Over the coming weeks, The Redskins Blog will be providing you with a different look at the franchise’s past.
Unlike Throwback Thursday where we’ve looked at important moments on the gridiron against an upcoming opponent, this series will examine some of the lighter moments as we go through all of the photos stored at Redskins Park in Loudoun County, Va.
Today is Super Bowl Media Day, which means thousands of media members will descend and crowd around podiums and stages, asking some insightful and then ridiculous questions to players competing in the big game this Sunday.
It brought to mind this photo –snapped on Aug. 30, 1983– of running back John Riggins, looking laid back on a sofa, fielding questions in a similar way.
Technology, as well as fashion, has changed considerably since 30 years ago, but in many ways the media’s attention to athletes and celebrities remains strong, if not addictive.
This photo, especially back then, pulls back the curtain on a television interview, examining the scene as Riggins addresses multiple male reporters, coincidentally all in white shirts.
The step and repeat banner is replaced here by some wood paneling and a large, 1980s-styled lamp. What’s also worth noting are the retro video cameras and microphones, and all those pesky wires crawling on the floor.
I’m sure the amount of microphone-wire related falls has significantly dropped since then.
Which is to say, we’ve come a long way from that era. But you can imagine the silly questions that were asked to Riggins will be asked today, too.
