With the Super Bowl tomorrow, NFL Network began counting down some of the big game’s top moments throughout history. We’re proud to say the Redskins made two appearances on this list (No. 8 and No. 4), and in the same game no less.
That would be Super Bowl XXII, which occurred on this day in history, when the Redskins trounced the Broncos in San Diego, Calif., 42-10.
The offensive outburst was enough for both quarterback Doug Williams and running back Timmy Smith to have breakout offensive performances, which mostly occurred in the second quarter.
After falling behind 10-0, quarterback Doug Williams went on a tear. He connected on four touchdown passes, including an 80-yard bomb to Ricky Sanders, in the second quarter.
Timmy Smith managed a score in between the air assault breaking free down the right sideline for a 58-yard touchdown run.
“We scored 35 points in 18 plays–that’s execution at its very best,” Williams said. “Offensively, we were in a zone. It didn’t matter who we were playing, they weren’t going to stop us.”
Overall, Williams completed 18-of-29 passes for 340 yards and those four second-quarter touchdowns to notch him a Super Bowl MVP. Smith closed out the scoring with a four yard run in the fourth quarter, part of his incredible 204-yard rushing performance.
We’re glad to see them being recognized.
