Tyler Larsen is getting a second chance

The 6-foot-4, 315 pounder went undrafted from Utah State in 2014, after he was projected to be a late round selection.

Now, signed by the Redskins today, Larsen will get another look.

A native of Salt Lake City, Larsen played both offensive and defensive line for Jordan High School, earning first team all-state honors in a senior season that included six sacks and four touchdowns.

He played four years for the Utah State Aggies, starting in 52 straight games at center. His brother, Cody, followed a similar trajectory, signing with the Ravens in 2013 as an undrafted defensive lineman.

“I played with an urgency the last three years, but this year, I feel a lot more is at stake,” Larsen told the Herald Journal News last season. “Now that I’m married and everything, the NFL is a big dream for us and it makes me want to go harder so I can actually achieve that goal and dream of being in the NFL, and be able to provide for her.”

It is worth noting that the videogame “Call of Duty” helped begin the couple’s relationship.

A fellow Aggie football player, Bryce Walker, introduced the pair.

“She had foot surgery, so she couldn’t really drive anywhere and Bryce was taking care of her,” Larsen said. “I happened to show up at the house and she asked me if I had an Xbox. I said, ‘Yeah.’ She said, ‘Do you have Call of Duty?’ I said, ‘Yeah.’

“So, she started coming over all the time and we started playing Call of Duty. Basically, that’s what sealed the deal.”

Larsen was picked up as a free agent at the beginning of Training Camp in 2014 by the Miami Dolphins but was waived during the team’s final cuts.

“You always want to be drafted,” Larsen said with the Dolphins at the time. “That’s just a little bump in the road and I’m here right now. Coaches have said that everyone is a player on the team and that’s how I’m going to take my approach to this and I’m just going to give my all and I’m just happy to be here.”

These were Larsen’s strengths, according to his NFL.com Draft profile last year:

“Excellent size — sheer mass to wall off. Generally holds his ground. Can sit and anchor and replace his hands. Good awareness. Consistent gun snaps. Was a rock for the Aggies, starting 51 career games.”
