Packard Fancher lives in San Diego, two blocks from the Pacific Ocean, but when he goes out into public, specifically the skating rink, he makes sure people know he’s from Virginia.
A recruiter at a staff agency, “Packy,” as he calls himself, has balanced his work life with an in-depth skateboarding hobby. And just like every skater has a brand or company to promote, Packy has made the Washington Redskins his defining look and expression of fandom.
Packy doesn’t want to call himself a professional skateboarder but he and his burgundy DeAngelo Hall jersey have made their rounds into professional contests such as the Dew Tour, competing in Berlin, Germany, Malmo, Sweden and throughout the United States. His personal skateboard even has his name written in burgundy and gold graphics beneath the board.
He became a Redskins fan organically, born and raised in Virginia before graduating as a history major from Virginia Tech. He got into football there and followed the players’ paths to the NFL. Naturally, DeAngelo Hall, a product of VT, became his favorite player.
“He’s the perfect guy for a skateboarding fan,” Packy wrote to The Redskins Blog. “I went to high school close to Chesapeake, went to Virginia Tech and so when D-Hall landed in Washington I was very excited. I like players with passion and get under the skin of their opponents. Recently he reposted a photo of me in his jersey for ‘DHall Tuesday’ and I was extremely honored.”
When he isn’t skateboarding, Packy walks down the street to a conveniently located Redskins bar called Winston’s, in Ocean Beach, Calif., where he watches games. “I always stand by the team,” he writes.
