If you’ve kept up with any Redskins celebrity gossip, then you’re probably aware that Maryland native Benji Madden married actress Cameron Diaz earlier this month.

Well, last night they went to the Lakers-Wizards game, presumably so Madden could support his hometown team courtside.

As these things tend to happen, the newlywed couple was featured on the jumbotron in the middle of the game during a “Kiss Cam” segment. Read more »

Offensive guard and five-time All-Pro Jerry Kramer, best known for his time perfecting the “Packer Sweep” with legendary head coach Vince Lombardi in Green Bay, joined Redskins Radio today.

He spoke reverently about Lombardi, who coached the Redskins in the final year of his career, discussing how many people were quick to judge him without ever knowing the real man.

“I’ve been trying to explain to people…what he was like and about his commitment and his consistency and his principles,” Kramer said. “Fairly, squarely, decently, by the rules, and judge a human being by his performance on the field and his contribution to the team. That’s how we judge guys. I think Coach Lombardi was a sensational human being.”

After roaming around the Super Bowl grounds, Redskins wide receiver Andre Roberts stopped by Redskins Radio this afternoon.

Roberts discussed his first year playing in a new organization and believes his second year with the Redskins will make him more comfortable.

“Being in Washington for the first year, it’s all new,” Roberts said. “New coaching staff, new players, new media, a new locker room, new weight room, everything. So it’s a little bit of a transition. You think it’s easier than it is but it’s just like coming into the NFL.

“Coming back this year, we should be a lot better with everything, and it should help us moving onto the next year.”

Roberts was also questioned about his preference regarding the inflation of footballs. Instead of picking a Super Bowl winner, he joked that he hopes both teams lose.

Pro Football Hall of Fame tackle Anthony Muñoz joined Redskins Radio on Wednesday where he brushed across several football topics including the famed Hogs.

While Muñoz in his own right was a great player, he didn’t have the same connection in the trenches that The Hogs had.

“They get after you,” Muñoz said when recalling the offensive line that helped the Redskins win three Super Bowl titles. “I tell you what, running that counter trey from a million different formations, they get after you. I mean [Russ] Grimm, Mark May and Joe Jacoby. It’s just big and just dominate.”

Muñoz also talked about playing in the “Freezer Bowl” and his thoughts on this Sunday’s Super Bowl matchup.

Chris Samuels is remaining in the Washington, D.C. area and near the game that he made a name for himself in.

On Wednesday afternoon, ESPN’s John Keim followed up on a tweet that announced the fact Samuels, a longtime Redskin, is going to be Osbourn High School’s (Manassas, Va.) new head football coach.

Last summer, NFL.com’s Chase Goodbread named Samuels the best pick of the 2000 NFL Draft.

Samuels appeared and started in 141 games over the course of 10 seasons. He paved the way for seven different 1,000-yard rushing seasons to include Clinton Portis’ 1,516-yard season which, at the time, was the franchise record for most rushing yards by an individual in a single-season in franchise history.

By the time he announced his retirement in March 2010, Samuels had appeared in six Pro Bowls, most by a Redskins offensive lineman in franchise history.

Like every team, the Redskins have a special team booth on Super Bowl Radio Row where fans can snap pictures as they pretend to put on the pads.

Unlike every team, the Redskins can boast three Super Bowl victories, which means fans have the opportunity to show off their pride and history in the perfect context.

Take this guy, wearing what looks to be an authentically stitched Doug Williams jersey, who, of course, was Super Bowl XXII MVP.

Who knows? The real Doug Williams is pretty good about posing for selfies. He should keep his eyes peeled, just in case.

Mike Clark’s Strength And Conditioning Philosophy

When Mike Clark first went to work in the weight room, he was a graduate-assistant football coach at the University of Kansas.

The team had just hired a strength coach but Clark was stuck in the film room, splicing tape and putting reels of players together.

“And then coach said, ‘Mike, how would you like to go down to the weight room? Help our guy down there,'” Clark recalled in an interview with Bears.com. “I was studying exercise physiology at the time and I’d started doing some weight lifting as a kid. So it just seemed like a natural fit.”

Clark, the Redskins newly announced strength and conditioning coach, did some competitive lifting in college, studying at Ottawa University in Ottawa, Kan. As a power lifter, he found that the most explosive athletes were Olympic lifters, so he incorporated their techniques into his own style and coaching philosophy.

“I like doing things with an Olympic base, so we are doing a lot more Olympic lifts,” Clark said to the Chicago Tribune while he was with the Bears.

Before working in the NFL with Seattle, Kansas City and Chicago, Clark spent 22 years as a strength coach at the collegiate level, including 14 years at Texas A&M. He played football for Oak Park High School in Kansas City, Mo., and continued as a center in Ottawa.

Clark’s first job was head strength coach at the University of Wyoming in 1981 and he’s stayed in the same profession ever since. There weren’t many positions for strength coaches in that time but his job has now become its own industry in the sports world.

“There’s been a lot of advancements, and a lot of things we thought were advancements that actually set us back, to be honest,” Clark said with the Bears. “The things that have made it easier are the computer, the ability to track numbers and do things, but just the acceptance of it is what I’ve seen. Nowadays, it’s all about performance, speed, power, change of direction.”

Coming into the organization early in the year, Clark will get a chance to implement his style through all phases of the offseason.

Here’s an interview during his time with the Chiefs, in which he discusses his strategies and workouts for the spring season.

Clark knows that in this new NFL, with Thursday games and highlyregimented workout times, each day will bring new challenges and his job will always be evolving.

“The offseason is so short,” Clark said. “Our offseason is nine weeks, but the truth of the matter is, for lifting and general conditioning, it’s five weeks. So we have five weeks to prepare them for a season that’s over 20 weeks long, that’s one of the real challenges today in the NFL.”
