicle is safe for the road considering the windows are plastered with all types of stickers. But for a moment, let’s pretend they don’t cause an issue for driving.

Just check out the gold rims, and if you squint, the burgundy logo details. Plus, look at the black patch No. 21 circle.

Last week we showcased on Facebook a Redskins motorcycle (see below). Which burgundy and gold mode of transportation would you rather be seen driving?
