As we documented here yesterday, Scot McCloughan was pretty athletic as a kid, eventually growing into a starting collegiate and minor league baseball player.

On tonight’s episode of “Redskins Nation,” hosted by Larry Michael, McCloughan recounts some of his memories playing ball and growing up with father, Kent, who played cornerback for Oakland starting in 1965.

“[My dad] was drafted by the Redskins and traded to the Raiders,” he said. “I was born in Alameda, Calif., in 1971 – last year dad played for the Raiders. So I grew up in the state of Colorado, small town of Loveland … I was raised there, ended up playing a little pro baseball at Wichita State, played in a couple College World Series. Then I spent three years with the Toronto Blue Jays – all minor league. I wasn’t very good, but I enjoyed it. Outfielder – I could run; no power. I could hit for average, just no power.”

McCloughan said he ended up hurting his shoulder in his third year of minor league baseball. That’s when he got the fateful call to go work with the Packers organization.

“Ron Wolf was the general manager of the time at the Green Bay Packers, and he worked for a long time with my dad at the Raiders, so he called and offered me a full-time job,” said McCloughan. “So I talked to my dad and he said, ‘They’re very hard to come by as an area scout.’ So I called Toronto and told them I was retiring, and they were like, ‘OK! Thanks for coming.’ My father retired three years ago after 46 years with the Raiders. He played seven and scouted for 39, and him and Mr. [Al] Davis were really, really close.”

He and his father are very close, too, and his passion for scouting was bred from a very early age.

“[Tape] was on the projectors. Down in our basement,” McCloughan said of his childhood. “There would be times when I was in elementary school where [dad] would be doing University of Colorado or Colorado State, so I would leave school for the day and go scout with him. So I’ve been around it.”

Scot McCloughan’s already had quite the first day as the Redskins general manager.

At 12 p.m., McCloughan, along with President Bruce Allen, met with the media at Redskins Park in Loudoun County, Va., as he fielded questions for nearly 45 minutes before taking his first photo op with a shiny Redskins helmet.

Just minutes after that, McCloughan sat down with Larry Michael, Voice of the Redskins, for an exclusive interview.

After his one-on-one inside the studio, McCloughan did a string of radio and television interviews before making his way over to where the media sit at Redskins Park.

He didn’t come empty-handed, though, as he brought pizza and cookies.

Check back with The Redskins Blog later for more from his first day at Redskins Park.

Washington Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins can add recording artist to his already long string of accomplishments.

Midnight Pilot — a self proclaimed folk-rock Americana group out of Nashville, Tenn. — tweeted out the above photo of Cousins at the microphone in a recording study Thursday evening.

While we aren’t sure how the final product will turn out, we do know he can get quite loud:

Former Redskins general manager Bobby Beathard thinks newly hired general manager Scot McCloughan is “fantastic.”

“I think he’ll do a great job for the Redskins,” Beathard said Thursday on ESPN 980. “I don’t have any doubts about it.”

“[Team president] Bruce [Allen] recognizes the talent this guy has,” he said. “Bruce knows him. So I think it’s the perfect hire. Every aspect of it, from his ability as a talent scout to his getting along with people. He knew coming in what it would be like working with Bruce, and he figured it would be a great situation.”

Considered one of the best general managers in the history of the NFL, Beathard led the Redskins’ front office from 1978-88, making three trips to the Super Bowl and winning twice. He later served as general manager for the Chargers from 1990-2000.

He knew both McCloughan and his father Kent– a longtime scout with the Raiders–over the years and believes McCloughan will institute the correct structure of communication within the organization.

“It’s the only model to follow,” Beathard said of McCloughan choosing personnel and head coach Jay Gruden coaching them. “There’s too much going on to be head coach nowadays, that the head coach can [also] be a talent evaluator. …The coaches are going to have a say. But when you have a strong leader like Scot, he sets the way it’s going to go. He’s been successful. He’s worked with successful people. So I think they’ll all come into his way of doing it and be happy.”

Beathard mentioned how as general manager he would actively discuss personnel with scouts and specialty coaches to determine what they looked for in players. He’s confident McCloughan will do the same thing and work cohesively with everyone.

“When we had Joe Gibbs …shoot, Joe always had a say in what we wanted to do [in the draft and free agency],” he said. “The coaches always had a say. But I had the final say.”

Beathard expressed his optimism with the team and believed the Redskins have a lot of “good pieces” in place. The next step he admitted will fall mostly on building through the draft, something he knows McCloughan can establish early.

“I think [he’ll] rely mostly on the draft and [will] fill in some places if there’s a free agent out there that you feel, at the right price, can really help the franchise in both leadership or play at that position,” Beathard said. “This young guy is really good. He has a real feel for that. He’ll do it the right way. I’m a real fan of his.”
