Before Trent Murphy was drafted by the Washington Redskins in this past May’s NFL Draft, he was a consensus All-American at Stanford.

During his senior season, Murphy recorded an NCAA FBS-high 15 sacks to go along with 62 tackles (37 solo), two forced fumbles, six pass breakups and one blocked kick.

On Saturday when in attendance to watch his Cardinal defeat Nick Sundberg’s California Bears, Murphy got to see himself on the school’s All-American wall:

“Pretty cool privilege to have my photo up in the Stanford stadium, and even more fun my family got to go see it!” Murphy captioned the photo.

On Sunday, his family, dressed in Redskins gear, saw him record five tackles:

“On another note… sad day to admit I’m the runt of the litter. But hey, runts are always the toughest right?” Murphy wrote.

Michelle Gooday couldn’t hold back her enthusiasm. Waiting in line to collect food at the Washington Redskins’ 12th annual Harvest Feast presented by Ryan Homes, she and her friend began dancing to “The Temptations” playing over the speakers in the FedExField concourse.

Their joy encapsulated the spirit of an event dedicated to giving back and bringing smiles to 3,000 Prince George’s County families in need.

“I think it’s wonderful,” Gooday said, a member of her children’s school board. “Giving back to the community is a great thing because there are a lot of homeless. As Americans, we help a lot of people but there are a lot of people here that are starving that need help, so it’s a blessing to be able to give back.”

The Redskins Blog caught up with several other families and participants who waited patiently in line Tuesday afternoon to each take home Thanksgiving bags of food, including one of the thousands of turkeys given away.

“I think it’s beautiful. It’s out of this world,” said Sharon Hill, a proud Redskins fan. “I thank the Redskins for this. I was wondering how many other NFL teams do this. I’m blessed. It touches me for them to give every year because I do need that extra.”

Redskins owner Dan Snyder and Maryland’s Governor-elect Larry Hogan, along with Redskins staff and players including Colt McCoy, Alfred Morris, Everette Brown, Shawn Lauvao and Tress Way were joined by more than 500 volunteers bagging and handing out groceries were.

“So many people don’t have anything to eat,” said Pearson, a resident of Prince George’s County. “We never realize what’s going to happen to us next. You live for today but how about tomorrow? Today is a beautiful day, people are here, and it’s a nice atmosphere.”

Caroline Young, flanked by three of her nine grandchildren Tuesday, has come to the Harvest Feast every year since its inception.

“I think it’s great [the Redskins] are giving back to the community, not just a small community, but all of Prince George’s County,” said Young. “Some people might not be able to afford everything. They might just be able to afford the side dishes.”

The giving then extended outside the gates as volunteers assisted families with grocery carts to ease the burden of carrying their Thanksgiving to their cars.

“Whatever help people can get is appreciated,” said Gooday. “I’m hoping they’ll be able to continue to help.”

Chris Baker Wants To Leave Mark On Community

All written content in this post is the original work of Brian Skinnell, Redskins.com intern.

Washington Redskins defensive lineman Chris Baker on Tuesday kicked off his campaign to improve literacy rates in youth by visiting the Wheatley Education Campus in Washington, D.C.

“Swaggy” visited the Wheatley Education Campus in Northeast, D.C. to talk to 98 fourth and fifth grade students about being literate.

“My foundation, The Chris Baker Foundation, has met up with Wheatley School and we’re helping out with their literacy and financial literacy,” he said.

Upon his arrival, Baker gave a brief speech motivating children to learn to read and write and also endorsed the financial literacy theme of the event.

He provided encouraging words to the wide-eyed boys and girls regarding the importance of being literate.

Afterwards, he took questions from the children much like he usually would during an open locker room session at Redskins Park. However, this time Baker didn’t feel quite as much pressure.

“I think it’s a lot easier to answer their questions,” he said. “But they are a lot more direct than the media sometimes. They say what’s on their mind.”

The Chris Baker 92 Foundation teamed up with an education technology company to bring a computer program to campus that educates children on financial matters while also teaching them to read and write.

“We set that up to help the kids with their financial literacy and literacy,” Baker said. “They’re able to do different programs that the teachers can monitor through the computer.”

Baker believes the program will give them freedom to study at school or at home, and will be a tool that teachers can utilize to help their students reach higher scores.

“It’s something they can do here [or] at home,” Baker said. “They can take it home to have their parents help them out with their education programs. It’s something to help them reach their scores in reading and writing.”

For Baker, this was just the first step in a long literacy campaign that his foundation is a part of.

In December, the literacy program will be implemented in Windsor, Conn., and The Chris Baker 92 Foundation Reading Challenge will take place in January of next year.

Legendary Washington Redskins head coach Joe Gibbs is celebrating his 74th birthday today!

Gibbs roamed the sidelines for the Redskins for 16 seasons, accumulating 154 regular season wins, 17 playoff victories and, of course, three Super Bowl championships.

In 1982 — his second season in Washington — Gibbs’ Redskins would finish the regular season with an 8-1 record and the No. 1 seed in the NFC.

Cruising through the Detroit Lions, Minnesota Vikings and Dallas Cowboys on the NFC side of the playoff bracket, the Redskins would beat the Miami Dolphins 27-17 in Super Bowl XVII.

In 1987, the Redskins would finish the regular season with an 11-4 record including two victories over the Cowboys. Getting past the Chicago Bears and Vikings thanks in large part to the play of Hall of Fame cornerback Darrell Green, the Redskins would beat the Denver Broncos in historic fashion in Super Bowl XXII.

In 1991, Gibbs lead a team that dominated the competition en route to a 14-2 regular season record. The burgundy and gold carried their momentum into the playoffs, as they outscored the Atlanta Falcons, Lions and Buffalo Bills — in Super Bowl XXVI — by a combined score of 102-41.

Lifelong Washington Redskins fan Alan Grabowski needed an outlet for the increasing number of shoes in his closet.

So, the self-admitted sneakerhead from Connecticut took a pair of his Nike Air Max 95s and turned them into any Redskins fan’s dream footwear choice.

“My wife and I planned a trip to see the Redskins play the Giants at FedExField on September 25th, [and] I had plenty of Redskins jerseys, shirts and hats to wear down there, but realized I didn’t have any footwear,” Grabowski told The Redskins Blog. “So I decided to take an old pair of Air Max 95s and transform them into Redskins sneakers.”

grabowskiHaving customized other pairs of shoes in the past, Grabowski said the transformation from your standard pair of Air Max 95s to the burgundy and gold colorway took about six hours.

“I’m a sneakerhead and my obsession with buying sneakers got to be a bit too much,” he said. “So I took it upon myself to learn how to customize my old sneakers. I’ve been customizing now for a little over a year and I’m learning more and more with each pair.

“The process took about five to six hours of prepping, painting and finishing. When I first started, a pair would usually take me a couple of days. I’ve definitely learned how to speed up the process now.”

As for this particular pair of customized Redskins sneakers, Grabowski said he got a lot of compliments from fellow Redskins Nation members.

“While I was down there I had a bunch of people ask me about them, it was great,” he said. “I wear them every Sunday now.”

Grabowski is hoping that in the future he can take more of his old pairs of shoes, change them up, and add them to his ever-growing Redskins collection.

“I definitely plan on doing another pair of Redskins sneakers,” he said. “I will be making a pair for my son and probably my wife in the near future. I used the classic script logo on the other pair, but I’d like to use the helmet logo on my next pair.”

Washington Redskins defensive end Jarvis Jenkins on Sunday posted on Instagram a photo of his former teacher and he following the game against the San Francisco 49ers:

“[Tough] loss today but seeing my grade school teacher Ms Ferguson for the first time in almost 10 years all the way on the west coast made my day a lot better. I gave this woman many headaches but she was tough on me and stuck with me,” Jenkins captioned the photo.

From Central, SC., Jenkins wants to use his clout as a professional football player to give back to a community that nurtured him.

Today, he will be hosting his first-ever free Thanksgiving turkey drive in Seneca, SC., through his J3 Foundation:

The J3 Foundation exists to serve as a charitable initiative dedicated to encourage the giving of time, resources and information to support families in the Clemson, SC area. In addition, the driving force behind our organization is to ultimately enhance the lives of youth and to enable them to make a positive impact in our community through SAT Prep, tuition assistance and educational supplies.

Next summer, Jenkins is also hoping to run a three-day camp for youth football players in Central.

“You always want to go back to where you tied at. I don’t want to just be gone from Clemson forever,” Jenkins said. “I always want to go back every year, keep my face around and motivate other guys to get to the level I’m at now. I want guys in 2030 and 2020 getting drafted by the Redskins and me being a part of it.”
