Innovator, NFL Films Founder Ed Sabol Passes Away

Posted by Andrew Walker on February 9, 2015 – 5:39 pm

Ed Sabol left a mark on the National Football League that simply cannot be measured.

Sabol, the founder of NFL Films, died Monday. He was 98.

From its founding in 1964 until he retired in 1995, Sabol and NFL Films revolutionized the way a game was presented to the world, winning 52 Emmy Awards over that 31-year span.

Enjoy blooper reels? Love hearing the microphones on players, coaches and referees? How about that catchy orchestra music? All were the brainchild — or, at the very least, staples — of Sabol and NFL Films.

It’s no question Redskins punter Tress Way enjoys spending time with the community. He said as much to Chris Paul on “Redskins Late Night.”

But for all of his public speaking engagements and interactions — talking to high school athletes and church youth groups — he also thoroughly enjoys hunkering down and getting lost in the world of Netflix.

“Anybody who has a Netflix account, you know what I’m talking about,” he joked.

Yes, Tress, we really do.

If you haven’t been on the Taraji P. Henson bandwagon, now is a good time to start.

The acclaimed actress, and notable Redskins fan, claimed the biggest award of her career Saturday night from the NAACP at the 46th Image Awards, winning “Entertainer of the Year.”

Henson’s big year began with a lead role in the film “No Good Deed,”  which also earned her an award for Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture.

But now, playing a mother on FOX’s new hit music industry drama “Empire,” she has catapulted her career on a show that has become a staple for many people on Wednesday nights.

“Empire” has even broken a ratings record that stood for more than 23 years as the only primetime scripted series to grow in total viewers over each of its first five telecasts since at least 1991.

“I just want to say thank you. I’m very passionate about what I do. I take it very seriously,” said Henson, who received the award from Oprah Winfrey. “God gives us all gifts and for me, I didn’t get into this to win awards, although I’m very honored and blessed every time I’m nominated or get a chance to win one… What it represents to me is that all of the beautiful people and faces and lives that I get to touch through the gift that God gave me. And I take that very seriously…This means so much to me.”

As we noted earlier in January, Henson has a lot of history living in Washington, D.C. area, growing up as a Redskins fans with her father, who briefly held a job in the organization at one point in his career.

Her dominance on the screen should continue after “Empire” finishes its first season. Henson will star in two more films this year, “Term Life” and “Seasons of Love.”

We all have that moment, driving around with the radio on, and that song comes on, a song that requires the volume to be raised and singing, however bad, to commence.

Usually, these are not particularly proud or public moments.

But today, quarterback Robert Griffin III felt obligated to share his grooving to Michael Jackson’s “Billy Jean,” in which it is nearly impossible to not start dancing or humming along.

The added bonus, however, is listening to Griffin sing a few verses on his way to a workout.

Not a bad way to start the morning.

Ryan Kerrigan provided Washington, D.C., with some good luck Friday evening, as he was in attendance for the Washington Capitals’ 3-2 shootout victory over the Anaheim Ducks.

Kerrigan took a few photos with both his human and bird fans while at the game, as the Capitals’ mascot, Slapshot, sought out the Redskin for a quick pic as seen above.

And while he wasn’t wearing a Capitals jersey like Slapshot, Kerrigan was representing the Redskins’ home city with a Washington Nationals hat.

Also in attendance that night was fellow linebacker Trent Murphy, who admitted it was his first time seeing the Capitals in action:

All are invited to attend quarterback Robert Griffin III’s “Salute To Fitness” on Saturday, March 17, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Ferrell Center in Waco, Texas.

“Kick off the new year with RG3 and the rest of us at the Family of 3 Foundation by learning about healthy eating habits and workouts tailored to your specific needs and goals,” Griffin III’s foundation writes on familyof3.org. “The event will be run by professional nutritionists, dietitians and personal trainers who will give insightful seminars. Some of the topics will be: healthy eating do’s and don’ts, diet fads, and nutrition myth busters. There will also be a dedicated Q&A session so that attendees will have the ability to ask questions they may still want answers to.”

And, as Griffin III mentioned on Instagram, all are welcomed, so if you’re looking to bring the family there will be two different workouts to help kids and adults alike.

Adults: You will have an extended session with the nutritionists in order to better grasp the concepts of healthy eating, and a Q&A session. There will be dedicated workouts for all adults including yoga, zumba and stretching. Our professional trainers and nutritionists will also be available to provide you with contact information in order to use their services in the future. Lunch will be provided around the half way point of the event.

Children: You will be given a healthy eating work shop, and then you will go through some tests (push ups, sit ups, court runs, etc) in order to be placed onto teams. Those established teams will have an hour of competitions ranging from tug of war, three legged races, sack races, relay runs, etc. Lunch will be provided around the half way point of the event.

If you want to get a tattoo sleeve like the one Washington Redskins offensive lineman Shawn Lauvao has, you’ll need to book a plane ticket to Hawaii soon.

Lauvao told Chris Paul on the set of “Redskins Late Night” that he got his tattoo sleeve, which covers up his entire left arm, while back home on the islands.

Paul then asked Lauvao who is the most inked up player on the team, and both agreed it’s none other than fellow linemate Trent Williams.
